Richard Davies and Eric Matthews of Cardinal: The TVD Interview

Richard Davies and Eric Matthews of Cardinal: The TVD Interview Cardinal play Washington, DC's Velvet Lounge tonight, 5/15. The baroque, neo-psychedelia of Cardinal's classic, self-titled debut album couldn't have been more out of step with the indie rock world when it was released in 1994. The album paired the prodigious talents of Australian songwriter Richard Davies, who had previously been a creative driving force in The Moles, with Eric Matthews, a bravura arranger and multi-instrumentalist who plays everything from harpsichord to trumpet and marimba. Critically acclaimed upon its release, the record was both strangely anachronistic and remarkably prescient––it's [...]

Cardinal

MP3: Cardinal – Carbolic Smoke Ball

Cardinal: Hymns

Cardinal Hymns Fire Records [2012] Fire Note Says: Richard Davies and Eric Matthews reunite 18 years later for Cardinal's sophomore album Hymns . Album Review: 18 years is a long time to wait for a sophomore outing but that is exactly the case from Richard Davies and Eric Matthews early band Cardinal. Since that time both guys have had a nice music career as Matthews has [...]

Stream: Cardinal, 'Love Like Rain'

Hearing the new single from Cardinal takes me back to the 1990s and the early days of the Internet, when music geeks (ahem) trawled Prodigy newsgroups to find far-flung but like-minded friends and share new sounds. It was via a transatlantic mixtape — a handmade cassette — that I discovered a clamorous Australian psych-pop outfit named the Moles [ "Surf's Up," for you noise-pop kids looking for a cool song to cover]. The band was fronted by singer-songwriter Richard Davies , whom I would encounter a short time later, in 1994, when he teamed up with [...]

cardinal "love like rain"

well, this is a bit of surprise, a welcome one in fact. eric matthews and richard davies have come together and recorded a new cardinal record which is called hymns, and is due out on jan 12, 2012. its their first since their masterful pop/rock/orchestration-heavy 1994 self title debut - which i am a huge fan of. i tried keeping up with both guys over the years, and both have released a bunch of records, most notably matthews' debut its heavy in here , and davies' telegraph - both incredible records and definitely worth seeking [...]

Listen to new Cardinal track – "Love Like Rain"

How did we get by before the internet? Cardinal's always been one of those mythical bands to me - I've read about them, heard bands influenced by them, but I can't recall ever seeing one of their CDs in a record store. It wasn't until Spotify emerged that I finally got to check out this duo (look up Cardinal's re-issued 1994 self-titled debut with eleven bonus tracks!) and hear their sweet pop songs. Richard Davies and Eric Matthews [...]

Cardinal Reunion On Again?

Cardinal Reunion On Again? Eric Matthews was recently interviewed by Stereogum , and it appears his on again, off again collaboration with songwriter Richard Davies is on again for the moment: "With Richard and I, there are always ups and downs. But, where we are currently is pretty much in a up," Matthews says. "And things are friendly. Often with us things can be tense. So this is a nice buffer, the space between us." Plans for a new Cardinal album (their first since the 1994 debut) appear to be back on track. Matthews had [...]

Cardinal - Toy Bell EP

Cardinal was originally a trio comprised of Australian ex-pat and former Mole Richard Davies, multi-instrumentalist Eric Matthews and drummer Bob Fay, but soon became primarily a collaboration between Davies and Matthews. Davies and Matthews strengths (songwriting and arranging respectively) complimen ted each other perfectly, but sadly their work together did not last very long. The collaboration resulted in a lone 7" EP and a stunning 10 track LP/CD. Originally issued on the late, lamented Flydaddy label, the self-titled CD was reissued a few years ago with 11 bonus tracks, including 2 of [...]

Download: Seinking Ships, 'One Day Forever' In his collaboration with Richard Davies as Cardinal and solo outings including two essential albums for Sub Pop (1995's "It's Heavy in Here" and '97's "The Lateness of the Hour," go get 'em), Eric Matthews made lush headphones music that turned the space between your ears into kaleidoscopic mush. Something about the orchestration and arrangements made you hold your breath, or search your mind for some fitting piece of cinema. Same goes for Seinking Ships, his new collaboration with Ohioan Christopher Seink. The collaboration's debut album "Museum Quality Capture" came out last week on S-Curve Records, [...]
