The 11th annual Austin City Limits Music Festival runs October 12-14th at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. The lineup boasts headliners Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White, The Black Keys, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and Florence and the Machine. Other notables include Iggy and the Stooges, The Avett Brothers, The Roots, The Shins, Weezer, M83, Goyte, The Afghan Whigs, Crystal Castles, Andrew Bird, M. Ward, Alabama Shakes, and Childish Gambino. Three-day and single-day passes will be available this spring via the festival's website .

The two most recent albums by these jazz artists, Esperanza Spalding's Radio Music Society and Norah Jones' Little Broken Hearts , go in different (and good) directions. Jazz has done so much to resist popularity since the end of the big band era: the squirrel-chase sound of bebop, the steely architecture of Coltrane, the raw honk and squeal of free jazz, the over-academic approach of neo-conservatives. On each successive occasion, the venues get larger, the expectations are higher, and the performances are less exciting. My first opportunity to see Spalding came in 2002.
