1983 was a pivitol year for me and music. As the year began, I had begun to explore more of the radio stations available to me in our corner of the Midwest, gaining familiarity and interest in songs and artists that I might not have heard on Top 40 radio. I was also hearing music from the '60s and '70s, some of which existed as vague recollections, but much of it for the first time. There would never be a time in which more music would be a wholly new experience for [...]

Engelbert Humperdinck: Lesbian Seagull [purchase] It wasn't easy thinking of a song to post this week as I did a mix of birds songs on my blog last (fifteen songs, all naming a different type of bird) and not only did I not want to re-post any of those songs, but I didn't even want to re-use any of those fifteen birds. I'm not a bird guy, couldn't think of anything. Then boyhowdy's post the other day made me realise [...]

New Black Light Machine From: London, United Kingdom Here come London's New Black Light Machine to save the world from the Take That reunion and bury landfill indie for ever. Throwing angular nu wave shapes and jittery fidgety post punk moves the unbelievably cool looking quintet are heaven sent to rejuvenate a music scene that's been looking a little frayed around the edges. The tracks on their myspace site sound like an application form for [...]
:: Paul McCartney is doing a Ustream chat , and he'll be answering questions from fans. Be sure to ask him about Say Say Say . And Wings . And Ram . You know, all the good stuff. :: Looks like the reason John Bush didn't stick it out with Anthrax was at least partially because he didn't want to re-record Worship Music . He also didn't feel the need to make a boat load of money rejoining the band. :: You know [...]
By The Time I Get To Phoenix is not even my favourite Jimmy Webb song, much as I love it, but I cannot think of many other songs in pop music that traverse interpretations and genres as effortlessly as this. Here I am offering a bunch of versions that cover pop, country, soul, jazz and easy listening. By The Time I Get To Phoenix sounds like it belongs in any of these genres. And even when interpreted by artists from the same genre, it is an immensely flexible a song. Just compare the versions by the Four Tops, [...]

What is there to say about Mike Judge's magnum opus, Beavis and Butt-head ? Everything has been thrown at these two obnoxious yet addictive animated metal heads. Spawned from MTV's prime-time cartoon sludge fest Liquid Television (of Aeon Flux and Milton fame), characters Beavis and Butt-head were pegged as controversial by many, though lauded as idiot savants by a whole generation... and more! Even Patrick Stewart liked them, and in the mid-90s the two Highland,TX morons amassed a large following and in turn a 1996 feature film, Beavis and Butt-head Do America [...]

Is it just me or is this years Glastonbury line up one of the most dispiriting line ups at a festival ever? Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Tony Christie, Status Quo, Tom Jones, Crosby Still and Nash, Bjorn Again and Spinal Tap (that joke isn't funny anymore) sound more like residents at a retirement home for ageing rockers. Even bands that the Devil loves such as Madness and the Specials are little more than interesting archaeological exhibits. This is not even Dad rock this is Grandad rock, pension rock, fossil rock. Next year you'll probably need a degree [...]

This week is National Bike Week in Ireland (June 14-21). According to its website, it is a week devoted to "a series of nationwide events organised by cycling groups, communities and local authorities supported by the Department of Transport." These events have included inititiaves aimed at getting Irish workers to cycle to work instead of taking their cars, free bike check ups, and sponsored cycles and races. In tandem with National Bike Week, the Department of Transport hope to implement the first National Cycle Policy Framework in this country. One of its main goals is to [...]

Unchained Melody is one of the most iconic songs of all time. The writer of this song, Lyricist Hy Zaret, passed away yesterday at the ripe old age of 99. In his memory, I found some of the more well known renditions (and there are a lot to choose from): Elvis Presley, Righteous Brothers , U2, The Scene from the movie Ghost , Tom Jones, and Engelbert Humperdinck. There are two other songs which I had always attributed to others were in fact [...]
