All geared up for the sweet seventeen edition of Wild Weekend? Good. The ghost in the iPod has made its choices, and diversity´s the word once again. Some reggae, some jazz, a weird cover and a lovely tribute. Plus a very recent track from a band called Great Divide and an oldie from the Captain himself. "What's the meaning of this? Poor Harry, I guess..." Been awhile since we enjoyed any Don Van Vliet magic around here, so I´m glad the lovely Harry Irene - a duo that lived in [...]
Happy Easter, Easter People. I'm a Jew but that did not stop me from partaking in some celebratory grillin' and chillin' tonight. I had a hot dog, a cheeseburger, and s'mores made with Peeps. I found the "golden egg" during our Easter egg hunt (curated by Ken and Kt), which contained a condom and some lube! I watched the Red Sox beat the Yankees, and I was temporarily joyous, until I realized that the Mets open their season tomorrow. Upon realizing this I suddenly felt very, very sad. Is it pathetic that I'm hoping the team loses their first ten [...]

Dennis Gonzalez of Yells At Eels put together this week's winner. This was a controversial winner, by the way. Music editor Pete Freedman much preferred Nevada Hill's poster for the same event, saying... Continue reading "Poster Of The Week: Eugene Chadbourne" >
You never know with Eugene Chadbourne. You just never know. One minute he'll be playing some extraordinary piece of avant-garde banjo experimentation, the next he'll be doing cover versions of popular songs, the next he'll be yammering in your ears like a derelict alcoholic on helium. Often it'll all be in the same song. For his 1990 album Country Music in the World of Islam Volume XV he was joined by Elliot Sharp and the Sun City Girls. One of the highlights is this charming bit of fluff, in which Eugene bemoans [...]

The viola, sometimes called the violet, possesses the unusual capacity to mask it's scent. It releases a ketone component known as ionone which desensitizes nasal receptors, effectively making it nose-invisible. The little flower shares its name with a stringed instrument of the same name, namely the viola, an instrument that many wish would also learn to mask its odor. The stringed viola is, sadly, oft scorned and ridiculed; If Satan plays the violin, it is presumably some short, ugly and mentally challenged step-demon who plays the viola. Orchestra members routinely swap occasionally slightly [...]

A recent list compiled by researchers at Johns Hopkins lists the top ten worst human behaviors. Let's see how many I'm guilty of... 1. Discrimination in an employment situation: I am guilty of this, but in a kind-of unintentional way. Once I was working at the golf range when former New York Giants running back Otis "O.J." Anderson marched in and asked for -- actually he demanded -- two buckets of balls. When I told him that would cost twenty dollars, he said, "No, I don't think you heard me. I said I'd take two extra-large [...]

[ 7 MP3 files in this post, of which two are nearly identical. ] They say that history repeats itself, but it is still quite surprising when it does so as literally as it did in 2003. The US under George Bush attacked Iraq under Saddam Hussein, exactly as it had happened 12 years earlier in 1991. They also say that copying degrades quality, so it may come as no surprise that the second attempt turned out a bit more disastrous than the first. Anyway, many people weren't even happy with the first George [...]
