Eric Whitacre , a renowned Grammy-award winning composer and conductor, has just created a beautiful rendition, a touching lullaby, of the childhood storybook classic "Goodnight Moon" . Many of us may all know, love and remember "Goodnight Moon" from our childhoods and the wonderful memories it created. What better way to introduce "Goodnight Moon" to the generation of tomorrow and create lasting childhood memories than by playing the classic storybook re-imagined as a lullaby! The single "Goodnight Moon" is off Eric Whitacre's recently released new album 'Water Night' [...]
The Los Angeles Times has a tad bit more journalistic integrity than I do, so you're more likely to trust their opinion than you are mine. The reviewer on hand at the Walt Disney Concert Hall was far less impressed than I was with "Paradise Lost." But I wasn't there trying to imagine the concert [...]
Another day, another Swan Fungus reader finds their way into my presence. I promise one of these times if you approach me I won't act like I'm having a panic attack. It's just…in my mind you're all so mentally disturbed. And you all carry weapons around. Sharp weapons. Seriously, what type of person reads this [...]
Good times, people. Good times. Guys night out yesterday was a total shit-show. It involved $112 worth of shots at the first bar we hit, a stolen bottle of Jack from another bar, and a whirlwind finale at Birds. I'm amazed I made it through my work day today and was still functional enough to [...]
K, so there was some music fest or something. There was music, blogging, beer-sweat T-shirts, but mostly blogging. It was beautiful, probably. But that was last week! This week, what we care about is stodgy guys discovering Youtube . I just won't let my developing classical music-blogging obsession die. Here's a composer who pieced together Youtube auditions for his piece into a Powerpoint-ish purple-gradient-tastic 250-person choir. What poor grad student edited this into semi-coherence? We will never know, but his windows on our walls of many lanlord-friendly [...]

"A big seller at the recent ACDA Convention in New York City, 'Eric Whitacre' is a stunning collection of songs composed in the classical style of Monteverdi, Debussy and Prokofiev, but with inspiration from such groups as the Beatles, Sting, Queen, Madonna and Peter Gabriel. His choice of texts also reflects a broad range of poets - Octavio Paz, Ogden Nash, James Joyce, e.e. cummings and Emily Dickenson, religious poets being conspicuous in their absence, although 'three songs of faith' are included here. The mixed-voice Brigham Young U. Singers do justice to Whitacre's difficult, eclectic, wonderful, soaring compositions. 12 songs, [...]

We all need a break from the norm at times. Want to hear something different? Take a listen below to Eric Whitacre's "October", a stunning composition for band. It features lush musical swelling and gorgeous soundscapes. The piece is simply breathtaking, from start to finish. The opening oboe line and the positively beautiful, quiet ending get me every time. Photo, titled "October Morning", credit here . See past entries: the first in choral , the second in choral , the third in choral , and the [...]
