Ethan Lipton is a playwright and a songwriter. So it makes perfect sense for his new album to be the soundtrack to his play. Ethan and his orchestra write a musical/concept album about a man loosing his job. Of course, it is about more than just that. But on the surface it is about a man who no longer has a "place to go" every day. The album works as a concept, as a whole but it also has some great individual songs that can stand along. Stylistically, Ethan Lipton + His Orchestra play [...]
Ethan Lipton may not be Randy Newman, but he’s on the right wavelength. United States - Music - Arts - Ethan Lipton - Randy Newman
“I think sweet, grumpy little New York could use a hometown band, and if there’s anything we’re trying to become, it’s that.” — Ethan Lipton New York - New York City - Musical ensemble - United States - Arts and Entertainment

On March 7th, rumors spread that The National were announcing a last minute addition of two shows at Brooklyn's Bell House, a tiny venue with a capacity of 350 in the concert hall for Thursday March 11th and Friday March 12th. As you would imagine once the rumors were confirmed true, tickets sold out in ten minutes for both nights. The intimacy of the small venues was particularly exciting knowing that the band has already sold out Radio City Music Hall for their performance next month. Ethan Lipton 's band [...]

Chris, AKA CD, is this blog's most revered commenter. Also, mostly its only commenter (not counting the splogs and onepost commenters who need a file fixed). Until last week, I didn't know his last name, or even his first name, but he's good people. Today, he wants to talk to you about Ethan Lipton 's Waitsian tune "Gift Basket." Let's review the reasons to enjoy the holidays, shall we? There's the whole good will on earth towards one's fellow man, fresh snowfalls, twinkly lights, egg nog , and, if [...]

I nearly did The Top 2007 Songs From 2007 (like this insane post from last year ). I decided to focus on 27 instead (2007 minus the zeroes). These are the songs I think are the most well-written , well-performed , well-done and well-worth a listen. 27. The National ~ Ada There is a great chance, if The Duchess and I ever have a baby girl, she will be named Ada. 26. Great Lake Swimmers ~ I Became Awake I always [...]

" Winter is coming..." "...gotta find me a bear " "...to lay down with." Ethan Lipton ~ Winter

Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra - Old People Don't Whisper With its understated, playful use of the conventions of swing music, “Old People Don’t Whisper” is a song that pokes fun at itself with undeniably charming results. The line “we’ll just talk louder year after year” is followed by an articulation of the bass and brass section that edges on perfection. Just wait until you catch your reflection in the mirror, wielding an ear trumpet and a smile. Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra - Bossy Man Buy [...]

Here are some musicians that have come across my radar recently: The Commonwealth hails from Louisville, KY and their first album He Thinks He Scares Us is a compilation of what's been called an "avant-garde tunes with a unique blend of instruments." The Commonwealth was featured in last year's installment of Burn To Shine, a documentary by former Fugazi member Brenden Canty and film director Christopher Green. Bloody Genes Honestly, I tried looking for an official website, but there are many bands out there called The Commonwealth ranging [...]
When the Moon Hits Your Eye Like A Big Pizza Pie That's The Internets by Alex Carnevale We are late to what oldtimers are terming the Julia Allison experience . Some people call her a representative of the Naked Generation , we just love couples that post their break-up e-mails online. I would post all of mine were it socially acceptable. Sure, there are imitators , but I mean, come on, this shit is awesome. [...]

So Ethan Lipton has got to be the best comedic artist ever! Suck on that Weird Al Yankovich! Girl From The Renaissance Faire includes such meaningful statements as "Her bosom was heathen" and "Her hair smelled like steak"! I also love the old school pan flutes (or some other sort of wooden instrument). The only thing I don't like is how the song ends; It sort of fizzles out, but not in a good way. Ethan Lipton + his Orchestra play some crazy whack music. We’re talking funny and poignant and sassy. Melodic and well-orchestrated. Clever and fully enjoyable. It’s jazzy, bluesy, folky, did I mention funny? I could have included him in my Vin Scelsa post, as Vin has been playing the snot out of “Renaissance Fair” for a few months now. The album was produced by Huck Bennert who has worked with Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriguez. The sound of the recording complements the material. Girl From The Renaissance Faire [...]
