Yes folks, it's almost that time of year again; one marked by BBQ, tex mex, margaritas, ice cold, Lone Star tall boys, and oh yes, music. SXSW. With thousands of bands descending upon Austin, March 12th through the 16th, it's helpful that the festival's official website offers up, along with the artist's bio, an [...]

Their most recent album released on January 22, 2008 titled " The Evening Descends ." Following the release they began a seven week cross country tour with the opening band "Headlights." Many of their songs will try to confuse you. Their lyrics are crazy and their track titles are gloomy. But their music is catchy and fun. Definitely head bobbing material. So if you're looking at the album cover, reading the titles and hoping for something forlorn then don't buy it. If you like Neutral Milk Hotel or The Starlight Mints then [...]

I'm starting to think, just like sunglasses and underwear, these iPods are disposable. This dying Nano is just dying to meet the dust heap - so your Shuffled Selections are from iTunes this morning... Evangelicals (Norman, Oklahoma) I think right now if I had to pick my favourite album to come out this year, it would probably be Evangelicals ' second album, The Night Descends . It is so psychedelic and so operatic. This is one of those albums where I get excited as each new song begins. The kaleidoscopic sonic journey certainly gives a nod to fellow Oklahomans The Flaming Lips as well as many other folks, but the last thing [...]
Picking up where their 2006 debut So Gone left off, Evangelicals leave behind much of their ADD-addled approach on The Evening Descends, instead taking their wealth of great ideas and harnessing them for good. The hyperactive, overdriven pop is still here, but it is balanced with restraint--not a lot, but enough--that allows the songs to shine through. All this and stories, too: Beneath the shrieks of guitars, keyboard blasts, and proggy space-age grooves, singer/guitarist Josh Jones leads the listener through tales of religion and revivalism, plus insanity, drugs, black-outs, zombies, good and evil, car crashes, love [...]

I'm just getting into Evangelicals , who hail from Oklahoma but sound like they might have arrived there via an alternate universe where glam rock, psychedelic pop and goth get mixed in a bunt pan and put in the microwave on high. The resulting glow of energy seems to have caused some kind of religious euphoria experienced by the band members, and they've come to our world to deliver us from evil (read: bad music) and preach the good news that some one out there is making some interesting new music. Does [...]

There's even more tomorrow, but first, concentrate on today. mp3: Atlas Sound - Without Headlights --> website --> buy mp3: Valet [...]

Photo by Kristen Lidell Okay, that's not entirely accurate - we knew exactly where Hot Freaks 2 was . And the first one . And that's where part the third will be as well - next month, coincidentally running at the same time as a certain music festival in Austin, Texas that shall not be named for we have no affiliation with that event whatsoever, at Club DeVille and The Mohawk (aka "the best bar in America" ) on March 14 and 15 from noon till 6PM, across two venues and [...]

Monday: Calvin Johnson @ Lutheran Church of the Messiah 8pm $7 Calvin Johnson is the type of explosive performer that could tear up a room on any given night, but given this is the third night of a holiday weekend I expect everyone will be doubly delirious with all their hard earned rest. What better way to celebrate President's Day then with an awesome ruckus? Calvin Johnson - "I'm Down"
Like I said, Evangelicals and Headlights are playing tonight in Lexington at the Void skate shop. Here's another selection from a record that I've criminally overlooked. I love the Evangelicals, so it's completely on me that I haven't posted this yet. MP3: Evangelicals - Skeleton Man Sounds like: Clap Your Hands ...

Who needs RSS feeds, PR email blasts, and hyperbolic blog posts* when you've got a good old fashioned community bulletin board still up and running on MySpace? True, the 21st-century equivalent to cork-board and thumbtack affixed solicitations for ride shares and pottery classes down at the rec center may have lost some of its shine to Facebook, but there's still much desirable info to be collected. Keep reading to hear about Pinback playing live on Fuse TV, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin shilling Mastercard, and Evangelicals waxing on Neutral Milk Hotel. Call it OPP part deux... [...]
Kanye West and Daft Punk - Stronger (live at the '08 Grammys) Rather disappointing. It certainly doesn't compare to these performances: Daft Hands and Daft Bodies By now, you've probably also heard that Obama beat Clinton over the weekend. I mean at the Grammys too. He won a Grammy for spoken word recording, beating Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. I Make This Sound - King and Queen I
