Hearing the new single from Cardinal takes me back to the 1990s and the early days of the Internet, when music geeks (ahem) trawled Prodigy newsgroups to find far-flung but like-minded friends and share new sounds. well, this is a bit of surprise, a welcome one in fact. eric matthews and richard davies have come together and recorded a new cardinal record which is called hymns, and is due out on jan 12, 2012. its their first since their masterful pop/rock/orchestration-heavy 1994 self title debut - which i am a huge fan of. i tried keeping up with both guys over the years, and both have released a bunch of records, most notably matthews' debut its heavy in here , and davies' telegraph - both incredible records and definitely worth seeking [...]
How did we get by before the internet? Cardinal's always been one of those mythical bands to me - I've read about them, heard bands influenced by them, but I can't recall ever seeing one of their CDs in a record store. It wasn't until Spotify emerged that I finally got to check out this duo (look up Cardinal's re-issued 1994 self-titled debut with eleven bonus tracks!) and hear their sweet pop songs. Cardinal was originally a trio comprised of Australian ex-pat and former Mole Richard Davies, multi-instrumentalist Eric Matthews and drummer Bob Fay, but soon became primarily a collaboration between Davies and Matthews. Davies and Matthews strengths (songwriting and arranging respectively) complimen ted each other perfectly, but sadly their work together did not last very long.
