Thanks to all-around good guy YANP for the tip on this one. I've probably mentioned eight times by now that the Ruby Suns are collaborating with Esau Mwamwaya on his upcoming LP. What I didn't know is that Esau also joined the band on their gloriously uplifting afro-beat cover of " Birthday ," confirming that everything the man touches indeed turns immediately to gold. It's the circle of life , bitches: mp3: The Ruby Suns :: Birthday feat. Esau Mwamwaya (Beatles cover) [...]

Has anyone else been getting sick on the constant electro drivel that the internet has been saturated with lately? Esau Mwamwaya is going to save the day. For those of you unfamiliar with Esau: Esau Mwamwaya was born in Mzuzu in Malawi, East Africa. He grew up in the capital, Lilongwe, where he played drums in various bands such as Masaka Band. In 1999 Esau Mwamwaya moved to London, [...]

The latest TEN4SEVEN from "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before ". After being quite resistant to everything Apple for many years I've embraced iTunes and also purchased an iPhone (Both of which I love). Carefully uploading the correct sleeve art for all The Rolling Stones UK singles and albums from the 60's and 70's was shear joy for the music nerd in me. It also makes keeping track of all the thousands of downloads, albums and singles sooo much easier... well [...]

M.I.A. GUESTS ON "RAIN DANCE" M.I.A. has been an enigmatic figure as of late. First off there's the mystery of her retirement - has she truly discontinued making music after her meteoric rise to the top with two blazingly original now classic LPs? Also, her single "Paper Planes" continues to climb the pop charts since it was used in the film Pineapple Express. Some of us of course realized the power of "Paper Planes" and Kala way back when it was released last [...]
Here's another one from Esau Mwamwaya + Radioclit 's upcoming collaboration, which is shaping up to be about the very best thing ever. As I've mentioned before , guests on the record include Santogold, Vampire Weekend, the Ruby Suns, Marina from Bonde Do Role, BLK JKS , and others. The latest leaked demo, " Rain Dance ," heavily features M.I.A. : Also, Esau + Radioclit rework -- and vastly improve on -- Vampire Weekend 's "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" (no offense, dudes) on the official [...]

First Africa. Discovered by Radioclit in a furniture or bike shop or something like that near their studio, Esau Mwamwaya (above with Radioclit ) is a Malawian native that just makes great music. He's already recorded his album, with guest apparences from M.I.A, Santogold, Bondo De Role and parts of Vampire Weekend... he is one of those artists that has massive crossover appeal, so get on him whilst he's hot. Esau Mwamwaya - Tengazako I got sent this track by the guys from Bipolar Badwise the other [...]
Real quick shout out to Suz and Rosh for commenting that the Jaguar Love song, "Bats Over The Pacific Ocean," sounded similar to "Lost In A Supermarket" by The Clash. I'm impressed that folks know their Clash and I'm happy that other people hear the same weird things as me. This week, we start out rocking, before a quick slow down with some folk sound, coming back out with modern flamenco into a nice dance beat with a little psycho-soul, some disco, and finishing off with afro-pop. [...]
Etienne and Johan AKA Radioclit recently produced the track "Get It Up" with Santogold and M.I.A, it was featured on the smashing Diplo/Santogold "Top Rankin" mixtape that set the internet on fire a couple of weeks ago. They decided to up the ante and brought in former Malawi (now East London) singer Esau Mwamwaya ie "The African Phil Collins" to grace the track with his presence. Look out for the release of his mixtape sometime in October and the release of his debut album shortly after that. Radioclit, Esau Mwamwaya, [...]

I named this playlist after a quote by William Carlos Williams , mostly because I was too lazy to come up with a ridiculous theme like my last two playlists. I've also always liked that the first name of William Carlos Williams is almost his last name too, you know? The zip file of the playlist includes a special bonus track by one of my favorite groups, like, EVER. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ -------- ------- UNIFICS [...]

It all started with the sale of a bike. After moving from East Africa to East London in 1999, Esau Mwamwaya ran a second-hand furniture store down the street from ghettopop duo Radioclit's studio. The story goes that one of the Radioclit guys bought a bike off of Esau and later invited him to one of their housewarming parties, where they "made friends" and the rest was history. Nearly a year later, Esau is primed to release his debut Radioclit-produced long player on a label TBA. Growing up in Malawi's capitol, Lilongwe, [...]

Esau + Ezra That Esau Mwamwaya record that we are unbelievably psyched about (and not just because it features collabs with Vampire Weekend, M.I.A., Santogold, the Ruby Suns, Marina Vello , and others) is finished . Mad Decent posted a video in which Esau + Radioclit document some of the making of the record, and they also threw in this: Esau's stirring reinterpretation of Architecture in Helsinki 's " Heart It Races ," taken from a mixtape that'll surface before [...]

Africa Unite! Check out some groups from the continent that are gaining some notoriety here in the states by fusing traditional African elements with Western rock, hip-hop and electronic styles. BLK JKS (South Africa) wowed crowds at SXSW with the variety of their sounds, moving back and forth between punk, pop and African chant-style music. Esau Mwamwaya (Malawi), described to me as "the African Phil Collins" brings a smoother vocal sound (check him out flowing over M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" below on "Tengazako"). And Seun Kuti (Nigeria) , the son of the late great [...]

This is about as cool as you can get...I love this guy. Theres not much way to listen to him other than his Myspace page, but its worth a toodle on over there. For me (I love indigenous African music), this is about as heavenly as you can get. And he's English. Listen as Africa meets the west: This is Esau singing the famous (or infamous) "Paper Planes"...Give it a listen. Srsly. mp3: "Tengazako" And this a demo from [...]
After two straight weeks of rain in Paris, the sun is finally out, and the music of Esau Mwamwaya , aka "The African Phil Collins" and the only man who runs a second hand furniture shop to make the cover of The Fader , is the perfect soundtrack. OK, so in the Interview with Radioclit they mentioned a bloke called Esau Mwamwaya, anyway the man has got some serious talent! I looked around the net, but other than his MySpace page there was no way to hear his music... something had to be done to get good quality tracks! I'm pretty sure Johan and Étienne are onto something great here, these productions are top class... and ORIGINAL! Esau Mwamwaya was born in Mzuzu in Malawi, East Africa. He grew up [...]
I was mostly unfamiliar with Esau Mwamwaya before last night, having only heard that recording of him singing over " Paper Planes " that's been floating around for a while. So big thanks, then, to the central booking kids for introducing me to this demo version of Mwamwaya's " Chalo ," which I've had on repeat all morning and afternoon. Radioclit -- who produced this amazing Afro-pop gem -- has dubbed Esau " the African Phil Collins ," because, among other reasons, apparently dude can drum. You can forget about the language [...]

Esau Mwamwaya - Tengazako I've been waiting to be able to post something by this guy, Esau Mwamwaya, for ages. Robot Mark and I both literally freaked out the very first time we heard his tracks back in the spring... See, I was trying to get Radioclit to come play my party, but when they were gonna be in town just wasn't going to work out with when I had a space for them... anyway, I was really bummed it didn't work, because I think they're pretty awesome. They produce original tracks and make some truly amazing remixes (see...

MIA's "Paper Planes" is the alternative tune of the summer for those who managed to avoid that Umbrella song so it's not surprising that there are different versions and remixes coming out at the moment. The first version (which Diplo used in that Pitchfork mix ) features additional rhymes from Bun B and Rich Boy and it's great but I'm not going to post it here because of the wonky time change in the version going around (if you want it get it @ J'ai la cassette à la maison ) . The Esau [...]
