When we were out in Italy on our holidays Mrs. Toad and I had very few CDs with us but one of them was an Uncut compilation of prison blues and murder ballads which, amazingly, given the very promising subject matter, really wasn't very good. In fact, it was rotten, so I've made a podcast based on the self same concept, but with what I personally think are vastly better songs. Most obviously, to my mind, there were very few contemporary songs in there, and I thought that was a little weird. Now, I actually think that the [...]

Nah don't be daft, of course it doesn't. Friday loves you. It loves your Mum too. Does your Mum have great tits? I reckon she probably does. Today technology is King. I remember my first few days being properly employed and how far away the things we take for granted really are. I was working on concepts for this kind of stuff years ago, and it may not have ever come into production, but it's amazingly exciting to see the future actually happen, right before your eyes. Yesterday I saw my silly old folks on Skype. [...]

Bugger me it's a busy week in gigs this week, starting this very evening, which is annoying in a sense as I'd rather hoped to have a relaxing week. Fat chance, it seems. Sorry for the lack of chat, but there's a fuck of a lot to list here and I have to get this done before the end of my lunch break. Consequently these previews are going to be the shortest I've ever written. It might seem slightly insulting to the bands involved, but huge apologies if it is, but I am really, really rushed this morning. [...]

Hello everyone - sorry for the lateness of this post, but unfortunately sometimes actual jobs with wages and things have to take precedence over things Toad, just for a little while. I have spent the day at a meeting in Inverness, and I am desperate for a really good sleep. There's not a lot on in Edinburgh this week as far as I can tell. The brilliant Animal Magic Tricks is playing pretty much as I write this, and I am gutted that I won't get the chance to see her. Well, not until Saturday, anyway, which is [...]

After a week spent debating it, how about a podcast embodying the discussions we've been having about production values I thought a podcast which sort of pulls all the disagreements and moans and whingeing and so on into one big mp3 of joy would be a good idea. So we've got some Big Production, some demo scratchy stuff and a few bands who have dabbled with both. I fart on about production values as if I have the faintest idea what I'm talking about, which of course I don't. I'm not sure how well it works [...]

Alright, the Alela Diane thread has been one of the most interesting on this site for a while, so it's time to destroy all that mature and considered debate and return to the sort of trivial internet white noise which, if we're being honest with ourselves, is really what we do best, here at Song, by Toad. This weekend holds a trip to Manchester and a discussion with a pal of mine about possibly putting some design thinking into this site. I am not happy with it, but I decided to stop buggering about and just accept it [...]

A little early in a career for a Best Of, one might argue, but given that Enfant Bastard 's output is sprawled aver CD-Rs distributed haphazardly across the music collections of a few hundred Scottish music fans I admit that it does make sense to pull it all together at some point and try to, at the very least, take stock a little. And for those of you who don't know the man, it works nicely as an introduction. To say that Cammy is likely to prove to be a little polarising is an understatement. Basically, I [...]

This is just an overspilling of all the shiny new things I have in my inbox this week. It's so fabulously up to the minute that there are songs in here which only landed in my inbox yesterday. There's a slightly sneaky legend making an appearance as well, in the shape of Jason Lytle. Jason was the lead singer of Grandaddy, a legendary group who disbanded back in about, erm, 2006 or so, leading to Jason moving to a house out in Montana and apparently giving up on the idea of making a living out of music altogether. [...]

Sorry for the silence over the last couple of days. Yesterday we recorded the Samamidon Toad Session, which took a while and generally distracted me from the business of writing the blog, so I'm afraid this weekly update is a day late. Which you are just going to have to fucking live with. I'd almost say that there really wasn't much on in Edinburgh this week, but what I would really mean is that there is not much high-profile stuff going on in Edinburgh this week. There are, actually, some very good gigs to be [...]
