England in 1819 will be performing at Emilio's on Sunday, April 28 with local favorites Crushed Purple . The band is on a four week national tour to promote their new single and music video "Our Own God." England in 1819 is an indie chamber rock band from Baton Rouge, comprised of two brothers and their father. Defined by haunting melodies and evocative surges of sound, they create a unique combination of Southern edge and English introspection.
We're reviewing some of our favorite (and mostly undiscovered) releases of 2012: A pair of classically-trained brothers -- Andrew and Dan Callaway-- and their musician father Liam form the familial nucleus of England in 1819, a Baton Rouge band that weaves distinctive chamber pop with muted post-rock drama. From swirling, densely layered melodies built on a grand symphonic scale to exquisitely-detailed piano and voice quietude, this is modern progressive music that wisely steers clear of pompous excess. Producer Mark Bingham and the Callaways keep the arrangements loosely restrained and, [...]

Sorry it's been so long since my last update (a whole two weeks). Between packing up and moving out of my house and frantically looking for a new place to live, getting stuff into storage, boarding the cats, living like a nomad for a week and finally moving everything into a new apartment, my life has been pretty chaotic and unfortunately you music-wanting readers were left to suffer. Hopefully I can make it up to you with a few shows you might want to check out tonight. First up is chamber rock band [...]

England in 1819 England In 1819 released the official video for "Waterfall" this past Spring, but I'm just now giving it a listen/watch. It has a bit of a chamber indie-pop sound; but it also reminds me of some of the better crescendos Ride created. Watching the video in this post. The Baton Rouge-based band features three family members - two brothers (Dan and Andrew Callaway) and their father (Liam Callaway). The unlikely combination of musicians - at least in terms of typical band member make-up - released their album, [...]

From the Mailbag New and Right Now So, here's the deal. I can't begin to listen to, digest or publish everything we receive. About once or twice a month in 2012*, I will be randomly opening new mail and so long as the stuff is potentially of interest to our music-crazed audiences, we'll run it right here. Today we reached in and dove deep and what we found was so unbelievably awesome [...]
Alma is a powerful album rooted in one family's fascinating journey. Its scope is cinematic and it proves to be unique and strong enough to stand on its own. Liam Callaway and his sons Andrew and Dan are the heart of England in 1819 and their family story inhabits much of Alma's grandiose sounds. From their collective stints with classical music, instructing military bands, and playing in rock bands, the end result of post-rock-tinged cinematic anthems makes a surprising amount of sense. Alma works best when it's unassuming and shows some restraint as it has an infrequent tendency [...]
The grandly epic "Waterfall" comes to us via the impressive Alma from Baton Rouge 's England In 1819 , a band we've described as "weaving distinctive chamber pop with muted post-rock drama." We also ventured that Alma was one of the most promising albums we've heard this year -- and tracks like "Waterfall" prove exactly why. And yes, that's Andrew and Dan Callaway's dad Liam (with hat above) on guitar. How cool is that? Stick around for the whole song -- it's worth it. More DC here ... [...]

There are plenty of good indie bands consisting of siblings, but England In 1819 also includes a parent. The group consists fo brothers Andrew and Dan Callaway and their father Liam, but the band's musical lineage belongs to Liam's father William Callaway, who was a traveling musician throughout Georgia in the 1940s and 50s. its not very often you run across a father and 2 son trio, but louisian's england in 1819 are just exactly that. a dad and two sons creating music side by side, sounds pretty awesome to me. the trio have lived all around the world including athens, ga, the english countryside and of course louisiana, and the influences of all the regions are definitely apparent if not immediately. i have been listening to their record alma for the past couple of weeks and i really, really dig it. its part orchestral pop, part standard indie rock - whatever [...]

Three-piece band England In 1819 redefines what it means to spend quality time with your family. Andrew and Dan Callway, along with their father Liam, formed the group in honor of his father William, who was a traveling musician in the '60s and '70s. The two brothers are classically trained, and it clearly shows in [...]

Tweet I can't really remember the last time I sat through a whole music video (how odd, how positively ADD). Ah well, that's what you get when you're spinning a dozen plates above your head, one of which contains a tepid dinner. I can't tell you exactly what drove me to this feat of concentration, or even why this song from Baton Rouge act England In 1819 held me transfixed, but it has. Not an awful lot happens but it doesn't need [...]
