The slice of early seventies Turkish psych that is Ersen's "Gonese Don Cicegim" has once again found itself sliding in and out of recent DJ sets. Culled from one of my favorite compilations of the last decade-Academy Records masterfully curated Obsession-Ersen works the primal, shreds, half-whispers and then some. Thanksgiving is just around the corner. The leaves have been stretching themselves out to catch as many timid autumn rays as possible before turning brittle and brown. Pilsners and IPAs are giving way to porters and stouts. Perhaps the hopes of Philadelphia sports fans, ultimately dashed by our beloved Phillies, are beginning to get up again, so that the Eagles may ultimately dash them. And Americans from coast to coast are preparing to commemorate something by surrounding themselves with family to watch football, talk politics, and (most importantly) gorge themselve s stupid with the year's bountiful harvest. We'll feast upon all [...]

After yesterday's Swedish folk/psych revival, here's a Turkish 70s reissue thanks to Andy Votel of Finders Keepers , one of the greatest cratediggers. There's an ongoing underground trend for the last few years for cosmic stuff, forgotten European disco tracks, timeless Eurovision classics, eclectic traditional music etc. Thanks to this, Turkish funk/soul/folk scene has seen a surge of interest, and lots of interesting stuff are taking place, like the Istanbul based label Saturn , who's going to start releasing re-edits, or the Anatolian disco nights taking places all around the world, partly fueled by Baris [...]

Various Artists, Obsession (Bully 2008) Dozens of psych comps have been popping up like mushrooms for the last few years but this one goes deeper and wider than most (hitting India, Turkey, Brazil etc). In fact it didn't have anything I'd ever even heard of outside of Ersen (and that one I only knew because he's got a whole reissue of his own on Kinders Keepers). Loving the variety on this, from weird spacey strummy Brazilian stuff to head imploding guitar burners. Arif Sag - "Osman Pehlivan" [...]

Finders Keepers Records returns to form with this incredible record from Stones Throw 's favorite '70s Anatolian psych-funk superstar, Ersen . This is on par with some of the releases that made me fall in love with Finders Keepers in the first place (namely, Susan Christie , Selda , and Jean-Claude Vannier ). As Madlib 's little bro Oh No puts it, "Yo Ersen music is ridiculous dope!!!! I'd love to flip this!!!!!" Please do. mp3: Ersen :: Sor Kendine [...]
Thanks to Dodge for the tip on this waaay out there " rare psych " compilation, Obsession , which is out now on Bully Records . I don't have much background on the origins of these tracks -- Turntable Lab says "there's nothing clearly defining this batch of songs except that they will all melt your face like that Nazi dude at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark " -- but I'm really hoping that Madlib 's little bro Oh No pillages this [...]
