Taken from the forthcoming April album Moving Up Living Down , Eric Hutchinson 's newest single "Watching You Watching Him" sounds more like a classic Traveling Wilburys song than something you might hear on pop radio today. But we think that's the point -- and the relocated New Yorker has always leaned on 70's retro pop influences more than any contemporaries. New project is Hutchinson's first since his breakout 2008 album Sounds Like This and the iTunes hit "Rock and Roll". Watch the in-studio video after the jump... [...]

At this point, I won't even pretend I have any longtime readers, but about four years ago I would post occasionally about my love of the piano as used on pop music . There's just something about that sound that really grabs my ear. The instrument has an incredible range of harmonics. It has strings, but it's a percussion instrument. Essentially, it was invented as a combination the clavichord and harpsichord. Part of the sound comes from the force with which the keys are struck and part comes from how the strings are allowed to vibrate. [...]

During my acoustic singer/songwriter music phase one artist that I listened to constantly was Eric Hutchinson. In a world where lyrics are sometimes folded into the background Hutchinson is still a songwriter in the true sense of the word. A person that agonizes over every line until they are perfect. He's still one of the funniest and most personable musicians that I ever seen live. All that being said, Hutchinson in on the brink of releasing his newest album which will be called Moving Up, Living Down . The first single from the album is called [...]

First Lady Of American Idol Kelly Clarkson was just one of the big names to attend Muhammad Ali's Celebrity Fight Night charity event in Phoenix over the weekend. And while there, Clarkson, who says her new album is due out in September , sang a rousing, bluesy cover of Eric Hutchinson's "Why Don't You Try." Watch below. Last month Kelly announced on Facebook that "one of my favorites on the new album is highly influenced by Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. Eric Hutchinson wrote it ….the album is [...]

Kelly Clarkson previewed a new song called "You Still Won't Know What It's Like" at a benefit gig in December, and while we don't know if it will appear on the First Lady of American Idol 's fifth LP, we at least now have a bit more info about the album straight from Kelly herself. And thank goodness—because that AI greatest hits compilation featuring the Texas songstress just isn't going to cut it! See what Kelly has to say about her upcoming release after the jump. [...]

The famed celebrity gossip blogger doesn't care what you think, as long as you keep reading and come to the show
In an effort to rid himself of a (this time figurative) black eye , celebrity blogger Perez Hilton is taking the likes of Ida Maria and Ladyhawke and putting them on the road to once again demonstrate how with it he is. The two lovely ladies, along with Julian Perretta , Eric Hutchinson , and Frankmusik , will be a part of the Perez Hilton Presents Tour 2009. That's right, the group of an American, a Kiwi, a Norwegian and two Brits will go on a tour [...]

Words could not begin to express the collective sorrow experienced yesterday at the news of the passing of Michael Jackson . In this clip of Warner Bros. Records recording artist Eric Hutchinson performing "OK, Its Alright With Me" on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Hutchinson pays homage with a single sequined glove atop his piano: Watch "OK, It's Alright with Me" video : Eric Hutchinson Official Website
Around the blogosphere today, I am tripped out on the following rock-a-toids: - Singer-guitarist Dylan Connor , whose music sounds fresh, orchestral in parts and rockin' pop all around - Take a listen at his MySpace page or check out his snappin' video for Breakaway and Burn , featuring cool Burning Man footage. He also has a pretty cool wedding video , too! His press folks also wrote... "Touring the Northeast throughout February and March, Connor is supporting both Breakaway Republic, and his ultimate tribute to Weezer, the Almost [...]

I've posted various covers on the blog before but recently I seem to be coming across so many new ones that really deserve cover age! Recently a couple very good covers compilation albums have dropped; 'Dark Was the Night' being one of them organized by The National for the good cause of aids. The other one is 'Starbucks: Sweetheart' which was unsurprisingly compiled by Starbucks and instead of the money [...]

I've been looking for an excuse to post a bunch of Motown covers, but I've struggled with finding a story. Then I saw that Popmatters posted it's 25 favorites . I agree with some of their choices, but "Bernadette" as #1? I agree with some of their choices, but "Bernadette"? That wouldn't even make my top 20. Plus, the list seems flawed because it includes songs from the label's Los Angeles period (1972 and on), when everyone knows the true meaning of Motown is "Motor City." Once the label left Detroit, it's sound [...]

After closing out 2008 with his hit single "Rock & Roll" in the #1 spot at AAA radio, Eric Hutchinson just kicked off 2009 with a performance on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and now he's set to go on two tours. His outing with O.A.R. launches this Thursday in Spokane, WA and he just finalized plans to tour with G. Love & Special Sauce thereafter. (See below for itinerary.) Watch "Rock & Roll" video : [...]

Eric Hutchinson released his latest album, Sounds Like This , this past May. The album can easily be classified as a pop-rock-folk style that has been proven time and time again to please the public. In September of this year, Hutchinson was awarded the "VH1 You Oughta Know" award of 2008. Obviously, this is a clear sign of his growing fame. On Sounds Like This , all of his major influences can be heard. The most profound influence that the listener can hear in every one of his songs is [...]

Live in Cambridge: Red Hot and Sold Out If you don't already have tickets to see Eric Hutchinson this evening at the Middle East , put your car keys back in your pocket and warm up your CD player. This one is completely sold out - and that's probably the only way you are going to hear him today. Maybe the RSL Music Blog can help - [...]
That's right; tonight you're getting three for one! Contrary to what you might think, I'm not all about big names and high-profile artists who sell millions of records and are all over the Internet. I also love indie artists. In fact the music is all that matters. Sometimes I (virtually) bump into songs, albums or videos from either unsigned or not-yet famous bands or solo acts. I like that so much. This morning for example, I woke up and found a friend request on my Facebook page from [...]
