Guelph - "That's a pretty good way to start off a folk festival." So said Old Man Luedecke after hearing a song by Lowlands , his partners in the "That Lucky Old Sun" workshop on the Lake Stage. Of course the Hillside Festival hasn't really been a folk festival for some time now, but it has held on to the general folky, hippie-ish vibe and has continued to book folk performers even as some of the festival's emphasis has shifted towards hot new indie rock acts. The lineup for the festival was generally pretty [...]

Filed under: Around the World Before taking Niger Saharan trance music back around the world on a current tour, the members of the band Etran Finatawa wanted to do another tour, taking its music and culture to a new audience: the children of Niger. "It's a project that we have been planning for a couple of years," says band manager Sandra van Edig . "We have done many workshops abroad, school workshops in Europe and England and the US. There's always that question when you're traveling [...]

Etran Finatawa - Jama'aare Un blues man ar putea sta zile intregi cantand.

Etran Finatawa's Desert Crossroads has provided subtly wonderful background music for me these past few weeks, so it was a pleasant surprise to go to Pitchfork last week and read their edifying and well-written review of the record. I'd rehash for you but I honestly think you're better off heading there to learn about this collaboration between members of the Wodaabe and Tuareg tribes. Yes, it will probably help buy Ryan Schreiber yet another ivory back-scratcher but if you have any interest in mysterious, sand-swept Sahara tribal rhythms, you're better off [...]
