Originally featured on the 1976 Kudo release Capricorn Princess, 'All The Way Down' is low-down slice of mid seventies bluesy funk which first came under the LW scalpel four years ago and has since seen a very limited release on Kojak Giant Sounds (which now exchanges hands for silly money on Discogs). I recently revisited the edit and remastered it using a bunch of great analog outboard I've since acquired through careless gear lust! This will only be available in download format for a short space of time so grab it whilst you can. Enjoy! x [...]

We reach a decade of Covered With Soul mixes with interpretations of songs better known in versions by the Mamas and the Papas, Rolling Stones, Randy Newman, The Righteous Brothers, Brook Benton, Ben E King (or Shirley Bassey), Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick, The Shirelles, Frankie Laine, Frankie Valli, Jimmy Cliff, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bob Dylan, Chicken Shack (or the late Etta James), Kris Kristofferson, Gil Scott-Heron, Carpenters, Doobie Brothers, Bread and Abba. Even if you are a casual observer of soul music, you will know at least one voice here among the lesser known singers: Dorothy [...]

I've said it before: no other series on this blog is as much fun to put together than the Covered With Soul compilations. And I've yet a few mixes in store. There are have been a couple of pretty radical reworkings of songs; Maxine Weldon 's interpretation of George Gershwin's I'll Build A Stairway To Paradise (best known, perhaps, as Georges Guetary's showstopper in the An American In Paris musical) is one of them. On the other hand, if the version of Spirit In The Sky by The Stovall Sisters has [...]
Esther Phillips is one of the lesser-known soul artists. She started her career singing soul and jazz standards, but here she is doing some disco, which she became a staple of towards the end of her career. She is an artist's-artist. So much so that Aretha Franklin offered her 1973 Grammy win to Esther who was also nominated. She was not very well-understood in the industry and her voice was so unique that, at times, her record company did not know how to package or sell it. As you can tell, nobody is quite like Esther Phillips vocally. Unfortunately, Esther is no [...]

This is Volume 8 of Covered With Soul , and there is no end in sight (unless a lack of comments suggests there should be). Check out the re-interpretation of Wichita Lineman, Be My Baby, Won't Get Fooled Again, Fever, Sunshine Superman and Rainy Day Women #12 & 35. Perhaps the most radically reworked cover here is David Porter's take on that old crooners' favourite All The Way. It's not how Sinatra sang it (he certainly had no harp in his version). But my favourite cover here might be Esther Phillips ' of Gilbert O'Sullivan Along [...]

I must confess that I find it hard to mourn the death of Amy Winehouse. Don't think of me as a man possessed of a callous heart. Of course the death of a young, talented woman is a cause for sadness. But Ms Winehouse did not die in a tragic accident, as Otis Redding did, nor did a dread disease claim her, as it did Minnie Riperton. Amy Winehouse was a victim of her own excess; she lived a self-destructive lifestyle which first wounded her talent and then (as it appears) ended her life. My empathy is directed at her [...]

In the 6 th volume of soul covers, we have the great Grady Tate's interpretation of the Theme of M*A*S*H and versions of songs previously recorded by Gil Scott-Heron, Bob Dylan, Big Brother & the Holding Company, Elvis Presley, James Taylor, Righteous Brothers, Tammy Wynette, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Joe South, Rolling Stones, Credence Clearwater Revival, James Brown, Cream , Peggy Lee, The Beatles, The Flamingos, Julie Andrews, Nat 'King' Cole, Billy Joel and Cat Stevens. Quite a mixed bag. This mix features a fair number of country songs remade as soul songs, showing how close the two [...]

Ron Carter It's coming down to the wire, but for those of you still looking for that last grand-daddy of gifts for that special music loving someone in your life, here's a suggestion: CTI Records: The Cool Revolution . I've been talking about CTI records for a few months now (back here and here ) and there recent explosion of re-issues and other goodies, and this 4 disc set is the the ultimate topper of them all. Containing thirty nine songs [...]

* Smoke Whisper by David Choe What's good, family? Hope that all the people who make my world go 'round have been fat and happy since last we met... All apologies (word to the homie Kurt Cobain )~ I haven't had much time or inclination to kick around verbs and nouns these past few weeks. Even so, I thought it necessary to spread some love by way of these infectious grooves~ several joints you might hear rattling the windows at the ill-reputed house of Scholar . [...]

Well my lovelies, further investigations into, & thoughts about, shifting this blog away from the grasp of our benevolent & wise google, have led me to the conclusion that there's no simple way to just get 'everything' as-is shuffled over somewhere else. So (snipping the reasons - see comments) I think wordpress is the way to go, & at some future point you'll be automatically directed over to howmarvellous.com , which is already up n running, but awaiting my tender & lavish attention as regards colour, layout & the swanny pic. **dull tech alert** the main thing [...]

We worshipped at the spangled feet of pagan idols. Like Frankie, a knockout who worked the bulletproof window at an after hours coke cop-spot on Avenue B. Frankie had a collection of New York Dolls she had made out of Barbies with red, black and blond wigs, glittered boots, splash-painted sequin Sgt. Pepper coats, scale size cardboard guitars, drumsticks and a microphone stand with bluebird feathers. She set them up every night on the counter behind the glass where we stuck in our grimy twenties hoping for an interested glance from Sweet Frankie. [...]
Here we are again with several takes of an old song - and full lyrics too, for one in particular of my legion readers. Today's tune is Alone Again (Naturally), a biggedy hit in 1972 for Gilbert O'Sullivan, who also wrote it. What I like, is the contrast of genuinely sad lyrics, against quite a jaunty, piano-pop song backing; but it's also the thing that makes me yearn for a version with more obvious feeling, one that really explores the emotions behind those lines about suicide, loss, & crashing disappointment. Perhaps bizarrely, I can imagine William Shatner doing [...]

Esther Phillips, Performance (Kudu 1974) Esther Phillips might not come across as freaky deaky as a Betty Davis but she hits a similar vibe sometimes, especially on the Eugene McDaniels cover "Disposable Society." Tight record. Esther Phillips - "Disposable Society" Esther Phillips - "I Feel the Same"

Esther Phillips - What a Diff'rence a Day Makes label: Omega year: 1975 side a: What a Diff'rence a Day Makes side b: Turn around, Look at Me I thought I was buying a nice little easy listening tune when I handed the sales guy my three euros in exchange for this here slab of wax, but when I listened to it at home I found it's a extremely annoying disco version of Dinah Washington 's classic. Which, by the way, is [...]

'Sup, soul kids? I've recently enjoyed several days of doing absolutely nothing meaningful or productive, unless you count shopping for a fly pair of sunglasses like the ones pictured above. However, much to my hungover dismay, the time has finally come to defy inertia and roll my unambitious ass off the comfy couch... Not surprisingly then, there's no particular theme or cohesiveness happening with today's musical selections. That sort of thing would have required forethought and organization, which are alien concepts to a brain that's recently enjoyed a brief vacation from highly evolved mental processes of [...]
