Back in early April, All Our Noise kicked off the spring season with a freshly rebranded and redesigned site, and we invited all of our friends to come out and celebrate the event. Montserrat House was gracious enough to host our Volume 3 party on April 21, and a few of our favorite bands provided the entertainment. The Plums, Buildings and Sun Wolf all played excellent sets, and an extra special thanks to everyone who came out and made this an amazing evening. Check out the above video for a quick recap of the night's [...]
The U Street Corridor is known for the variety of bars and clubs lining this busy stretch of the city. And over the last decade, one of the most consistent forces behind the expansion of this neighborhood and some of its more interesting venues has been Eric Hilton. With restaraunts and bars like Marvin, Gibson, Blackbyrd, and American Ice Company under his belt, Hilton has shown no signs of slowing down his efforts at helping to reshape the neighborhood. One of the newest locations he's had a hand in, and probably the most understated, is Montserrat House . [...]
In their first collaboration, AM and Shawn Lee's Celestial Electric exudes just the right amount of swagger and soul to have us reminisce the days of yore.
MP3: "Thursday Knight Kinda Swing" (Premiered on OkayAfrica) Imagine stepping into a bumping dance party at the peak of the night and feeling the movement of the dancers around you; take a psychedelic walk through the Malian desert with a boom box, or meditate on some modern dub as the night winds down. Afrolicious brings musical treats for you to feed your mind, body and soul which mixes a

Starts off slow and you think that they are working up to something special. The beats kick in on the second track 'Still A Soldier' and you are starting to get warm, maybe a bit of a semi or some moistness is starting to develop in the nether regions? Then as quick as a flash the track is gone and it's on to another slow starting hip hop joint featuring Azeem called 'The Shining'. Disappointed massively with that one. Sorry but I am calling this one down the middle despite my mega love of AA. I was still nodding my [...]

★★★☆☆ Argentinean Federico Aubele paints a rather glum picture of his time in the German capital, sending a postcard beset by drizzle and offering a weak smile that listeners will find unconvincing with regard to the destination's merits. Structured/hampered by Aubele's strict yet contradictory inventory, Latin acoustic strums and snatches of Gallic accordion feel for a continental pensiveness against tear-stained sceneries and dub-issued basses. Topped off with sleazily hushed vocals, far from exploiting melancholia, the delivery sounds like he's planning Gainsbourg-like fantasies, Aubele's walks through damp air, hands dug deep in pockets and collar [...]

Something from Thievery Corporation's Eighteenth Street Lounge label is always quite exciting. Last time, I was sadly disappointed by Kabanjak (who took it with remarkably good grace). This time it's Ancient Astronauts, which is a duo including Kabanjak. Oh dear. Thankfully, this is a cracking downtempo tune with huge fat hip hop beats and some great parping brass. Anyone who rates Thievery or loved Kruder & Dorfmeister shoud download this now. Bio: The Ancient Astronauts are Kabanjak and Dogu, a bombastic production and DJ duo hailing from Cologne, Germany. The phenomenon of "ancient astronauts," a [...]

Argentinean dub-bolero master, Federico Aubele , is set to release his fourth LP via ESL Records . The new album was inspired by the heavy Berlin electronic scene as Aubele burrowed himself in the album making. Look for "Berlin 133 to hit the streets April 4th. Look for Natalia Clavier, Ka, Mauro Refosco and Jesse Harris as collaborators on the forthcoming release. Federico Aubele-Corazon [mp3]

I know, sounds like a '98 speed garage duo, but make no mistake, Knight Riderz are very 2011. We met this dude DJ Degree in Canada once, had fun, great dude, kept in touch and now he hits us with this project. Gotta love Canada every day more and more. "Canada based duo known as Knight Riderz are producing lazer bass bombs in a 12 dimensional world of twisted low frequency induced hip-hop." They got a new ep out called 'Mind Riddims ( preview here ), that's currently number [...]

After a long hiatus, lo fi funk and lounge groovers Thunderball are back with a new album "12 Mile High" on ESL in November. The lay off, which included time as Fort Knox Five has allowed them to take their trademark sound and add further elements of production and instrumentation to develop the groove they are so well know for. Expect sitars, tight brass, funk guitars and wagons of soul. Stand out tracks include soul and funk guitar number "I C Colors", "Dub Science" with its blissed out groove and the tight [...]

Not only do I have a cold, and that invincible drowsiness which comes with it, but being self fucking employed I can't even have a bloody skive! God dammit! I feel like Kevin the Teenager from the Fast Show, it's just so unfaaaaair! Anyhow, to explain myself, yes that really is an armoured dinosaur up there at the top of the page. I did a Google image search for 'heavy cold' and apart from a bewildering array of machetes, that image featured quite prominently. And it's an armoured fucking dinosaur for goodness' sake! More such mental (and rather [...]
Nowadays, labels get a bad wrap for clinging so tightly to their music, and understandably so. But, the folks in charge at Ubiquity, Fania , Plug Research , ESL , Now Again , Tru Thoughts and Bastard Jazz have all pitched in tracks for Label Love 001 . It features music from folks like Quadron, Shafiq Husayn, Bilal, Quantic, Dimlite and other international acts. Very jazzy. Check out their websites and browse through their artist [...]

Adrian Quesada and Martin Perna, respective band-leaders of famed ensembles Grupo Fantasma and Antibalas , once again unite under the Ocote Soul Sounds banner for their new full length album, Coconut Rock, released on ESL Music on June 23rd. After two stellar albums, this time around Coconut Rock finds the duo loosened up, slipping effortlessly into their trademark psychedelic afro-latin funk groove. From the descarga rhythms of album lead-off The Revolt of the Cockroach People to the cumbia bounce of Tu Fin, Mi Comienzo to the easy guitar soundscapes of Vendendo Saude e [...]

This was the standout track of the album on first listen. Good thing it got the singles treatment, even when it is meant for Australia and New Zealand alone. This will probably work it's way up to be a single favorite. It sure is better than "Poker Face" and is very sing-along and summer-ready.

I haven't done a mix in a while, so here's seven songs that you will hopefully enjoy. And if you don't, just remember that the blog's free, and that you can e-mail me suggestions at eitheror.hugh(at)gmail(dot)com . I sometimes take ages to get around to them, but sometimes... not ages, and you may just get lucky, at least if you define "lucky" as "Hugh read my e-mail." I hope you do not use such a definition, but anyway, enjoy the songs. Aaron Beaumont - Julia - (MP3, 4.1 MB) This [...]

The first time I heard e.s.l. play was at the now-defunct Marine Club in Vancouver a few years ago. A small room with an even smaller stage, it was an intimate setting for what turned out to be a raucous and vibrant performance. As Marta Jaciubek-McKeever (piano and vocals), Cris Derksen (cello) and Joy Mullen (drums) took the stage (Diona Davies and her violin would join e.s.l. a few months later), the crowd gravitated to the front, leaning in close, all ears. e.s.l.'s mix of carefully selected covers and heartrending originals impressed me then, and my respect for these talented [...]
