Greetings from the land of the ill. I made the brutal mistake of rushing to kill the intense burning sensation which accompanies eating hot peppers with a cold glass of milk before remembering that my body cannot digest lactose. I feel like I'm on the brink of an terrible vomit-filled evening. Too bad, I was having a really good day. I hung out in Pasadena for a while, and then almost fell asleep in my notebook trying to write a short story. Have you ever tried to write something while half-conscious? I'll tell you right now, I started on page [...]

Our late summer doldrums are about to morph into crisp fall sharpness, but I feel like we've been a bit preoccupied with our various sponsored festivals and Olympic quality sweating to really focus on the newest and brightest tracks that may have been floating around the internet's seedy underbelly during these dog days. Let it not be said that our fine site is all wind and no heat! Here, for your Labor Day drive/train/boat/plane ride, or your mythic, eclectically soundtracked art-pop BBQ, we give you a heaping helpin' of Swankster approved tracks. Newly released or [...]

Image: Pork I have been one acquainted with the night. / I have walked out in rain - and back in rain. / I have outwalked the furthest city light. I have looked down the saddest city lane. / I have passed by the watchman on his beat / and dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain. I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet / when far away an interrupted cry / came over houses from another street, / but not to call me back or say goodbye; [...]
So 20JFG visited Berlin last long weekend, clenched fists and fractured bones, it was a harsh battle, one where we fought accompanied by savvy wizards, sorcerous mystics & bass music ladies against... A tasty little assortment today. ESG bring the old school spartan funk rarity. M.I.A. delivers a sweet Bollywood disco treat. Dr.Who Dat? delivers lush, blissful and summer-y jazz-hop. After Dark is a great compilation of new Italo stuff, including the Kraftwerk cover and the remix of the Indeep classic. ESG - Moody (A New Mood) M.I.A. - Jimmy Dr.Who Dat? - Braziliant Thought Glass Candy -

I've been meaning to do some posts on (relatively) older bands, so here's the first one.... Posting the new M.I.A. video reminded me of something. M.I.A. received some help on her first album from Justine Frischmann, the lead singer and songwriter from Elastica. Elastica stood out from the rest of the Britpop pack, mostly because they were imitation (or, in some cases, straight ripping off) British post-punk when others bands wanted to be the Beatles or the Stones. The band were an instant success. They were interviewed in NME and did a Peel [...]
God bless ESG - an awesome band and influential across so many genres. Probably one of my favorite musical scenes must be New York in the early eighties and these guys were pivotal. Sampled beyond belief (to the point where they released a live album called 'Sample Credits Don't Pay Our Bills') and produced by the reverb lovin' Martin Hannett, 'Moody (Spaced Out)' has got to be an all time classic. ESG - Moody (Spaced Out) [...]

The Jaxx love their samplers. Gary Numan - " M.E. " used in "Where's Your Head At?" Locksmith - " Far Beyond " used in ""Red Alert"" The Clash - " The Magnificent Dance " used in "Magnificent Romeo" The Selecter - " On My Radio " used in "Same Old Show" The Fatback Band - " Wicky Wacky " used in [...]

For some reason the "I Shot Ya (Remix)" by LL featuring everybody has been looping in my mind all week, so here's a few tracks that were sampled by Mr. Ladies Love and a waaay too young to be talking about her ill na na, Foxy Brown. Speaking of "I Shot Ya", what ever happened to the dope hip-hop posse cut? 1. Steve Arrington - " Nobody Can Be You " from LL Cool J - "Nobody Can Freak You" 2. Angela Winbush - " I'll Be Good " [...]
"Get off, bad Flamin' Groovies! I just played good Flamin' Groovies, not bad Flamin' Groovies! -- Tom, after the band's Chuck Berry rock 'n roll cover snuck on the air for a few seconds "Gonna see it soooooon, won't be loooong now. Gonna seeeeeeeee it ... soooon." -- Philly Boy Roy, breaking into a song about his impending viewing of Rocky Balboa "Well, some people debate whether he's human or not." -- Philly Boy Roy on the nature of his son [...]
My latest find over at TTL is ESG's Keep On Moving . The group known formerly as Emerald, Sapphire and Gold is a soul jazz outfit from South Bronx, New York. ESG is made up of four sisters; Deborah Scroggins (bass, vocals), Maria Scroggins (congas, vocals), Renee Scroggins (guitar, vocals), and Valerie Scroggins (drums). This is what Boomkat had to say about it: One listen to ESG (new or old) and it becomes clear just how indelible their sound has become in recent years - ranging from the breathless electrofunk of Peaches, through to the [...]
Funky Friday Fourpack It's time for another round of assorted, funky grooves to get your weekend off to a good start... ESG - Keep On Moving The Scroggin sisters of NYC have been playing since the late '70s and early '80s, and have just released a new album of typically spartan funk on the excellent Soul Jazz label. Leftfield goodness from some pioneers of the No Wave scene. Cut Copy -

* ESG : Purely Physical (6.5 mb) | Keep On Moving (4.0 mb) | Gimme A Blast (5.5 mb) From Keep On Moving : Soul Jazz Records : SJR CD138 I really hesitate to use the word Legendary when I describe ESG , because to me, legendary implies something historical, a qualifier that relies on things that already happened. But as this new release, almost 30 years on from their debut shows, they haven't [...]

We're continuing to slack around here at Shake Your Fist and have invited yet another guest blogger to do our work for us. But with guests this good, how can you possibly object? Jeannette Ordas is the talent behind the food blog Everybody Likes Sandwiches (which isn't, just to be clear, exclusively about sandwich making). I love Everybody Likes Sandwiches for lots of reasons, but if I had to pick three I'd say, 1) fabulous recipes, 2) writing [...]

E.S.G. is one of those bands that only started getting any sort of recognition after the group's breakup. Since I wasn't alive when they were around back in the late 70s and early 80s, I obviously cannot say how popular they were, but I get the impression that they weren't getting asked to sign to a major label. But then along came the Liars who sampled one of their songs for a piece of theirs (yeah -- I forgot the name ... ), and then James Murphy started talking about them a lot, and then they were big big. [...]
