By now, you've most likely heard the sad passing of Whitney Houston on every news outlet and social media network. Although you're unlikely to hear Whitney Houston directly on KEXP, her influence was undeniable and widespread. Even the most jaded hipsters may count her songs and albums as a core part of their early music listening experience, and countless bands cite her as an inspiration. As news continues to spread online, her music and influence is being celebrated by a wide range of artists - from Black Lips to Foster the People to [...]
Hotel Sessions captures Evan Dando doing early acoustic takes of future Lemonheads classics in a hotel on a Sunday night in the early '90s.

[Photos by Ken Grand-Pierre. See his Flickr stream here ] As acts from the early 90s have continued to take victory laps over the past few years, I have had a chance to reflect on how different the personalities were that dominated the music scene then than those from today's self-affirming generation making vital new music today. In an era principally concerned with authenticity, its troubadours were often people who lived hard and felt deeply - addicts, romantics, and the generally self-destructive. And if you wanted a picture of the archetypal musician of the era, you might consider [...]

top of the sunday morning, y'all! today is really a bummer, i must admit. my football season is over. of course my bears were never really a factor, well they were until cutler got hurt, but now that the saints lost, its done. sure, ill still watch the games, but my give a shit level is pretty low. much credit to the niners, man. never thought they had a chance, but as per usual what the hell do i know? oh, and couch by couchwest is starting back up shortly. there has been a facebook fan [...]

Photo by Stereogum The Lemonheads / Stage AE / 01.16.2012 / Doors 7:00 / $15 Words by Brendan Welcome to the New Year, 2012, folks! There are tons of awesome concerts in the 'Burgh already announced for this year, and we'll surely be giving away free tickets to a bunch of them. We're kicking that all off with The Lemonheads , who will be playing The Club venue at Stage AE next Monday evening. We have TWO FREE TICKETS [...]

While Evan Dando may be a prime slacker as casual as an army of devout ATP aficionados, to a full house at the Empire he unplugs intermittently the lethargic aesthetic to reveal an inner romantic purely (and at times wonderfully puerilely) splurging contorted impressions of human affection and still-confounding metaphor. The Lemonheads aren't of course here to send us all stampeding possessedly in the direction of the starkly, artificially illuminated merch stand at the back of this once-characterful venue to then tear glinting cellophane from the smoothed back of a new [...]

This is called the Barfcast because I feel like utter, unmitigated shite this morning, after another awesome evening with Mrs. Toad getting scooshed and playing records. I think I had Weald on at the maximum volume our amp can actually manage. Which, for the record, is pretty fucking loud. So now I am off to get ready for not one, but three gigs. Firstly the Ides of Toad at Henry's, then Lach and Viv Albertine after that, and then Flamin' Hott Toadzzz! in Anstruther tomorrow. When the chance to have a good sleep comes, I think I will [...]
Evan Dando and The Lemonheads played It's a Shame About Ray at The Independent Sunday night, with support from The Shining Twins.

Evan Dando @ Lee's Palace: photo by Michael Ligon After a steady diet of The Smiths, New Order, The Cure and and The Jesus and Mary Chain in the late 80's, the 90's were to usher in a shift in my musical tastes. discovered the Pixies and their eclectic musical stew of surf, garage, punk and pop just prior to their breakup and their last album, 1991's "Trompe Le Monde" . The musical axis of 1991 and 1992 of course was dominated for me and many others by Seattle's Nirvana [...]

With all the attention being paid to celebrating the legacy grunge bands this year, it's easy to forget that the early 19902s were also a true turning point for a genre that was previously known as college rock, but had been rechristened alternative thanks in part to MTV shows like Alternative Nation and 120 Minutes. Among the bands that found themselves suddenly gaining new fans, which included a young Scotty B, thanks to MTV airplay was the Boston-based act The Lemonheads . There are some people, in spite of their every effort and bad habits , that will never age a day. Evan Dando of the Lemonheads happens to be one of those people. If anything, Dando has aged like a fine wine even with his much-publicized affair with drugs, a marriage with a model that has recently ended, and a self-proclaimed lack of ambition. Dando is now 44 years old, separated from his wife, and living a sober(er) life post-alcoholism (though he still maintains he likes taking mushrooms on a monthly basis). For those of you [...]
"The film is a unique portrait of an incredibly talented group of musicians who crafted three albums now considered pop masterpieces (all of which charted on Rolling Stone's [...]
Video: Vimeo - YouTube Photos: Flickr Audio: zip dowload (right click, save as) This session came together in an extremely short space of time, and as such I am extremely pleasantly surprised by how well it turned out - from an audio point of view in particular these are some of my favourite session recordings. We invited Milk Maid to play an Ides of Toad gig in June, they arrived the night before the gig, and we happened to [...]

While we certainly don't pretend to be experts on the world of hip-hop around these part, we undoubtedly had to sit up and take notice when two of the biggest names in the genre decided to not only team up to put out an album, but to also hit the road together. On August 8, the dynamic duo of Jay-Z and Kanye West , will release their long in the works debut album Watch The Throne . The pair, who have dubbed themselves The Throne, have lined up a 24-date fall tour, that kicks [...]

The Lemonheads are gearing up for a tour supporting or celebrating (but more likely cashing in on) an album that came out 19 years ago. It's A Shame About Ray is founding member Evan Dando's unquestionable masterpiece. Never has he put together a collection of such effortless, memorable, and affecting folk-pop. Despite Dando's notorious struggles with drugs over the years and his inability to gain any lasting traction with subsequent albums, fans will likely come out of the woodwork to hear this record performed in its entirety. The Lemonheads is and has always been Dando, so [...]

There *is* a documentary on legendary 70s Memphis powerpop band Big Star coming sometime this year...yes, you too will be able to hear the ins and outs of the story behind that band that just didn't quite make it huge in 1974 when it should have. It seems like the new doc will be made up of a lot of tribute footage from the 2010 shows at SXSW right before Alex Chilton died. There's footage in the trailer/screener below with The Posies' Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer, [...]

Evan Dando & Juliana Hatfield: photo by Michael Ligon I stayed surprisingly true to my original picks for this night of NXNE . And making the most of my Priority Plass(thanks NXNE), I hit the night hard. Kicking off the night early, I hit The Music Gallery to take in the 7 pm set of Toronto-by-way-of-California band Snowblink . I arrived just after the band had started it seemed with most of the pew seating occupied so I took to the right side of the [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Courtesy of Juliana Hatfield | Myspace NXNE is a time to discover new and emerging talent, but one look at this year's lineup reveals that it's equally about celebrating influential artists from the '90s. That spirit of nostalgia certainly informed Evan Dando and Juliana Hatfield 's showcase at Lee's Palace Thursday evening (June 16) in Toronto. Dando [...]
I had quite the conundrum with this year's NXNE. While there are plenty of acts I'd like to see, there were very few shows that I really felt a burning NEED to see. Thursday night's line-up at Lee's Palace was an exception. Chris Velan First up to the plate was Montreal's Chris Velan. The room was tragically empty for his set, which showcased his beautiful songs. He had a laid back vibe
