This puzzle has a quirky, humorous theme and plenty of musical references. Have at it! I'll remind you of the free AcrossLite software to open and solve .puz files on your computer. Highly recommended. There's an iPhone/iPad app for that program, and there's Shortyz for Android. If you're a novice solver, check out some helpful tips [...]

Eric Burdon performing at South by San Jose/Gram Parsons Foundation party. Sorry we keep bringing up our recent trip to Austin, but ... you gotta see this. It's Brendan Benson, the excellent rock singer/songwriter, performing at a party for the Gram Parsons Foundation . Suddenly he introduces Eric Burdon, former lead singer of the Animals - and away they go, on "When I Was Young." It was one of those performances that literally makes your hair stand up if you are lucky enough to witness it in person. Sorry we couldn't [...]

Words and puzzle by Brendan Welcome back to this monthly feature! I brought you our first indie music crossword puzzle in this post , and now I'm back with another. This one is decidedly funnier, inasmuch as a crossword puzzle can be funny (we may differ in opinion on that). The filler clues are on the easier side, but the theme entries might take some cleverness to work through (although the puzzle title, given above, should be helpful ...). Fear not, though, there is plenty here to enjoy for puzzlers [...]
We still have SXSW hangover, so bear with us a few days. In the meantime, here's one of the highlights of our entire experience: Eric Burdon of the Animals guesting with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, on "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place."

An unexpected addition on the final night of this year's South by Southwest festival, 60s pop icon (and recent Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame inductee) Donovan played a surprise set at The Palm Door in downtown Austin on Saturday. Though he was not mentioned in the SXSW itinerary or on its website, an unceremonious listing of his name on the festival calendar in Friday's Austin Chronicle drew a few hundred fans to the tiny venue: "I didn't come to South by Southwest this year expecting to perform," Donovan explained to the crowd. "But somebody [...]
You gotta love Bruce Springsteen for bringing the house down with an old folk song about an America that's long gone in so many ways. Here's Bruce, the E Street Band, and special guests: Arcade Fire (Win Butler, Régine Chassagne, and Will Butler), Joe Ely, Tom Morello, Alejandro Escovedo, The Low Anthem, Eric Burdon of The Animals, and others singing the Woody Guthrie chestnut "This Land is Your Land", also heard below the Bruce clip. Thanks to YouTube uploader MeYouDanzig for an awesome clip, shot live at The Moody Theater, Austin, TX - SXSW [...]

Brittany Howard of the Alabama Shakes. AUSTIN - Perhaps at this junction it might be helpful to briefly summarize the physical nature of the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival, so it can serve as a road map of sorts for the stories that will follow today. SXSW is a four-day (or five, depending on who is doing the counting) conference for anyone interested in music: industry insiders, artists, publicists and fans. "Official" participants have purchased a badge or a wristband that allows one access to various panels, speeches, keynote addresses (like Bruce Springsteen's [...]
Yesterday, the Boss came to town. Bruce Springsteen delivered his SXSW Keynote Address in the afternoon, and in the evening, he and his E Street Band played their much-touted SXSW show. I didn't go, but I talked to a bunch of people who did, and nobody had anything bad to say about it. As luck would have it, the show took place on Woody Guthrie's birthday, and Springsteen marked the occasion by covering "This Land Is Your Land" and bringing along an all-star crew of People Springsteen Likes: Arcade Fire, Tom Morello, the Animals' Eric Burdon, Alejandro Escovedo, Joe Ely, [...]

Tom Morello rips it up as the Nightwatchman. AUSTIN - First off, our apologies today for all the up-and-coming acts that we were supposed to spotlight - Thursday at the South by Southwest music conference, the big names took over. Everywhere we looked, there seemed to be one superstar or another under foot. We couldn't help but stumble into a show with a familiar voice or two. We started the day in a parking lot: namely the front lot of the great independent record store Waterloo Records [...]

Ladies and gentlemen, Eric Burdon! AUSTIN - There is nothing gradual or tentative about the South by Southwest (SXSW) music conference; you jump in and either start swimming madly or you just drown. We tried to make a schedule for Wednesday, the first full day of the music madness, but it stayed folded in a pocket for the duration. We saw more than one couple frantically flipping through the Austin Chronicle or an official SXSW book (like a large catalog, really) for guidance, and looking more [...]

ward robinson Middle Class is Mike Atta, Jeff Atta, Matt Simon and Mike Patton (no, not that Mike Patton). Depending on who you ask, you might be told they are the first ever hardcore band, or you might get kicked in the gut with a pre-scuffed Urban Outfitters combat boot. After a very long spell, the band reunited last year to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Frontier Records—the label that put out Middle Class' 1979 EP, "Out of Vogue." Now they're returning to the Echoplex to play a badass L.A. RECORD show [...]

"That ain't the way to have fun " A piss-poor joke, I'll grant you - but sometimes that, & some renewed media coverage of the " Brotherly Leader and Guide of the First of September Great Revolution of the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya " is all it takes to get me off the pile of gold & posting some music again...
