Words by Brendan I'm not sure how to label this post. It's partly an introduction to a great band, so I want to say it's a New To Us, New To You? segment. It's partly a transcription of an awesome, lengthy chat I had with the band, so I want to call it an interview . It's partly a concert review , since I saw the band play a set at Commonplace Coffee in Squirrel Hill. But ultimately, the title above is the only appropriate one: I saw their show, [...]

Just stocking up on some mellow tunes before the weekend. I am looking down the barrel at a couple of days of spring cleaning...YEAH! What better way to get into the spirit then to have some music to help numb the pain. I'll hit you with some more upbeat stuff in a bit here... ![Eureka Birds: Eureka! EP [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3443570_lg.jpg)
"That Mountain Is A Volcano" kicks off Eureka Birds ' recent EP soft and psychedelic, but the song increases in volume and momentum by the end, with swirling guitars and a hint of lightly subdued feedback. This is precisely what you want from a psychedelic pop song, and this is where Eureka Birds are their best. They pick up this dominating presence again on "There Was Light" and "Cactus Man", splitting each with a quieter, softer song. "Sarah (Sits and Cries)" is the most notable of these, featuring a [...]

Tweet Slowcore is a genre which has had a shortage of flag-bearers over the years, especially post-2000. A genre that was basically constructed as anti-grunge was always going to struggle for appeal once grunge itself faded from the spotlight. It makes sense, but it's still a bummer. Luckily though, Baltimore band Eureka Birds are here with an EP that makes tentative steps towards achieving the brilliance of the oh-so-mellow sound of mid-90s slowcore pioneers like Low. "Eureka!" was recorded with Tyler Watkins of Margot [...]

This is not a Monday, it's a volcano: Monday Mail What is Monday Mail? Yesterday's news provided one of those moments. You know, the kind where you used to call up your friends, but now you just watch your FB/Twitter feeds for clever things people are posting online? There were links to Al-Jazeera live feeds, NYT articles, Family Guy clips, Star Wars references, declarations of general anxiety about killing anyone for any reason, even an Obama macro that featured the kind of [...]

Although the vast majority of my music-listening this week has been dedicated to fully absorbing Fleet Foxes' incredible new album, I did take a break today to check out some of the new stuff being sent my way. I was struck by the well-crafted, heartfelt indie pop of Baltimore's Eureka Birds . The band has been busy recently released the altogether wonderful Eureka! EP and playing I Guess I'm Floating's showcase at SXSW. The six-track EP is full of lovely, understated melodies and lush instrumental arrangements with a whole lot of heart. The track [...]

Here it is, the Turntable Kitchen March 2011 mix. It came together surprisingly quickly, and yet I feel like it is one of my favorite mixes I've put together in awhile. It is certainly eclectic, but that undoubtedly reflects the fact that my mind has been suffering from musical attention deficit disorder. I've been listening [...]

The slow rumble of the drums, wall-to-wall arrangements and the vocals riding on top. That was the sound associated with Baltimore band Eureka Birds . So it is nice surprise that they kick off their new EP Eureka! with the bare bones The Mountain is a Volcano ., a restrained song with a lone guitar interacting with the keyboards and percussion. The lush arrangements are still there, but it's less crowded, making it easier to appreciate the individual players. By keeping it simple - not stupid - songs like the catchy Cactus [...]

It's been four days since I put the call out for straight-forward, even-keeled, unpretentious, honest pop rock. Apparently the indie rock gods heard my calls and graced me with the newest EP from Baltimore-based band Eureka Birds . Eureka Birds - That Mountain Is A Volcano Eureka Birds - There Was Light

Eureka Birds are a band from Baltimore who make delicate indie rock for the soft of heart. Their Eureka! EP is finely packaged with 6 songs that are simple a pleasure to listen to. Each song is built around a lovely melody that becomes fully realized with Justin Levy's warm vocals. Their songs take flight with a wide variety of influences that create the ultimate package. These guys are far from amateurs. At parts, the EP reminds me of some familiar artists. "Sarah (Sits and Cries)" sounds like an ode to Rockin' The Suburbs era [...]

Best EP of 2010, I have met thee, and thou art Eureka! Eureka Birds are near my current home and not too far from my place of origin (they're from Baltimore), and they've been around for a while now. Indie pop is often like candy-it sounds good going in but it can't sustain. But to quote the Beastie Boys, "This is like having a delicious meal!" You need to hear this EP. Part psychedelic Beatles. Part Beach Boys. Part Wings. Trust me. It's available on Itunes , and you can taste a couple tunes below. Support [...]
In need of a soft pop rock kind of fix, then Baltimore's Eureka Birds can be your supplier with their newly released Eureka! EP. Back in '08 their self titled debut was one of my... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]
Of the Eureka Birds debut album, IR New York host and frequent reviewer Sarah Morrison had this to say: "To write a long and detailed review of this album would be pointless, because honestly the songs speak for themselves. Remarkably it's their debut album, which begs belief because they've got it so, so right. It's [...]

Eureka Birds , a four-piece (sometimes fiver) band I included in my Memorial Day mix back in May, released a new EP today, titled Eureka! How 'bout that! The Eureka crew, from Baltimore, has been around since 2006 making sweet, subdued pop, with a self-titled debut album and now the Eureka! EP under their name. Frontman Justin Levy, who often tours solo as "Eureka Bird" (see dates after the jump), employs a delicate falsetto above the wistful tunes, which were crisply produced by Tyler Watkins of The Margot [...]

This is the second installment of my Memorial Day mix, which will happen every, um, Memorial Day. Take a look back at last year's mix here (sorry, the mp3s no longer work...can't just leave them up forever!). We Knox Roadians hope you're all having fantastic Memorial Day weekends. Last year, I started off the Memorial Day mix with a British group (Bloc Party), you know, for the spirit and all...but I think I'll go American this year. A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of seeing one of Baltimore's best unsigned bands, Eureka Birds, play at Iota. They played at one of the Federal Reserves gatherings (a collective started by dc folks like These United States and Vandaveer), and performed a really impressive set. Eureka Birds released a self-titled debut album last year that blends together folk, rock, pop, and even a bit of punk. It creates for a unique sound and the creative composition leaves the instruments telling an eerie story of their own. It may take a little [...]
The moody, Halloween-esque crawl of Eureka Birds' debut self-titled album doesn't carry an imposing pop tune. We dug it regardless, and since it is being offered for free now, we hope you can spin it ...
