So, we've come to the second last installment of my Top 40 Albums of 2008. Before plunging into the fray once more, I will attempt to remind you of what music the summer of 2008 brought with it. July kicked off with releases by Beck, The Black Ghosts, Ratatat, The Hold Steady, and an excellent Kitsune remix album by Digitalism. The month ended with albums from post-punk veterans Wire, CSS, Bodies of Water, Little Ones, Friendly Fires, The Black Kids, and The Great Northwest. Of course there was also a rather disappointing new album from Primal Scream and the debut [...]

Une semaine haute en couleur, je ne vous ai pas trop donné de nouvelles, pour me rattraper je vous ai concocté un aperçu mélodique de ces derniers jours... une dédicace pour un concert renversant. norman palm -girls just wanna have fun (cyndi lauper)- miss li -give it to me- miss li -why don't you love me- et la suite parle d'elle même. eugene mcguinness -nightshift- the acorn -flood pt.1- the [...]

Eugene McGuinness 'Eugene McGuinness' (Domino) In all honesty, I was a tad disappointed with this. Long before Shout And Twist launched itself upon the interweb with a post singing the praises of Eugene McGuinness Super Talent, I'd been anticipating this very album. Last year's EP 'The Early Learnings...' was one of 2007's finest fabrications, pretty much defining the sweet spirit of Xmas by way of sumptuous chimes and majestical wonders of a city I know all too well. The album though, 'Eugene McGuinness', doesn't quite define winter 08. Yeah, said-sumptuous chimes [...]
in berlin we love radio....we just love it... when you watch German TV, it's like seeing grass grow...so uninspiring, so bad.... DJ Diana Frankovic keeps banging out one great program after the other! while too many radio DJs think too local in this city and hardly use their imagination, she puts together a great selection of tracks. Our opinion is: forget about the computer generated playlists - anyone can load up a bunch of mp3s, call it internet radio station..... important is the personality which drives a [...]

Photo by preamble Who'd win in a fight between a tiger and a cockatoo? It's the type of conversation you might hear down the pub after a few too many beers. However, this and many more questions are answered in technicolour style by Kevin Barnes and Of Montreal at Koko. The evening began in contrasting drab fashion, with Eugene McGuinness twanging away on Koko's grandiose stage. I was expecting more given the hype, but the set seemed to consist of sub-Arctics quick-slow musings. Following a cracking little set from the inter-band DJ (Roxy, Tom [...]

The other day I expressed a view misgivings as to whether the Eugene McGuinness album would cut the mustard so effortlessly and thrillingly splattered by the preceding mini-album, The Early Learnings... The self-titled affair has been knocking around my shitty MP3 player for a week or so and I'm warming to its subtleties a lot. I was worried that there would be no moments of joyous exuberance to match the likes of Bold Street, Monsters Under The Bed & A Girl Whom My Eyes Shine For . Nightshift [...]
You're not often let down by a member of the Domino Records roster (whose famous alumi include Pavement and ...Trail Of The Dead, along with more recent luminaires Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys), so it was pretty unsurprising when last year's mini album from Eugene McGuinness was well received. And isn't just extra nice when Domino decide to give away one of his songs for free? Admittedly, the freebie is in aid of Eugene's self titled full length album dealio as well as the [ digital download service ] that Domino is [...]
Returning to London after a year long hiatus, I resolved to throw myself back into the thick of things, you know what that means kids, a gig double header. And not just any gig double header - A Double Six Records Double Header (That's A Double Six Records, A Sub Division of the Domino Recording Co Double Header). Brief is how I shall try and keep this as I am growing averse to live reviews - they are all beset by the same problems and reporting them never changes. I can only hope to use whatever problems arise [...]

Este es el tracklist del disco: 'Rings Around Rosa' 'Fonz' 'Wendy Wonders' 'Moscow State Circus' 'Those Old BW Movies' 'Nightshift' 'Atlas' 'Knock Down Ginger' [...]
Meet one of Domino Records newest signings, singer-songwriter Eugene McGuinness . Coming in October will be his self-titled debut after the 2007 release of his intro EP called The Early Learnings Of.... . Mr. McGuinness is not your ordinary SSW; he brings forth the same musical ingenuity that you'd tend to discover in folks like Rufus Wainright, Billy Bragg and a little Robyn Hitchcock. But you be the judge. Monster Under The Bed - Eugene McGuiness [...]

This year's list has been so much harder to compile than last year's. Its probably because i've listened to double the amount of albums than in '06 and so i've had twice the amount of songs to go through. Its also because the quality of music released since last January has been pretty exceptional. This list has been through so many reshuffles and rejigs in the past few weeks, constantly morphing every time i relisten to the albums i've shortlisted and so finally, here's the start of my 15 favourite albums of the [...]
A slight change in programming: I'm pushing back writing and posting my favorite albums list til the quiet period between Christmas and New Year's when I'll have time and energy to give these records their due. (And when I'm out of the office for almost two weeks, woo!). Basically, the list will go up exactly one hour after you've stopped caring about such things. So be it. Instead: a mop-up post of good EPs and reissues and music I loved (sometimes obsessively) in 2007 that wasn't released in 2007. And other bits n' bobs. I will [...]

Taking a baby to a festival isn't easy. We had an inkling of this when we decided to head back to the End of the Road Festival , back when it was announced at the start of the year. We thought that since The Baby Growl would be three months, she might be old enough (or maybe that we would be used to being parents enough) to take her to a festival, but also that she would be too young to take camping. So we booked tickets and a cottage nearby to act as a substitute tent. When we [...]
Due to automobile, exhaustion, tent and stupidity issues I arrived at Larmer Tree Gardens extremely late on the Friday which meant I missed the Willard Grant Conspiracy, who had an oddly early slot, and Stephanie Dosen. This is particularly irritating as the Willards are one of my favourite groups, but never mind. There's [...]

When is an album not an album? Or rather, how many tracks does it take to push a mini-album up to a full album? The Early Learnings of Eugene McGuinness , the debut release from Eugene McGuinness (naturally) has 8 tracks, and it's being classed as a mini-album. But all the Stooges classics had 8 or less songs, didn't they? Oh well, never mind. I was keen to check out the young Liverpudlian's recorded output since catching him supporting Emmy the Great the other week . I was impressed by his flair and way [...]

Image: Suzanne Clements High Score - Eugene McGuinness Singing-songwriting wunderkind Eugene McGuinness gets compared to The Shins, and perhaps rightfully so: He has a similar easy melodicism and a wordwordwordiness. But wrongfully so if you consider the po-facedness of said Shins, their tendency to take themselves just a bit seriously. Because McGuinness is an ironist, a jester of clever asides, a greeter of misfortune with devil's horns and funny glasses. And this is cool, this [...]
