Wikipedia No two ways about it, 2009 sucked. Hard. It started badly with the demise of a relationship and despite my determination to pull myself up by the proverbial bootstraps, only went downhill from there. The past twelve months have been marked by people moving on, moving away and passing away - not just my loved ones but those of people close to me. If there's any silver lining to the huge, black cumulonimbus thunderhead that was this year, it's that it's over and I can only hope it's not tempting fate [...]
While I could tell you that Evening Hymns is the moniker for one man with a guitar named Jonas Bonnetta, and that this song hails from his gorgeous album Spirit Guides, allow me to instead simply tell you this:I'm sitting next to the giant picture window of my house, overlooking the freshly snow-encrusted trees of the forest and the white winds that weave through them, sipping hot chocolate. Frank Yang The Bellwoods crew is certainly setting a high standard when it comes to set dressings. Thanks to them, I've now attended shows in the heart of a volcano , an exploding library in the sky and as of this past Friday night, a heavily wooded lumberjack camp. In reality, it was the Tranzac and the occasion was the record release party for Evening Hymns' new album Spirit Guides ; a grand and gauzey statement of gospel-inflected folk-rock which is quite highly-regarded [...]

My experiences Thursday and Friday night really couldn't've been a whole lot different. While Thursday night was primarily and friends and family sort of thing , Friday night was a real scenester sort of... scene. I don't go to a ton of shows, but I recognized at least two dozen or so people from other pretty awesome bands. This may have been because there were, according to the National Post, 16 or so of Jonas Bonnetta (Evening Hymns)'s closests friends (I assume) that appeared on his new, and excellent , album Spirit Guides . [...]

In a recent National Post article , Jonas Bonnetta explains that he stopped recording under his own name because he didn't want to get pigeon holed as just another dude with a guitar. So, the story goes, Bonnetta began recording under the moniker Evening Hymns - something that suggests more of a collective effort... maybe it's the use of the plural... I'm not sure. On the album, Spirit Guides ( Out of This Spark ), Bonnetta certainly differentiates himself from the countless other guys w/ guitars that are [...]

Did anyone catch Evening Hymns ' record release last night? Was I the only one left out in the rain, waiting for a ride home from work? Fair, fair. For those of you who haven't heard of Evening Hymns, they're a Toronto-ish based band who wear their badges of the Bellwoods club, including friends and tourmates like Ohbijou and The Wooden Sky. Jonas Bonnetta's 'Spirit Guides' is stunning, from the tracks I'v heard so far. It's calm and steady, like a funeral wake in the middle of a forest. There's talk of spirits, deer, death, rifles, stars, and all [...]

Every year I put together a list together of my favorite songs from the year that was, usually around Thanksgiving time, and every time some song slips in to my head in December that totally would have been on my 'best of' list. This year's song of destiny is this one I am sharing from the Toronto band Evening Hymns. Their entire 'Spirit Guild' album is amazing, but this song is killer...although I am a bit concerned to make such a connection with a song that erupts into a refrain like '"lying there like a dead deer"...oh well, [...]

(photo: outofthisspark.com) There's a kind of hush that opens "Lanterns", the first track of Spirit Guides by Evening Hymns that reminds me of standing alone in a sacred space, dimly lit, with just your thoughts for company. The tone of the album is one of contemplation, or yearning for some understanding and meaning of life, love; a longing for answers that probably don't exist, and may very well just lead to more questions and confusion. That being said, it's also a gorgeous album of stark beauty and lushness, [...]

Merge Last week, I was complaining that with the US holiday season, there wasn't nearly enough blog fodder trickling out of the interwebs. This week, it's like a deluge. We begin wading through it all in Scandinavia, particularly Stockholm, Sweden, home of the Shout Out Louds . The quintet turned in one of the indie-pop highlights of 2007 with Our Ill Wills and are set to follow it up with the release of Work . For this outing, they've opted to [...]

On November 27th I went to Black Sheep Inn again. This time I went to see three different acts which were: The Wooden Sky Evening Hymns Lake Of Stew It was a great night of music besides seeing The Wooden Sky various times. This was a first time seeing two acts which were Evening [...]

Photography by Hidden-target I'm not a man of traditions, or a traditional man. Sure, I've got my rituals and routines, just like everyone else, but I've never been one to build my year or life or whatever around that many repeating events. One man's Thanksgiving is another man's Thursday, it's just by the luck of the draw that this consciousness happened to come about in the states. I could've just as easily been popped out a relatively short distance north and then my Thankgiving would've been last month, [...]

eveninghymns.com They say you can tell a lot about someone by the company they keep, and nowhere is this more true than in the case of Peterborough's Jonas Bonnetta, aka Evening Hymns , who first earned notice in these parts back in June opening up for Ohbijou . The liner notes of his second album, the just-released Spirit Guides , reads like a who's who of the Bellwoods crew , including members of Forest City Lovers , Ohbijou and The Wooden Sky , to name [...]

Evening Hymns - Port Hope

Have you ever been around a group of friends that constantly tries to set up their single friend? They constantly talk about the friend's heart, personality and how perfect they could be for the right person. Musically, I think a lot of the talent on the Out of This Spark collective – Ohbijou, Forest City Lovers, The D'Urbervilles – feel this way about a young man from Orono, Ontario named Jonas Bonetta . Jonas, who writes under the moniker of Evening Hymns , will release his OTTS debut full length on November [...]

Frank Yang When the Summerworks festival last year decided to incorporate a music program into its already-established showcase for independent theatre, it seemed an ambitious yet eminently logical way to introduce fans of one art to the other - see am up-and-coming play, stick around for a couple up-and-coming bands. Has it worked? One can only hope, though considering Thursday night's show was the first one I'd made it to either last year or this and I didn't come early for the play, I may not be the best sample group. The [...]

Frank Yang You might say this gig was a long time coming. After their triumphant show at Lee's Palace last November to wrap their continent-spanning tour with The Acorn , Toronto's orch-pop heroes Ohbijou went into seclusion to work on their sophomore album and emerged this Spring with Beacons . Or at least they were supposed to - almost as soon as they were announced in late February, the April release date and accompanying tour, including a hometown release party, were all were suddenly cancelled with [...]
The Over the Top Festival is happening this weekend in Toronto! Music and film and theatre. It's nuts, and all organized by one guy (Eric Warner, with help from his friends). Music is what most interests me, so here's what you need to know to make the best of your Thursday through Saturday. There are advance tickets for many of the shows, available at Rotate This and Soundscapes . You can also purchase a festival pass, which gets you into all the music, films, and plays (but not " The Book of Judith "). Tickets [...]
