Not that this hasn't been everywhere by now, but just in case. One Jeff Mangum has performed the first Neutral Milk Hotel song he's played in public in 7 years-the absolutely beautiful b-side Engine (here in Columbus, OH, also played in Pittsburgh)-while onstage with the Elephant 6 tour. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean NMH will be touring the known universe, or releasing a new record or anything anytime soon, but Mr Mangum's increasing appearances in public lately do have some appetites whetted and hopes raised.

A MySpace friend made an excited post yesterday, with the curious headline "I saw Neutral Milk Hotel last night!" Considering the fact that NMH is a cult indie band that's been in suspended animation for years -- and that leader Jeff Mangum is notoriously reclusive -- I clicked on her bulletin with curiosity. Turns out, she went to the Pittsburgh stop of the Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise show, and Mangum (who had popped up here and there on the trek doing some singing) performed NMH's "Engine" with Julian Koster playing singing saw accompaniment. I want to talk about my email for a sec [kb (at) thedecibeltolls.com]. Chuck Klosterman once said that music critique is basically being paid to read your mail. That's pretty accurate, and in many ways, that was the largest chunk of my job as a talent buyer at the music venue. I miss doing such work, despite the funky hours, so I enjoy getting mail from publicists and label reps. These letters provide two outcomes, depending on if the publicist is good at his/her job: 1) point you in the direction of artists that will pique your interest, or [...]

It's been a while since I've posted but I have a good excuse. I've been sick and I've felt absolutely horrible since last week, so rather than posting stuff I've been lining up shots of Nyquil and sleeping 19 hours a day. And you think I'm kidding? Anyway, as it happens I've actually started to feel better so I've crawled myself away from bed to my trusty PC to post ten songs you need for the weekend and beyond. It's all over the place as always but that's the fun of being open minded. Have fun [...]
Way back in 2005, Engineers released a self-titled debut of lush, swirling, atmospheric rock goodness, which I just got around to picking up the other day. It doesn't seem like they've released anything since, but that doesn't mean you should...

Overall, I think I am taking the news that Brett Favre is retiring a lot better than I took our NFC championship loss to the Giants. I am excited to see what an entire season of an Aaron Rodgers -led Packers team would look like and although I am excited, it is a good thing for Mike McCarthy that he got his contract extension this year rather than next because it might not be so pretty next year. Supertramp -- Goodbye Stranger From the [...]
I'm in my hotel in San Diego waiting to go to this SDSU football game. In the meantime blog post madnessssss the maeslant barrier (maeslantkering), a huge storm surge barrier at the mouth of the port of rotterdam in the netherlands, is the largest hydraulic engineering structure on earth and, according to hard-fact bible wikipedia, 'the largest moving structure on earth'. it was opened in 1997 as the final part of the delta works , an enormous project undertaken in order to protect certain coastal areas of the country from the [...]

production still from Miracle in the Rain W e are looking at yet another day of rain in what is going down as the wettest summer in the history of the state of Oklahoma. This summer has felled trees, floated cars, and flooded my house - threatening my record collection (that's some serious shit). Rain and it's associated weather friends are a persistent theme in many artists lyrical database. As such, I thought I'd put together an obvious playlist of [...]

Well, I cannot lie. I am in a band and the reason that I have not updated in the past couple of weeks is because I was actually on the road for our first tour and recording a full length album. The trip was incredible and I got to see a good portion of the east coast. Right now I'm in the process of settling back into the groove at home which includes updating this thing. I have lots of exciting bands to share in the coming weeks so be ready. Isaac ps. Here's a song [...]

They will also play as a support act to Deacon Blue and The Saw Doctors this coming saturday. More infos on their homepage, and you can still listen to the whole album on the bands bebo-profile [...]

The idea of searching audio isn't entirely new, of course - we've seen it in a few other search engines like BlinkX and PodZinger - but Pluggd's unique search style, which creates a heatmap of your search term on the audio's timeline, provides a [...]
