At a quaint little coffee shop tucked away from the chaos of SXSW's 6th St, PopWreckers Bethany and Joshua encountered what was to be their wildest (sex! cursing! Mozart !) interview yet: Roxy Epoxy & The Rebound . And yes, this is the same Roxy Epoxy of The Epoxies . Bethany, PopWreckoning: Sorry, but this was a last minute interview for me, so I don't have any questions planned or research done. Roxy Epoxy , Roxy [...]

Look at that sunavabitch go! Doesn't it just give you a tingly sensation all over, especially in the thyroid and reproductive organs? Since today happens to be the 63rd anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, I though it only proper to genuflect a little upon the event and its enduring legacy. It was the ultimate product of the American "can do" spirit, the fireworks display that kicked off the beginning of the American Century (give or take a half-dozen decades). It showed the world that we had not only developed the means to end human civilization, [...]

Phew! It's all been going soooooooo faaaaaaast ! And have I had time to tell you half the stories I want to? Of course not... But today we're off to Mayne Island for a fortnight --that's TWO WHOLE WEEKS-- of downtime. I cannot wait until we board the ferry. It's like some sort of cosmic temporal transmogrfier; you can actually feel the time slow right down the minute you step on board. Glorious... I will have my laptop with me, and plan to catch up with you all. [...]
"If Dave has me eating meat other than people meat, GOMP him." -- Ted, taking a stand on his potential vegan lapse in "The World Is in the Turlet" video, via IM "I like that you didn't challenge that also. You accepted that you possess the power to creep people out." -- Tom, noting Spike's embrace of his most obvious superpower "I like Adam Sandler, but I don't like his movies." -- Spike, offering an odd declaration of fandom "You can't cuff a ghost." -- Tom, pointing out the [...]

A couple of weeks ago, I found myself contemplating the parallels between Bridezillas and the " two minutes hate " of Orwell's 1984 , when I happened to jog loose a random memory about a story I read in grade school. It was about a future society where the populace was kept in line though a ubiquitous food additive that made those who ingested it susceptible to subliminals embedded in the (government-controlled) television broadcasts. A teenage chemistry whiz manages to unravel the secrets of the totalitarian state's social control program, but like Winston Smith, ends up learning [...]

"Names would be as useless to them as their non-existent tongues ." Thank you, Roy Thomas, you rascally one. That line never fails to bring a smile to my face, and I'm not big on smiling, either. Way back in my undergrad days, a professor of mine called me out on my unusual style of writing – the heavy use of ellipses and dashes, the twisted and recursive use of qualifying phrases and clauses, the strange juxtaposition of highbrow terminology and vernacular slang – and asked me how such a thing came to [...]

There have not been any posts in a good while, but that is because I didn't know The Epoxies had any MP3s up (OK, that is not the only reason). If I had been privy to the knowledge that Radiation was just sitting out there on the Internet, waiting for me to pimp it like Hank Hill pimps sweet lady propane, then pimping would have commenced previously. I have yet to listen to their self-titled debut as much as Stop The Future , but again, their debut does not have Radiation on it (not a [...]

Thanks to Peter over at Coast is Clear for showing the way to the link for "Radiation," by Portland's The Epoxies . I've liked this song for quite some time now but didn't know where it lived. Tracking it down to the group's label, Fat Wreck Chords (whoa, too clever, man) put me in touch with other enjoyable bands, some of which I knew, most of which I happily did not. Here are several that tickled my fancy. Royal we'll post more in the near future. Click band names [...]

Blondie. Elastica. The Sounds. Was haben diese Bands allesamt gemeinsam? Schrammelige Poppunkgitarren, Verbeugungen Richtung New Wave und charismatische Sängerinnen.
The Now Time Delegation "Nothing But a Heartache" (The Flirtations cover) I had never heard the original version of this song until the fabulous Rhino box set One Kiss Can Lead to Another: Girl Group Sounds Lost and Found came out last year. And though it's difficult to pick a favorite from a collection so chock-full of gems, this song was (and is) defintitely my No. 1. Similarly, until I'd heard the original last year and went on an immediate hunt for any band who [...]

I need to check if my new file management site is linking up with elbo so you guys get my favorite Epoxies track. Enjoy! [MP3] Expoxies â€" "Radiation"
It has been brought to my attention that there’s a Vincent Furnier fan amongst my readers who did not appreciate my mockery of the man in the October 31 post. I’m a reflective sort who is willing to admit to his mistakes, so maybe I was a little harsh on poor Alice. I was raised to respect to elderly, after all. It's just that I prefer listening to Shampoo . My use of “dragged off†was not indicative of my wife’s attitude, but of my usual, surly disposition when it comes to being left [...]
The other day, I accidentally stumbled on a web site designed to carefully guide you through the difficult task of selecting which era-specific Adam Ant costume best suits you along with guidelines on what is needed to create each look. May I just say how awesome that is? It inspired me to do an artist-specific post because Adam Ant albums see more time on my turntable than any others. OK Go "Ant Music" (Adam and the Ants cover) [...]
