In an exclusive excerpt from the new book Eric Clapton, Day by Day: The Early Years, 1963-1982, Marc Roberty takes us into the earliest days of Derek and the Dominoes - with the arrival of key collaborator Bobby Whitlock. All of this takes place before the arrival of Duane Allman, the doomed slide-guitar genius of Allman Brothers fame. It's even [...]

You know who really deserves to get more love? Dads. They've been on my mind, and in my line of vision, a lot lately. The first of my recent father encounters was last week on the flight from Santiago to Sydney, sitting in a row with the cutest little baby girl, who was probably around 18 months old, her mom, and her dad, who spent the entire 14-hour flight doting on her. Maybe it's partly my own paternal instincts kicking in (as they have been since a few years ago when I cradled a naked baby while [...]
It's Father's Day on Sunday, which means there'll be much breaking out of Cat Stevens' "Father and Son" and Will Smith's "Just the Two of Us" across the Internet. Since you'll surely be getting your dose of sentimentality elsewhere, here are handful of significantly less wholesome songs about fathers. There are plenty that spring to mind (although the, ahem, daddy of the lot — Korn's "Daddy" — turns out to not in fact be about Jonathan Davis's father at all, hence its absence from this list). But still, there are plenty of other candidates, and all of them are better than [...]
John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers: Steppin’ Out [ purchase ] Delaney and Bonnie with Eric Clapton: Poor Elijah [ purchase ] Derek and the Dominos: It’s Too Late [ purchase ] There are some pretty obscure pieces of trivia in the Guinness Book of World Records, but “Artist associated with the most And Bands” is probably not one of them. My guess would be that the record is held by Eric Clapton. [...]

Eric Clapton, Klaus Voormann, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, c.1970s
Every so often we like to look back at an all-too maligned genre and offer a little redemption. This week, it's time to take a fresh look at Blues-Rock! Every now again, I...

The Blues, the beginning of Rock and Rock as we now know it. It's a musical genre, a feeling, a philosophy, and for some, a way of life. The Blues can lift you up one day only to describe an awful feeling inside the next. From 'Blues Power' to 'Folsom Prison Blues' the music is a powerful medium through which many men and women have articulated the highs and lows of life on earth. Below are my top ten Blues musicians of all time ranging from the originator Robert Johnson to the modern day shredder Jack White. 1. [...]

Here's a very decent 1992 doc about the mysterious Robert Johnson . No original Johnson recordings are used, but narrator John Hammond does a good job in his renditions. "Honeyboy" Edwards and Johnny Shines also appear, as well as Eric Clapton and Keith Richards. Thanks to T. Tex Edwards for this one.

While Eric Clapton jammed with the Allman Brothers Band at MSG for last month's Crossroads Guitar Festival , it was not the first time the acts met up in recent years. Back in 2009 Clapton sat in with the Allman Brothers Band as part of their 40th Anniversary March Madness Run at the Beacon Theatre. Slowhand guested with the Allmans on March 19 and 20 for each show's entire second sets. Japanese company Mid Valley Records issued professionally-shot video of EC's March 19 [...]
As Pattie Boyd talks about old photos of George Harrison and Eric Clapton, she remains - perhaps appropriately, given that she was the inspiration for Clapton's love-lorn "Layla" - unable to decide which had been more inspirational. "I think probably George was very inspirational," Boyd says in the attached video. "He was very easy to photograph, and always looked fabulous. [...]

Eric Clapton: Let it Rain [ Purchase mp3 @ Amazon ] I may not be of the "Clapton is God" school - but I am not far off. I have gone out of my way/paid big bucks to see him in concert on 3 continents (not because I traveled for the purpose, but because we were in the same place at the same time) - most recently in Istanbul, Turkey, 2011 but also as far back as Blind Faith @ Seattle in '69. This collection [...]

We weren't planning on posting anything for a while as we're still in shock over the tragic events that took place in Boston this afternoon. That said, music heals and songs like I Shall Be Released have gotten us through terrible times. So we wanted to share a performance from Saturday night. On Saturday night Robbie Robertson made a rare appearance on stage as part of Eric Clapton's final set of the Crossroads Guitar Festival at Madison Square Garden. As rare as performances by Robbie Robertson are, it's [...]

The second night of Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival [Photos, Setlist and Videos From Night One HERE ] already had a jam-packed lineup of six-stringers ready to go, but that didn't stop EC from bringing out a surprise guest during his show-closing set. Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones emerged with Clapton for Key To The Highway and Sweet Little Rock and Roller. Later in Clapton's set, he brought out Robbie Robertson and Andy Fairweather-Low before welcoming most of the weekend's guests for a finale. Here's video [...]

Every three years since 2004 Eric Clapton has called upon his famous guitarist friends and those young axeslingers he admires for a benefit called the Crossroads Guitar Festival to raise funds for Clapton's Crossroads Centre drug treatment center in Antigua. Following the 2004 edition in Dallas and 2007 and 2010 editions near Chicago, this year's Crossroads Fest takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Last night was the first of the event's two nights at the "World's Greatest Arena." [Photos by @languagestrange [...]
Paul McCartney's as-yet untitled new solo album is said to feature guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton and - in a surprise - the living members of Nirvana. Mick Ronson, of Amy Winehouse fame, produced four tracks. McCartney, of course, made a stir late last year when he appeared on stage with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear [...]

We all know that moment in Say Anthing when John Cusack's Lloyd Dobbler makes the ultimate move and goes to the Diane, the beautiful valedictorian's house, blaring Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" from his boombox in an effort to win her heart. We all love this scene because it speaks to an integral part of us, the part that wants relationships to work, that wants them to be resurrected even when they seem unsalvageable. As beautiful as being in love is, the idea that sometimes right when a relationship seems broken it can still somehow be [...]
