I've been a passive listener of Billy Joel's original work since middle school, I guess. But way back in my emergent years, I was a true blue fan, sifting through his early work as a high tenor, singing along with his songs at summer camp campfires, performing Just The Way You Are for talent shows, tagging along with a friend to see the master perform in the midst of the We Didn't Start The Fire era, struggling to come to terms with his mid-career rock and roll, and the drum-driven pop path which he [...]
For his latest album Franklin and Vermont (Rock Ridge), L.A. singer/songwriter Ernie Halter retreated to his makeshift bathroom "studio" of all places to get back to the more intimate appeal of his earlier works. Playing nearly all the instruments himself, Halter imbues his self-produced songs with a personal touch, drawing into focus his wry "sensitive guy" sensibilities and the soulful folk/pop melodies that have made him a staple at clubs like L.A.'s Hotel Cafe and a social networking poster boy with more than a half million Twitter followers. And it's pretty [...]

As a thank you to Justin Bieber for choosing to cover his ballad "Come Home To Me" (and promote his music to his legions of Twitter followers), singer-songwriter Ernie Halter returns the favor by covering the pop star's hit song "Baby" . Jump below to watch Halter take on The Biebs' breakout tune — including the Ludacris rap! — on an acoustic guitar by jumping below. Ernie Halter - "Baby" (Justin Bieber Cover) Bieber is apparently a [...]

How Justin Bieber managed to record a track when he's been so busy touring is a mystery. But that's just what he did! The Biebs covered the track ' Come Home To Me ' by Ernie Halter . And for all those non-beliebers out there who thought he'd be finished once his voice hit puberty... I don't think so! The 17 year old singer posted a link on his twitter page for his fans to download the track, "@erniehalter come home [...]
It's been awhile since I did a covers series, but we're going to do it differently this time. Namely, more bite-sized.* 1. Solid Gold - Danger Zone (Kenny Loggins) - A slick update of a classic dude song. Less homoeroticism, more hot flight instructors. (One can hope.) [from Synchronize | buy ] 2. Cee Lo Green - No One's Gonna Love You (Band of Horses) - I'm not sure why Cee Lo decided to cover this, but it turned out pretty nicely. He could sing my grocery [...]

I really appreciate when artists are more in touch with the past than I am. I wasn't alive when Squeeze's 'Black Coffee In Bed' was gracing MTV in 1982, and I would have never discovered the fun little jam if not for Ernie Halter's cover of it on his newest 'Franklin & Vermont.' I'll have to admit that I like Halter's version better, but the truth is that the song (which I consider a standout on the album) wouldn't exist without these 802s heart-throbs. Despite the fact that it is a cover, 'Black Coffee [...]

It's another busy week here in the boyhowdy household, what with our production of Willy Wonka a week away and midterm grading upon us at my day job. But I'm not even home today - I'm three hours away, crashing in an old friend's off-season beach house, so I can attend tomorrow's annual conference of the state's School Committees and Superintendents, where they'll be discussing social media in the classroom and school policy crafting, two subjects near and dear to my media-teaching heart. It's not a vacation per se; indeed, with [...]

So last September I predicted that Ernie Halter 's live album would be on my best of 2009 list, and if I had in fact made such a list, its place on said list would have been assured. Since I didn't though, I'll let you know now that if you missed it last year, you should check it out this year for sure! While you're at it, you should also pick up his new album, Franklin & Vermont , and alternate playing them for the next week. I said it before about Ernie and [...]

For years, Racer and I have waxed on (and off) about the splendors of music in a live setting. After all, the live setting is the most natural way to catch a musician bearing his or her soul. On a good night, that soul will be felt with the heat of a thousand suns and will have a lingering affect on how you listen to music for years to come. Capturing these momentous occasions can be like capturing the proverbially lightening in a bottle. Musicians have their off nights. They're bound to err a time or two in their performances, [...]

I haven't said this many times this year, but I'm going to predict that Ernie Halter Live is going to show up on my best of list at the end of the year. It's been on heavy rotation ever since I started spinning it a couple of weeks ago, and it isn't losing any steam. It's the first time I've listened to Ernie Halter , so it's surprising to me that it's a live album, especially after doing some digging, when I found out that he's only been around for a few years now and only has [...]

Had the Trashcan Sinatras emerged in the middle of this decade instead of the mid-'80s, I suspect they'd be festival-playing, Pitchfork-approved indie-pop heroes. As it is, the Scottish sextet has had an up-and-down ride — three brilliant albums in the '90s (and some MTV buzz) followed by record-label woes that caused the band to declare bankruptcy; and a fallow period followed by an alliance with producer Andy Chase (Ivy) that resulted in the comeback albums "Weightlifting" (2005) and "In the Music," which came out this month. The Trashies' cult following has always been strong in L.A., [...]

[A heaping helping of birthday wishes to David Byrne, and now to capsulize a busy night in the city:] Even if you steer clear of the boldfaced names playing the bigger rooms — Mos Def at the House of Blues, Murs and Tech N9ne at the Key Club, the Indigo Girls at the El Rey Theatre — tonight has a lot to offer. Three of L.A. most promising up-and-comers, Afternoons , the Happy Hollows and Warpaint , combine to fill [...]

Smooth. As glass. Like a clean shaven pate. A new born baby's butt. You can call me a cynical bastard if you want, but I expected this album to be a poor man's version of Jack Johnson or Ryan Adams . Not sure where that impression came from, but it was my initial vibe. Fortunately for all parties, Ernie Halter has more in common with Jonny Lang or AJ Croce . He brings soulful vocals with a bit of a funky vibe, a [...]

So, there's a new look to SquirrelFood today. This change was not by choice though- the Wordpress update earlier this week broke my theme, and while trying to "hack" a workaround to some things, I broke it further. Now, I'm stuck with a half-assed theme that I'm not crazy about, but I'll try to make work. Hopefully, I'll find some time this weekend to either modfiy the these to my liking, or find one I do like. Either way, I hope all this rearrangement isn't too comfusing. I know a lot of readers are reading via RSS anyway, and the [...]
