With tour mates the likes of Sonic Youth and a release on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! Records, The Entrance Band has a wall of hype to surmount with the September 1st release of its self-titled debut effort. With a press release that promises "an incendiary, 10-song journey into the creative group-mind of three talented and inspired musicians," the bar is high for the Los Angeles-based band. But their savage style of heavy guitar and playing style reminiscent of first degree assault may be a draw for many music fans in search of a new darling of [...]

All Photos by Clint Miller For the month of July Davy is off on the This Piano Plays Itself tour so Ohmpark has decided to enlist myself to keep you updated on what's happening in the ATL. I was asked to review the Sonic Youth show Monday night at the Variety Playhouse. I was a bit skeptical that I could accomplish this at first due to the fact that I realized their is no way I could cover them properly since I belong to a younger generation of [...]

I have stated before, without a hint of irony, that Sonic Youth is the best band in the world. That is significantly different than saying that they're my favourite band in the world. Although they would likely settle nicely somewhere in my top 30, it's by means of their longevity, mixed with their continually consistent relevance, that I feel I could accurately make such a statement. They've gone from being an independent band, bucking at the system by doing exactly what they wanted to do, to being the only band signed to a major label that continued bucking [...]

the entrance band opens at 8pm

More detailed review to come, perhaps. Short version - they played the whole of "The Eternal" apparently, and a few older ones, although none that I recognized. Also they played a Neil Young cover, but I didn't recognize it either. That said, I really enjoyed the show. Here's the setlist (courtesy of someone at Stille Post). Frank Yang It's a long way from CBGBs in New York to Massey Hall in Toronto - geographically, stylistically, even temporally. The former defined by its role as the primordial ooze from whence punk rock first emerged, the latter known largely for the legendary folk and jazz artists who graced its stage. CBGBs was a place to begin, Massey a place to arrive, but the path between the two is one that's been trod by few acts. As of this past Tuesday night, Sonic Youth became one of them. At first, [...]

Headlining that night was The Entrance Band. Not missing a beat, their set seemed to explode from the moment the members took the stage, with a fierce combination of psychedelic, blues, and rock—it almost feels like a martian attack on your soul, especially as Guy Blakeslee's vocals reach their coda, like watching the sky opens up for the birth and death of an actual star.

It's Friday morning and I shouldn't actually be awake considering that just a few hours ago the NPR music team was sitting in the courtyard of the Presbyterian Church--also a SXSW venue--recording a podcast that sounded like one long hiccup. But with the magic of editing (thanks, Stephen!) that hiccup will be transformed into a mellifluous yowl of enthusiasm. Yesterday was a bit of a marathon. NPR presented our second and final showcase at The Parish. I really love that venue: great sound, lanterns, a variety of vantage points from which to view the stage, and [...]
SXSW has begun! I knew I was off to a good start this morning at 4:45 a.m. when the cabbie came to pick me up from my house to take me to the airport, took one look at me, started playing air-guitar, and said "You're the girl from that one band." Then, in the backseat of his car, and despite being on a mere two and a half hours of sleep, I just couldn't help myself and had to establish my cred by correctly identifying Bad Brains on his iPod. This comment was rewarded by him asking if he could [...]

I first became aware of Flower Travellin' Band as the dudes riding motorcycles naked on the cover of Julian Cope's book "Japrocksampler: How the Post-War Japanese Blew Their Minds on Rock 'n' Roll" . As striking as this image is, what really hooked me on this band was hearing their masterpiece album, Satori . Long before Boris, FTB was creating heavy psyche rock from the land of the rising sun. Imagine my surprise when I saw that they are on tour in the states. Out of all the kooked-out music biz bullshit that [...]
