Any R&B lover will tell you the 902s birthed some of the best records and artist to date. From 112 to Boyz II Men , to Xscape and En Vogue - we're barely scratching the surface of R&B talent the 21st century has to offer. Up and coming crooner Dre Harmony taps back into that old school creativity to bring us his newest project, The Commencement EP . Intertwining 6 solid tracks on Love, Lust and all things in between, Harmony gives listeners just [...]
By now you've no doubt heard Brad Paisley and LL Cool J's thoroughly bewildering "Accidental Racist," and wondered how in God's name we live in a world where this song exists. We guess the sentiment is laudable enough, in its own cack-handed way — ultimately, it's a plea for mutual understanding and racial reconciliation, which is something we can get behind, even if it is couched in curiously passive-agressive language and non-apologies — but boy is it ever both a) weird and b) plain old bad . In the spirit of [...]

News is in the ever-so-tumultuous En Vogue have broken up again. This time, its two against two. The foursome have had so many combinations for their band that we had to go and do some research about the group that we once loved but hadn't heard from since 20042s Soul Flower . In our rummage we found this handy chart on wikipedia. Check it out. Related articles Twitter Beef: En Vogue vs. En Vogue (wendyjonescelebritynews.wordp ress.com) En Vogue Ladies Slap Each [...]

Maybe it says more about how terrible R&B has gotten than about how great it used to be, but lately, I've actually found myself sort of nostalgic for '00s soul. Not so much the R&B stars of the aughts who are still putting out the hits (or trying to), but the ones who aren't, the supernovas who flickered brightly but relatively briefly: Ashanti, Christina Milian (whom I just saw a couple of nights ago doing God knows what on The Voice ) and Destiny's Child. Though solo Beyonce has her moments, there was nothing quite like [...]

Boy bands are great. And yes we do love swooning over them — old and new. But music isn’t an all boys club. So, in honor of the badass ladies kicking a cappella up a notch in the upcoming motion picture Pitch Perfect (it hits theaters Oct. 5), we decided to give it up to the ladies with a list of the best girl groups to ever grace the stage. 1. SPICE GIRLS With their quirky clothing, perky attitudes and infectious pop songs, we couldn’t start this list without highlight the [...]

En Vogue - Free Your Mind

Today represents the first time I have written for the music/pop culture site Idolator . The piece is called En Vogue’s Album ‘Funky Divas’ Turns 20: Backtracking and celebrates their excellent 1992 smash. Check it out now . This was really fun to write! If you know the album, I hope you play it this week. If you don't, you have work to do. and my fave song from [...]

Backtracking is our recurring look back at the pop music that shaped our lives. Friends may come and go, but we'll be spinning our favorite albums forever. Consider the landscape of today’s R&B and hip hop, populated by girl singers grinding their way across tracks written, produced and test marketed for them by multiple teams of biz hit makers. Pushed by a promotional cycle that puts them in tabloid scandals 24/7. Then consider En Vogue: four Oakland, California women — Dawn Robinson. Maxine Jones, Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron — who [...]

The Sisters With Voices (aka SWV) are back to bring their great sound to the new decade. Yes, the have been gone for a while, but the voices behind "So Weak" and "Right Here" are ready to take on a different market. The buzz single is called "Co-Sign." Most bands of the same ilk, like En Vogue and TLC, failed to deliver, but let's hope they will crack the market this time. The album's called I Miss Us and its slated for an April 10th release! Heard of Stooshe ? They're a rising UK pop trio, and the only girl group listed on BBC's Sound of 2012 longlist . And as you can see above, they'd like to be taken seriously, thank you very much. With effortlessly melodic, soulful voices a la En Vogue or The Sugababes and a perky power punch of personality (think a slightly more X-minded version of the Spice Girls or The Dolly Rockers ), the girls have making strong waves in the UK already. After the release of their [...]

After long stint in pop production, our favorite producer Switch a.k.a. Dave Taylor a.k.a. Solid Groove is back with more dance stuff in the form of I Still Love You , a collaboration with En Vogue's Andrea Martin. It definitely got that Switch sound but a lot more toned down and way less in your face compared to Switch's releases from pre Major Lazer era. Nonetheless, great grooving beats and soulful vocal from Andrea Martin turn this low key tune into gold. Don't miss this release. DOWNLOAD: Switch - I [...]
Filed under: News Music industry fests like CMJ regularly mix a few reunions into their bacchanal of baby bands, but usually it's alt-rock icons like Dinosaur Jr., which was why the surprisingly unheralded return of '90s R&B legends En Vogue was such a shocker. Could this be the real En Vogue? The four Oakland ladies who ran the pop charts with a series of sassy smashes and then simply disappeared? Why yes, it could. And damn, can they still [...]
