I've discussed Laura Gibson before , but the need keeps coming back to revisit her work. Gibson is a powerhouse - evolving and revolving with each passing moment. And so it is no surprise that her collaboration with fellow Portland resident Ethan Rose represents another step forward. The Bridge Carols website describes it like this: Bridge Carols, the new project from Portland, OR friends Laura Gibson and Ethan Rose, began as a conversation of mutual appreciation and curiosity — a shared desire to challenge old ways of working. [...]
Bridge Carols is a new collaboration between Portland, Oregon folk singer, Laura Gibson , and soundscaper, Ethan Rose . Laura Gibson's 2009 release, Beast of Seasons, drew some very favourable reviews but this new venture takes her into less charted territory. Gibson's voice is used almost exclusively as an instrument as it interweaves with Rose's archaic, tinkling or quietly resonant arrangements. The result is a quite exquisite but ultimately ephemeral collection of lyric fragments, which float dreamily over dismembered ambient instrumentals. The album cover depicts the two protagonists waist high in grass, framed [...]
Bridge Carols, the new project from Portland, OR friends Laura Gibson and Ethan Rose, began as a conversation of mutual appreciation and curiosity - a shared desire to challenge old ways of working. We were fortunate enough to chat with Laura about this new and very unique album and project with her good friend Ethan. Check out the Q & A below! Q & A with Laura Gibson: Before we talk about your project with Ethan Rose we would just [...]
As I see the written words "Best of 2009," I have a gut reaction to dismiss the very idea as an oxymoron. Like when someone who would rather not be awake responds with "What's good about it?" when greeted by "Good morning." As writer Marc Kevin Hall recently observed , 2009 can be summed up by one word: loss. This was certainly true for me; I lost my job to the recession, and, worse, a longtime friend to death. The music community also suffered losses: Michael Jackson, Jeff Hanson, Vic Chestnutt to name a few. So far, [...]
If you had asked me four years ago whether or not the future of my silly little blog mattered to me, I would have laughed in your face and called you a "fag" or "pussy." I was interested enough in the prospect of sharing my ideas to sign up for a Blogger.com account, but beyond that I pretty much figured it would only keep my attention for a month or two. Like every other project I'd started in my life, a website was something intended to kill a few hours between classes, or provide me a hobby other than popping [...]
Portland musicians Laura Gibson and Ethan Rose have combined forces for 2010. This collaboration honors their roots and creates a beautiful new level of ethereal folk music, following in the footsteps of Gibson's breathtaking Beasts of Seasons in 2009. Bridge Carols comes out on February 9th, but you can stream the album in its entirety on the website and download "Younger" right here and now (below). Laura Gibson is scheduled to play Noise Pop 2010 [...]

"Jane, ever since I met you I've noticed things I never noticed before: Birds ... singing! Dew, glistening on a newly formed leaf! Stoplights ... " That's a passage from Naked Gun , a flick I've seen upwards of three-dozen times. This quote represents Leslie Nielson's character Frank Drebbin's attempt to win back his lady. He wants her back, see, because she's influenced his life so much he can't imagine going on without her. I feel this way about my wife, but for [...]

Let me just say, first off, that I love-love-love 3-inch CDs . They're cool, they're cult and they're collectible. In fact they're pretty much the only CD-related medium -- besides CD-Rs -- that's fun anymore. Putting out a 3-inch CD by the likes of a minimalist drone artist, on the surface, doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The medium in itself limits the length of the recording, and considering that NYC artist Stephen Spera [...]

By nature, ambient music's not that intrusive, and it shouldn't be. Soft background atmospherics are where the music has been relegated, but this shouldn't stop it from being experimental, interesting, or complex. Enter Ethan Rose: An ambient music artist out of Portland. Ethan's been at this "furniture music" thing for about five releases now, and his latest LP is Oaks . The album is named after a local skating rink Ethan's been visiting over the past year, but he hasn't been spending his time there on wheels. Instead, he's on the rink's vintage Wurlitzer organ. Playing it [...]

Was it in 6th grade the last time I had roller skates on? Something like that. Tonight I went to this fabulous throw-back amusement park called Oaks Park and roller skated for several hours with a pack of scenesters. Though my legs may be sore tomorrow, tonight I feel like the bell of the Starlight Express. After a few sketchy turns around the vast wooden floor, I was able to skate more or less as well as I did in 6th grade (undistinguished) and I did not fall down. Still can't skate backwards. [...]
Growing up in Portland, there were two skating rinks I would go to. Usually it the one near Beaverton Mall. And although I wasn't the best skater, I loved going because rollerskating is one of the purest ways to experience recorded music (aside from vinyl on oversized headphones, late, late at night). One Saturday, the girl I'd had an unconfessed crush on for two years was at the rink, flanked by her two girlfriends, as my parents dropped my friend and I off. They were popular and we weren't, so social order dictated that every time I [...]
