In case you have not heard, Brooklyn's own Pterodactyl have released their third long player, Spills Out via Jagjaguwar . On this record, the band continues to hone their craft. The Pterodactyl sound started out as abrasive noisepunk (check out a couple early tracks in the bonus section below). Their sound has since evolved into something more psychedelic, something a bit more pop. They have toned down the feedback, focused more on harmony and three-part croon, and added Wurlitzers , ukeleles, and Kawasaki Dual Cool Keys (a discontinued toy keyboard) [...]
Jake and Jamin Orrall specialize in fuzzy West Coast rock that plays best in a party atmosphere (or on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2). There is a vintage feel to the brothers' guitar-and-drums lineup, forcing an emphasis on quality songwriting and stage presence; superfluous bells and whistles are not present to mask the occasional misstep. [...]
(photo by Robin Laananen) Venerable San Diego DIY/punk/thrash label Three One G (home to such greats in past and present as Arab On Radar, Black Dice, Get Hustle, Ground Unicorn Horn and way more) have taken to their Soundcloud page and posted a handful of super rad playlists for kids to stream, download and share. If there's anybody to thank for legitimizing the indie scene in New York City (and now beyond), it's probably Frenchkiss Records . Started as a way for Brooklyn's Les Savy Fav to release their own albums, the label has quickly become a touchstone for forward-thinking bands with a strong sense of self. No two Frenchkiss artists sound the same, but they're connected by fierce creativity and a knack for writing songs at once progressive and accessible. As Frenchkiss heads into its second decade of taste-making, the label's trifecta — Syd, Paul, and Phil [...]

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes...
Two members of the same band each give L.A. Record their favorite albums of the Aughties! Which albums will overlap? Which will cancel each other out? Is the inclusion of "Ex Models" a vicious personal swipe at someone? And will L.A. Record EVER run out of top ten lists of the Aughties? Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion...

In 2009 Pterodactyl unleashed Worldwild on us, an album that absolutely explodes right from the minute you hit play. It is a record meant to be played loud and full of art rock with a bit of energy and excitement behind it. This is not cross your arms and nod along rock, this is go ape shit as the band makes you deaf for the next half hour rock. Jesse from the band was kind enough to put together a couple of lists for us counting down the best of the decade [...]

APATZINGAN, Michoacan — In farm towns across the state of Michoacan, residents are used to seeing military patrols rumbling through their streets. But until late last month, they had never seen soldiers descending on City Hall. After surrounding the whitewashed building in Apatzingan's central square, masked troops armed with AK-47 rifles arrested the mayor, Genaro Guizar Valencia. Authorities accused Guizar — and more than two dozen other officials across the state — of working for La Familia Michoacán, an ascendant drug cartel guided by a messianic cult that promises to protect the poor while [...]

Words and interview by Derek Evers Video by Maia Stern and Hanly Banks Last week, Telepathe finally released their long-awaited, David Sitek -produced LP Dance Mother to the world, and we figured what better way to celebrate than a friendly game of bowling? Shot on the exact date of the physical U.S. release (April 14), we quickly came to realize that the competitive spirit burns brightly in this duo as the game soon became anything but friendly. Telepathe is [...]

Tucked away in a basement somewhere on the outskirts of Boston, there is a secret lair filled with motley recording equipment, and a neatly organized cache of guitars, synths and other flashing electronics. The stockpile of gadgetry is owned and operated by three young gentlemen who call themselves Pretty & Nice . http://www.myspace.com/prettya ndnice Post from: The Galley Boys Pretty & Nice :: Get Young
Islington Mill, Salford 16 May 2008 Atlas Sound Bradford Cox (he of Deerhunter) is a fragile looking creature, yet as soon as he introduces himself it's clear he's most comfortable in his own skin when he's behind a microphone and knob-twiddling his sequencer/looper. Despite the indulgent private jam overtones, this was a prodigious showcase of the ambient atmospherics and Beach Boys-esque melodies of his solo project, Atlas Sound. Reminiscent of Panda Bear's Person Pitch LP after a drenching of reverb, it was [...]
HEALTH Genre: Rock / Experimental From: Los Angeles, California United States HEALTH was six months old the first time they played for real people. Before that, there was more talk than music, mostly about art, food, sex, animals, records, drugs, politics and sleeping. After two more shows in Los Angeles, they self released a 7'' and went on tour. While they were traveling, people [...]

Oh well. I missed S-S-S-Spectres and EX MODELS on Saturday. At the ERMP show on Saturday, Little Mike Bones' set seemed wrong. It was simply not music for a sunny/beautiful day. I'm sorry, but I simply could not sit through Hundred Eyes' set. They just seemed totally out of place. This was not music for the middle of the day, but rather late late at night. (And what was up with the schmata on the head? hmmm?). I went off in search of beer and did not return to The [...]
