These aren’t reviews, these are unedited testimonies and opinions about why we love what we love. Can we get a witness?] Words by Ricky Album: Cannibal Sea Artist: The Essex Green Released: April 2, 2006 Label: Merge [...]
The gulf has been plagued by some tragedies in the recent past. First Katrina and now the biggest oil spill in history. Yikes. Now that I think about it, I haven’t heard of very many bands coming out of the area either. I don’t blame them; it must be tough to make music when you have other things on your mind. Then again, there are bands like Youth Sounds that use it as a strength.
Today's play list is compiled of male singers only (except me then). It contains a few of my fave bands like Kashmir, Mew and Nick Drake! Perfect for a Saturday afternoon!

On June 6, 2006, FensePost went live. Since its inception, I've written more than 1,000 album reviews and countless features, track reviews, live reviews, and video reviews. My collection has grown exponentially. I have a room in my house devoted entirely to records. CDs go in the living room and I'm out of shelving space. To say FensePost has become a big part of my life would be an understatement. It's as much a second job as it is a hobby. Above photo of [...]

The summer of 2003 was a hot one in eastern Washington, and my concrete bunker of an apartment contained the heat like no other. Granted, the above image wasn't shot by yours truly until 2004, but it sure seemed hot enough to ignite even the least combustible of items. I wrapped up my undergraduate that December, which was cold as Antarctica, and upon that milestone I moved to Seattle. It was a good year for the Northwest; many of my favorite albums came from Seattle labels like Sub Pop and Barsuk. As for the list, I've [...]

Photography by Luis Cardia Our unofficial Mixtape Week continues unabated!!! This time, mixologist & beloved Society member Lloyd Ffafnir brings his latest and greatest mixtape to our ears. The theme? Spring. Seems rather appropriate, though the weather can't seem to figure out what IT wants to be (stoopid mother nature, but then again, today IS gorgeous), cold, hot, warm, rain, sun, wheeeee! But by the will of the mixtape (by the power of Greyskull), we will force upon mother earth the sun & shine [...]

Jeremy from Fingertips joins us every Friday as he scours the betterPropaganda archives, highlighting gems buried a few years back in our database. This week we bring you "Don't Know Why (You Stay)" from The Essex Green . Previous songs I'd heard from The Essex Green had their charms somewhat blanketed by the earnest groovy-'60s vibe laid on with such love and attention that it all grew a bit thick--everything from specific guitar sounds to the character of background harmonies and the tone of flute flourishes seemed almost too studied, or [...]
‘Everything is Green’ is about as pastoral and soothing as a song can get. It comes from Brooklyn outfit the Essex Green who’ve done the rounds on several labels of note (Elephant 6, Merge and Kindercore). It’s easy to see the attraction as the groups airy harmonies really are a thing of beauty. This song was the title track from their 1999 debut and is marked by the beautiful soft rolling

Subtle stars mark week #46 of 2008. Outside of Sweden's Love Is All , the rest of our artists this week have toned things down. Philadelphia's own Denison Witmer comes out with their folk/acoustic sounds with Carry The Weight . They are currently touring the East Coast at the moment. DW, PA loves ya but as your MySpace fans keep saying, Austin and the Midwest need some of that love. Really catching our attention this week are Longwave and The Postmarks . [...]

Well the web is all giddy with rumors that online internet radio giant Pandora may be forced to turn out all the lights and go home. The service has been free and I've taken advantage of the wonderful music it has bestowed upon me many a time. But to finally think about it's mortality, and to think that it won't last forever? AGH! The Copyright Royalty Board last year decided that the fee to play a music recording on Web radio should step up from 8/100 of a cent per song per listener in [...]

Just kiddng about T.I. I can't wait for the Paper Trail , but I've got to make this one quick, as I've got about 1400 pages of Census data and Working Poor studies to sort through and make a powerpoint out of tonight, so if you're religious, put in a prayer for me . Below are a few tracks I couldn't wait to post today, and just a warning, they are pretty ecclectic. 1. T.I. - What Up (If I could pick only one song to listen to this week, [...]

The Essex Green - "Don't Know Why (You Stay)" .Cars drink gasoline. Old men drink gin. Turntables drink electricity. Young men drink beer. Trees drink sunlight, drink rain. We drink songs. We drink like fishes. (Fishes drink saltwater.) On a hot day I'll drink a hundred songs. On a lonely day I'll drink myself sick. And the thing with songs, the thing that makes them better than booze, hooch, moonshine, is that you can drink the same song a hundred times & get just as drunk with every listen. You can listen to the same song a thousand times and [...]
MP3: The Essex Green - the Late Great Cassiopia So there's been a lot of hemming and hawing about the merit of bands selling their songs to commercials. You've heard all the arguments: Does it cheapen the original song? Are the artists shills? Well save all the vitriol from both sides ...

In celebration of the return of the greatest thing to happen to the serial drama since, well, the serial drama. Tonight (ABC - 8/7C) the writer's strike, a lack of award shows, and TV's general lacklusterness will all be washed away when JJ Abrams bathes us in his directorial beauty. Who will be rescued? Will anyone be rescued? Who was in the casket? Where are Jack & Kate in that flash back/flash forward? Who is the "he" Kate was referring to? God, the questions! [mp3] Elliott Smith - [...]
