Last year I started writing for a magazine called CALMzine , the publication of CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), a nonprofit charity that was founded with support from trustee (and of course, someone who looms very large in the story of Manchester's musical heritage) Tony Wilson in 2006. CALM's initial intention and continuing campaign has been to help fight the high suicide rate of men under the age of 35 in the UK. While the campaign, Web site, magazine and online community targets men in this age group, the support [...]

A member of the BBC Sound of 20122s club, Lianna La Havas is hotly tipped as one to watch by British media. I first heard of the 22-year-old London native through her buzz single "No Room For Doubt" , which I thought was pleasantly nice enough. However, I wasn't feeling the tracks on her EP as much. Even though she has a great soulful voice, her materials didn't sound terribly exciting. The Corinne Bailey Rae comparisons also did her no favors. Well, I would like to take that back. I shouldn't have [...]

In these enlightened days, it seems like complete and utter nonsense that healthcare has, for some, become something financially out of reach. There is nothing more heart-wrenching that to hear about a child who is very ill and can't get the treatment she needs because the treatment costs some astronomical amount. Billie Bainbridge is a 4-year old English girl. And she has a very rare type of brain tumour. The treatment options in the UK are limited for such a rare condition but the good news is that Billie has been accepted into a clinical trial [...]
London's Clock Opera is a difficult group to pin down with a genre. Their brand of swirling anthemic indie dance defies a more specific description. Frontman Guy Connelly joins Andy West (bass, guitar, synths), Che Albrighton (drums, samples) and Dan Armstrong (samples, synths, keyboards, backing vocals) to form the workings of the group. Clock Opera rose to fame with its release of several singles, notably "A piece of String," "Belongings," "Once and for All" and their most recent, "Lesson No. 7." For me though, the Clock Opera tracks that I've really fallen in love with are their remixes. [...]
CM: What time did you wake up today? Was it out of choice or necessity? JS: 10 o'clock Glasgow time! Necessity – Had a 6 hour drive to the Northern coast of Scotland ahead of us playing in Thurso (look it up on the map.. its 10miles south of John O'Groats) CM: Describe Jumping Ships [...]

Nearly 8 months after releasing her last single "Say Hey", Sunday Girl is finally back with the follow-up. The fashionable pop star's 4th single happens to be a cover of Sunscreem 's 1992 trance hit "Love U More" (well there's a Steps version, too, click at your own risk ). While I'm not previously familiar with the original, her version is quite ravey, and definitely her most radio-friendly yet. I don't mind a bit of chart-chasing action, as long as the album gets released soon! "Love U More" is out October 30. [...]
. . . 41st And Home - "Wilderness Eyes" [mp3] "Wilderness Eyes" is a song that from the first note I knew I was in love with. This is the kind of song I'm likely to hit repeat on and just let it play over and over. 41st and Home's sound is obviously Vancouverish. I [...]

This London duo are about as hard to pigeon hole as we imagine it is to physically squeeze an actual pigeon into an actual hole. As you know, The Recommender usually deals in cutting edge music, so you may be wondering why they're appearing on here, seeing as they've been floating around since 2009. That's understandable, but in all honesty they're one of those bands that feels like they've established a foothold on the underground music scene without actually releasing much original work to date. One search on the Hype Machine and you'll see a reasonably [...]
Here is Everything Everything with a performance of "Tin (The Manhole)" at this year's Mercury Prize Awards.
Everything Everything played the Electric Arena at EP in Stradbally on Sunday.
Tomorrow night, Tuesday the 6th of September in London, the winner of the 2011 Mercury Prize will be crowned. I've asked each of our writers to choose which album they think should win this year's honour, as well as which album they think was criminally absent from the 2011 shortlist. And without further adieu... Mary Chang , Editor (hometown/current location: Washington, DC, USA) Who should win: Everything Everything - 'Man Alive' (Geffen). To be honest, I was [...]
. Mother Falcon - "Fireflies" [mp3] Like an upbeat Quick Said The Bird, Mother Falcon are incredibly talented musicians who understand the importance of being part of a whole. Nothing escapes from the ether yet at the same time every note in this song is incredible. The vocal round-about does me in more than any [...]
The Sunday line-up has a nice balance of chilled out acts and some bands to keep your energy levels up. Pulp play the main stage as the retro headline act, Zola Jesus is a good alternative tho, on the Cosby Stage at the same time. As usual there is plenty to see, so here's our picks: Oh Land - Electric Arena @ 2.30pm There's something in the water in Scandinavia, producing a steady stream of talented female acts. Oh Land is a perfect example of this, [...]

Us music bloggers usually take ourselves too seriously, and the rush to be there first is a tiresome tyranny we impose on ourselves. I know all this, and even though I always tell people that for me, blogging is a hobby, nothing more, I still find myself succumbing to this ...

I think this might be a first for our MP3 of the Day feature on TGTF. This is something very special: Everything Everything is giving away the track 'Airstrike on Your Forehead', the demo that later became what we know as 'MY KZ UR BF'. Listen to it and download it below.
