Great songwriting. Case Studies a/k/a Jesse Lortz formerly of The Dutchess and The Duke's "Everything" is a tremendous song. Soulful, thoughtful, expressed with purpose; "Everything" marries the sound of traditional American folk with it's Southern Soul branches. I can picture crossing the bridge into Memphis with those guitar leads in the last bit sort of gliding with each shimmer of the sun on the Mississippi. "Everything" is excerpted from Case Studies' sophomore LP This Is Another Life due June 11th on Sacred Bones. Case Studies [...]

Long have we supported Jesse Lortz, ever since his early days with Dutchess and the Duke ; he's since moved on, working on his new project Case Studies . He seems so much more comfortable stepping into the light on his own, with a great drawl to his voice, evoking every last drop of emotion. The song's built around the backbone of a piano, but the solo guitar work near the end of the track really emphasizes the accomplished range of Lortz as a songwriter. His new album This Is Another [...]

With 14 international magazine front covers to her name, numerous producer/DJ awards and 10 million You Tube views, it’s hard to believe that MAYA JANE COLES is yet to release an artist album. All that is about to change in June 2013 with the release of her debut LP 'Comfort' (I/AM/ME via Kobalt Label Services), one of the most eagerly awaited debut electronic albums in years. As a prelude to the album dropping, MAYA has chosen to release lead single "Everything" featuring Grammy Award winning Scandinavian songstress KARIN PARK [...]

I live by the Chicago Reader , a free weekly publication that gives recommendations for events and music for the week. Every Monday I get an email itinerary from the Reader telling me what to do for the week, and I do it. Two and a half years into living in Chicago, it has become my personal goal to preempt the Reader - I want to be so far into the music world that I know who's coming and who's worth seeing before the Reader even tells me (but being the self-doubting person that I am, I of course [...]
The 25 year old British-Japanese Producer/DJ, Maya Jane Coles, has dropped off the official video for her single Everything today! Besides being an awesome deep house jam, the song is paired with visuals which compliment the creepiness, which I'm totally diggin'. It's wonderful to see an artist stay true to what they love; in this case a dark and eery feel, which seems to be the aura Maya usual goes for! Definitely a quality set of music and visuals, look below to purchase the official single! Purchase: Maya Jane Coles Feat. Karin Park - Everything [...]

Yinyues is an emerging chillwave producer out of the UK. So far that’s about all we know of this apparent newcomer to an already booming electronic scene. Though it’s obvious after hearing his most recent single “Everything” that Yinyues is intent on immediately making a name for himself. It’s a moving, cinematic blend of lovely piano melodies, heavy drums, and the exquisite voice of Mimi Page. Keep an eye out for this exciting new project in the months ahead.

Baltimore - Every sunny Sunday since I moved down, the rumbling sound of engines invariably invades Orlean Street some time in the afternoon. At first it would be a few lone engine bursts, sounding like the cries of old men being ferried across pothole-filled roads at breakneck speed. But soon it crescendos into a background so loud, that you feel like your landlord just took the rent from the whole National Zoo. And when it all trails off with that unmistakably tragic Dopler shift, I'm left confused about what it was all about. In this documentary, I got a glimpse [...]
![Hot Docs Review: The Great North Korean Picture Show [James Leong and Lynn Lee, 2013]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4927238_lg.jpg)
Baltimore - The aptly titled GNPS is a collection of montages from 2009 when, after months of email exchanges and gentle persuasion, Leong and Lee finally got the permission to shoot inside the Hermit Kingdom, albeit with handlers trailing their every step. From start to finish, this seemingly plain analysis showcases the performances of a group of young film school students in "real" life in order to tease out a version of the North Korean reality, all while without telling you explicitly how the directors themselves perceived. It doesn't get much more meta-circular than that. Kim Jong-Il is known [...]

