Producer/DJ Bonobo (Simon Green) is one of the pillars of the UK's pioneering electronic music label Ninja Tune (Blockhead, The Cinematic Orchestra, Daedelus), and is among most well-known practitioners of what many generally refer to as "downtempo." Though it's fair to say he's transcended that label with each and every album (20102s Black Sands is my personal favorite), his records have become increasingly dense sonic affairs, sampling sounds from more and more obscure instruments, and using wholly new sounds from traditional ones. In the ever-evolving electronic music scene—you don't need a list all those subgenres—Green has never followed [...]

It was billed as a night celebrating Erykah Badu's debut, Baduism , an album which defined and perfected '90s neo-soul. Nobody was "supposed" to show up due to tickets running a hefty $70 and almost no advance notice. Either way, expectations couldn't have been further off. Speaking volumes about the undeniable dedication of Ms. Badu's cult fanbase, over 1,500 concertgoers of all ages eagerly packed the Kool Haus. While Toronto visual artist Suritah Teresa Wignall exhibited her " Badu Effect " illustrations at the merch table, DJ [...]

OK, so this is probably the coolest music-related thing you'll see all day. Dutch producer BINK put together this killer video shot and edited by PIMB favorite Arts the Beatdoctor that serves as a tribute to Madlib . As you'll see in the clip, it features BINK building the entirety of Erykah Badu 's "The Healer", off New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) , piece by piece. It's truly stunning to watch it all come together and I'm hoping this is the first in a long line of videos like this. You can [...]

I didn't grow up with the luxury of having someone near and dear to me who could properly school me on hip-hop. Sure, my older brother, Tim, had great music taste and introduced me to stuff like The Chronic in 1993, which confused the hell out of my 8-year-old self. "What is chronic?" I can remember asking him, only to receive a shrugged-shoulders response and probably a lil' punch in the arm. But when I heard the music, the beats, the mostly indecipherable (to a kid, at least) lyrics, I was hooked. You could say that Dre introduced me to [...]

Heaven For The Sinner is taken from Bonobo 's forthcoming new album The North Borders , and featuring the supersouful vocals of Erykah Badu herself.
Bonobo can do no wrong in my eyes. “Heaven for the Sinner” is taken from his new album The North Borders. Bonobo and Erykah Badu on the same track is just ridiculous.

Just when we decided to delve into Bonobo's back catalogue in anticipation of the new album, The North Borders , we hear of a collaboration with one of our all-time favorites - Erykah Badu! This is an experimental track but the vocals are very fitting. There is no doubt that Erykah Badu has a queen-like status in the soul based music industry; but she is way more than the queen of neo-soul. She moved from the classical neo-soul to a much more raw and sometimes complex kind of voodoo-soul. This style became explicit when she came out with the 'New Amerykah' series; after an absence of five years she returned in 2008 with an album, produced by hip-hop producers, sounding more mysterious and firmly than ever. It is no coincidence that a few of the best producers worked with miss [...]
Bonobo drops another track from the forthcoming The North Borders, and this new cut features some soulful vocals from the none other than Erykah Badu. Listen to the track "Cirrus" here , and look for Borders on Ninja Tune at the start of April.

It is still February, which means we are going to continue to celebrate the life of J Dilla . To keep the tribute going, today we have compiled our list of favorite Jay Dee remixes. Throughout his career, the Detroit producer found himself taking on tracks from artists both well-known and considerably under the radar. Not only that, but he created remixes for acts from across the genresphere, including hip-hop, of course, but also trip-hop, R&B and jazz. Dilla's ability to re-imagine an arrangement was undeniable, and it's through this that we have him to thank for introducing us [...]
