Thanks to my latest best friend RH and some intensive research, my shortlist of lesser known originals now approaches 200 tracks. Suffice it to say that I won't feature all of them, and that this will still be a very long series. As always, I would be pleased to know which version the reader likes better. Everly Brothers - Love Hurts.mp3 Roy Orbison - Love Hurts.mp3 Gram Parsons & Emmylou

Well, there you have it. This is probably the last of my series on the "original" version of Gram Parsons' songs. This installment focuses on Gram's solo albums. The first three songs (1-3) were covered on Gram's first solo LP, GP , released in 1972. The next three (4-6) were covered on his second solo LP, Grievous Angel , released posthumously in 1974. Songs 7-9 are the original verions of songs Gram and Emmylou recorded as outakes from the Grievous Angel sessions (available on various compilations, [...]
Inspired by a propitious confluence of a long discussion about cover versions we didn't know where covers and a generous correspondent whom we'll know as RH e-mailing me a bunch of rare originals of better known covers, we are now at the cusp of what will be a longish series. Any Major Notebook now includes two pages worth of almost 100 shortlisted songs that in their original form are lesser

Quick, name a song the Everly Brothers shouldn't sing ... Actually, only one of them sings it, but it doesn't stop the thing from going Pete Tong by bar 11 or so. It makes you wonder what business Ibsen had writing 60's pop songs* *He didn't but this sounds like he might have done. [ed]

Did you know that Tom Petty was in a band before Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers made Gainesville famous? I mean, I assumed he had been in a number of bands while starting out, but I didn't think any were of much consequence. I guess perhaps had it not been for Tom inviting the original members of Mudcrutch up to his place for some reminiscing and recording he wouldn't have been...but he did, and it was. Now, I'm not gonna try and paint myself as some Petty maniac. I like 6 or 7 songs off each album but [...]

In 1968, Don and Phil Everly put out Roots , a collection of old country and blues tunes that sound just as sweet as cherry wine. It's a Sweetheart Of The Rodeo kind of affair and it'll put you in Kentucky after the first 30 seconds of their take on "Mama Tried." You can sort of tell how hard they're trying to sound "country" but the album's cover will put those fears to rest. Highlight is Randy Newman's "Illinois" with the Charlie Brown piano solo, but I'll let you find that [...]
The Every Brothers - Love Hurts Covered numerous times, though arguably most known as a rock ballad by Nazareth, the original was performed by The Everly Brothers and written by the husband and wife songwriting team of Felice & Boudleaux Bryant. With Nazareth's This Flight Tonight also being a cover of Joni Mitchell, I was surprised that I didn't suddenly find out Hair of the Dog was secretly a cover too. Felice & Boudleaux Bryant wrote a bunch of songs that were hits for The Everly Brothers including Wake Up Little [...]

I gave a nice little rant on the Eyes last week and included their cover of the Everly Brothers "Man With Money". Then the other night the Griefs opened their Philly show with a cover of the same song. While I totally dig the Eyes cover (and the Griefs for that matter), I must say that I dig the the original a lot more. Below are both songs so you can decide for yourself. This post has: 2 MP3's

This post is inspired by an e-mail from reader Tom who took issue with my off-the-cuff comment in an earlier post that Gram Parsons "wrote the book" on country rock . I had been referring to Parsons' work with The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, & as a solo act, and wrongly implied that Parsons invented country rock. Tom, who knows his stuff, rightly pointed out that several country rock songs were released before The Byrds put country-rock on the map in the Summer of 1968 with Sweetheart of the Rodeo . [...]

So, ever since posting their version of "Love Hurts" during my K-Dilly 70s streak a while back, I've been on a bit of an Everyly Brothers kick. Since a small handful of their albums just popped up on eMusic (and they've been running a $9.99 special on Booster Pack downloads this month), I spent the other day downloading pretty much everything they had available. I will sometimes read the user reviews for albums on eMusic to check out any recommended tracks, or to get fair warning from other users to make sure if these albums are the [...]

The Everly Brothers have been ripe for a post for a while now. Ever since Kat posted Cathy's Clown on the ever-great Keep the Coffee Coming , I've been thinking about them. A little bit country, a little bit rock'n'roll, a bit pop and a bit bluegrass, it's no wonder that our Lonesome Dad likes them. And so do a load of others too. Jarvis picked them out for his The Trip album, Richard Hawley covered them on Cole's Corner and now Robert Plant and Alison Krauss have [...]

"Fox on the Run" by SWEET: Every time I hear this song played unexpectedly on iTunes' Party Shuffle, that goofy intro scares me into thinking that somehow the Steve Miller Band's "Swingtown" snuck onto my computer. Because, man, do I fucking hate me some Steve Miller. Luckily, it's just the opening notes of (the) Sweet classic "Fox on the Run," a sublime rollerskating jam that combines ELO and T.Rex. Of course, Sweet aren't completely innocent in my eyes, having scored a hit with another of my all time least favorite songs, "Ball Room Blitz." [...]

Since this whole crazy deeleebob hails from Philly, The City of Brotherly Love, I have decided to throw together a list of bands with "brother" in their name. As usual, they are in beta-alpha-cal order. Wood Brothers ~ One More Day Waco Brothers ~ Nothing At All Scala & Kolacny Brothers ~ With or Without You (U2 cover) Righteous Brothers ~ Unchained Melody Neville Brothers Mills [...]