Baltimore - I'm not a fan of throat-singing. That's why I don't like this film. I'm joking; I love it when humans imitate didgeridoos. But I hate it when cowards imitate visionaries. When someone said "the whole planet will be a desert in 70 years", that says more about their lack of imagination (and geophysical education) than their foresight. I really don't recommend this film unless you are already in the choir and love being preached to. Fall and Winter is an alarmist piece that preys on hippies. Starting with a collection of the problems facing modern America, it [...]
![Hot Docs Review: Tales from the Organ Trade [Ric Esther Bienstock, 2013]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4920000_lg.jpg)
There is a "little known" problem with money: it discourages a holistic valuation from a humane perspective. Everything can be transacted, but not everyone can agree on a fair price. Is it really moral to discourage organ trading while thousands die from conditions that are medically trivial if only given a supply that can match the demand? This is the value that Bienstock's documentary questions. I can just imagine the Q&A session filled with outraged people with two healthy kidneys. The title says organ, but the whole film is really about kidney trades. We are all familiar (but hopefully not [...]

Credit: Ryan Emberley The past few years have seen a resurgence in all things manly. Maybe it was because of Mad Men. Maybe it was those Old Spice or Dos Equis commercials. Maybe it was the bacon loving dude with the stache in the Park and Recreations show that everyone loves. Regardless of what it is, things are looking manly these days. They all seemed to converge at the inaugural Canadian Club National Meeting at the Hart House on April 18. Hosted by Canadian Club, it was a night filled with all [...]

I must be getting old. It seemed everyone in the crowd at this show was about 15 years old. They weren't checking ID's, so maybe? Matt Pond PA was the opening band to Jukebox The Ghost, which also made me feel old, because dude's been around forever! Matt Pond PA I came in to the last two songs of his set. His voice is crystal clear, and pitch perfect. Matt Pond PA has been around since 1998, and has cranked out 8 LPs and 8 EPs, it was a little bit confusing to see him opening [...]
Before Their Eyes is a post-hardcore band from Findlay, Ohio. Founded by vocalist Nick Moore, the name of the band is taken from the New Testament verse Romans 3:18: “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Their second album, The Dawn of My Death, was released October 28, 2008. The album reached #10 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Their third album, “Untouchable”, was released March 16, 210. The album reached #22 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart. Their fourth album “Redemption” was released March 26, 2012 and reached #29 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and #30 on Billboards Top [...]

An unexpected pleasure at SXSW, Philly rapper Grande Marshall left it all out on stage at Fader Fort on Saturday. I haven't been to many hip hop shows in my lifetime, but if all of them are like his set in Austin, then sign me up. Taking the stage a 2 pm is no easy task but Grande Marshall and friends treated the show like it was at 2 am. I don't really know how to actually review a rap show only to say that the "flow" was good and I enjoyed the pace that [...]

Austin - The backyard of a grease monkey is probably the last place I'd choose to perform if I'm a soul player. But then, maybe that's what's preventing me from becoming one because Lianne La Havas certainly didn't mind. Frankly, I think she could have played her set in the landfill that is Tommy Thompson Park and it'll still be just as romantic and charming as a candle-light dinner by the Seine on a misty night with a Mariachi band permeating the background... only the service might feel like it's provided by the Coldstream guards. The atmosphere was still a [...]

Austin - If I could deviate from the strict title that we must use for search engine purposes, I would call this Gary's Latin day/night party. The problem with calling it such is that I will sink to a new low and stop writing, since these two concerts were really meant to be seen/experienced. I'm not too proud, however, to beat my own records. So here it goes: Ozomatli and Bajofondo as painted by the camera. You won't believe the crowd I had to fight to get this [...]

Austin - There must be some balance in life, as well as in your SXSW. Translated, that means one might be disappointed by a band once in a while, but may also be completely surprised by another. This night, I had both. I had first heard from Lord Huron in 2011. Their single "Mighty" was a very bold take on the folk rock genre (which I've linked to below). Starting from a rainy noise, it was composed almost entirely of a chorus of just wails, guitar-highlights, non-sensical giggling, and melodic shouts, punctuated by vocal intrusions once in awhile. It's really [...]

Austin - Some times you just can't win. Paul already wrote a glowing review for Billy Bragg. And then he asked that I write one to juxtapose his, as if a chemical engineer should have no more problems expressing himself in the language of mathematics anymore than he would in a bastardized Germanic language. Billy himself would be glowing with shame at this inefficiency if he could cast his healthcare model onto Panic Manual's modus operandi, but given that I have textual diarrhea, I'm happy to oblige. All [...]
