![EVENT (LA): Red Bull Thre3style (International DJ Competition) [07/14]!](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3563025_lg.jpg)
We here at the WIB headquarters are proud to represent hiphop in ALL aspects of the spectrum. Although we mainly cover music, we do take part in the arts like graffiti, the art of scratching & party rocking (the DJ), and also the breakin' (breakdancing). Last month we covered the Red Bull Emsee (emcee) Competition, now we're going to cover the DJ battle competition here in Los Angeles (07/14). So if any of you DJs, especially fans of the DJ culture are going to be in town next week, make sure you guys hit up the Supperclub [...]

Wow, this week is packed with so many events from all over! Well, let's get right into it.. This wednesday & thursday night, you have two very special classic hiphop groups invading Canada! First and foremost, you have the ' cool ' trio Digable Planets , and you also have Digital Underground ( RIP 2PAC )! They both will be invading Bar None w/ DJs Chin Injeti & Jay Swing , brought to you by the Donnelly Group ! The entrance fee is now $18, but there's also a [...]

We're taking 'em back with this on, nostalgia at it's finest for one of the most refreshing tracks off Gift Raps. Appropriately placed as the intro, 'The Entrance' follows Chip out in Cleveland telling the story of his come up and rise to greatness. Grinding in the streets time after time, making every dollar imaginable to be the freshest dude in the game isn't an easy hustle, but who more suited than Chip Tha Ripper? Did we mention that he produced the track as well alongside the homie Big Duke? Crazy. We're not done yet, more videos in the works. We [...]

( email | facebook ) We still think that Adam Hurst is the finest brew to come out of Portland since locals referred to the place as The Clearing. Previously out-of-print albums Ruin and Dwelling are available once again, through CD Baby. Sample "Flight" from Ruin and "Entrance" from Dwelling just below. Hurst didn't choose the URL "gypsy cello" for nothing: Now go pour yourself a tall [...]
The other day I began to describe the origins of the Sunday Mix Tape feature. Today, I'll describe the end of an era. The second fifty mix tapes, which commenced on January 28th, 2007, saw an increased amount of attention paid to marginalized artists. It was almost as if the first few dozen installments were my way of convincing people to come along for the ride, and the second fifty mix tapes were my way of introducing people to the really good shit. Three years ago, before the reissue and the recent Pitchfork review, you'd never see an [...]

It has begun, people! Earlier this afternoon I received the very first entry for this year's 2nd Annual Swan Fungus Holiday Contest. Yes, the "celebrity" in the photo is recognizable (or at least was to me) as a somewhat-well-known comedian who has also dabbled in television. I was nervous that this campaign might not work, but I now have a glimmer of hope that I might actually receive more submissions from people who want to win the damned thing! I am anxiously awaiting the next entry, so please don't keep me waiting until January 16th. [...]
Destroyer - "Bay of Pigs" ( stream via Stereogum ) This is what happens then the astronaut returns home to find his house burned down by the alien husband of the alien wife he fooled around with...in space. Yo La Tengo - Here To Fall If "Our Way to Fall" was about falling in love, then this one's about loving migraines and trances with the same vigor that you cuddle your spouse. Entrance - Lookout! NPR offers free SXSW sampler and preview (MP3)
I remembered to bring my computer home from work this week, so I can actually post the mix tape I intended to post last week. It's always fun looking through my record collection and hard drive for weird covers, so hopefully you won't be disappointed by the selection this week. One or two of these might have been posted before (I know for a fact Seaweed covering Jonathan Richman was shared on the Sub Pop Peel Sessions post), but most of these should be baby-spankin' new. Calexico covers Nick Drake, then Nick Drake turns around and covers...ugh...Bob Dylan. [...]
Spontaneous and bored, the kids from swirly, avant, rhythmically-moving outfit Excepter were hanging out in Chinatown in LA recently and were, well, waiting for a bus. For maybe what seemed like a long time to them, because they broke out into a free-expression jam with their instruments while they waited. That's all we have for you folks. Nothing earth-shattering, just a band doing what they do while they're killing time. The band's latest, fourth record, Debt Dept. , is out now on Paw Tracks . (mp3) Excepter - Entrance [...]

You know, their budget for the tour couldn't have been large and they didn't get many people to work on it, but this is one of the fiercest entrances I have ever seen. And although I haven't forgiven them for their latest album cover, I have to give them props for being the most ferosh girl band today.

"Everyone has AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS!" Louise had a lovely birthday dinner (she made traditional Danish foods, and also there was a bowl of macaroni and cheese with hot dogs!), we played a rousing game of Apples to Apples, and now Tom, Thesy and I are watching Team America: World Police , which pathetic Thesy has never seen before. The pathetic girl. Hey, here's a mix tape! Please enjoy! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB [...]
