Amid the tragedies of the week, we looked to the pop culture tabloids for some lighthearted escapism and hope in avoidance of the 24-hour fear factory scare machines from the news media feed cycles. We heard will.i.am knocked off Mat Zo & Arty's Anjunabeats cut "Rebound" with "Let's Go", which of course had to rope in conflict magnet Chris Brown. And while King Krule's Archie Marshall may have canceled all shows for this month of April, he took the time to d...

Mixtape: Bay Area Artists, Remixing and Remixed (Podcast #304) All too frequently, remixes are just okay , but when they are great, they're really something special. A truly great remix can shed new light on the original artist's work and stand on its own as a unique creation. That's no easy feat, either, given the tension between staying true to an original song's components and a reworker's desire to create something new and personal. These days, it feels far too easy to get remix fatigue. Reworkings seem to pop up almost immediately after [...]

With the industry in full throttle and the Imposition on the road to SxSW, we hardly know where to begin. How about a weird Tim & Eric directed video for Beach House's "Wishes" starring Ray "Leland Palmer" Wise, or catch Animal Collective's videos from their Terminal 5 performances with the relaunch of Centipede Hz Radio, and as seen on TV; Andrew W.K. is now the official commercial spokesman for Playtex's new 'Fresh + Sexy' freshen-upper wipes for his...

Welcome to 2013. We are very happy to be here. We endured the endless Kanye-Kardashian pregnancy twitter feeds, saw Mark McGuire leave Emeralds to focus on solo endeavors, ignored Bieber-Gomez breakups, watched the RGIII endorsement-hype machine reach a maximum overload, and got bummed about our boy Frank Ocean who got busted for weed possession/suspended license/tinted windows; but at least we will get a new Youth Lagoon album this year called Wondrous Bughouse March 5 through Fat Possum. Make ...

Separately, Tim Cohen and Jon Bernson released two of my favorite albums this year. Cohen as the frontman of The Fresh & Onlys and Bernson as the mastermind behind Exrays . And so it should come as no surprise that I was excited to learn about their most recent collaboration (their second overall) under the name Window Twins . On Wish , Cohen and Bernson blend together live drums, programmed beats, spindly guitar, bright horns, and various layers of electronic sonics set against analog instrumentation to create a dark, texturally-rich, and slow-burning brand of psychedelica. [...]

September is overflowing with compelling live music choices - so many so, in fact, that a bunch of significant concerts didn't make the podcast. Of the picks that did make the cut, however, our top pick is our fifth annual Rock Make Street Festival [...]

Kainat tepemde akıl ermez oyunlar oynuyor. Buhar su oluyor. Su çamurları, pislikleri temizliyor, çimenleri yeşil ediyor, ağaçları ağaç. Ne işim var evde? Otur sen de. Sen de gitme evine. San Francisco based indie electro group Exray's released a new album courtesy of Howell’s Transmitter last month and are already hitting the remix circuit. Trust a Robot is heavy in electronic pop beats that are both gritty and up-beat. Its title is an ode to its futuristic narrative, and its music tells a story like a beautiful dystopian science fiction novel. Each track offers a new experimentation or exciting foray into a defining sound or lyric. A few twists surprise the listener from time to time, but always in a welcoming [...]

I'm recovering from a Fourth of July hangover so overly loud music just isn't doing it for me today. This new song "Yellow Light" from San Francisco based Exray's is hitting the spot this morning. It's a tune that falls into the chillwave genre with it's easy beats and relaxed feel throughout the mix. Almost reminds me of Gorillaz at times. A brand new album from Exray's, Trust a Robot, is currently streaming for free over on bandcamp . Download: Exray's - Yellow Light [MP3]
There exist many rock artists who have made the successful drummer-for-drum machine swap. German krautrockers Can used a human/machine combo on 19712s Tago Mago , the Young Marble Giants went exclusively mechanical on 19802s Colossal Youth, and, most surprisingly perhaps, Sly and the Family Stone’s use of the “funk box” on 19712s There’s a Riot Goin’ On was one of the first rock albums to prominently feature a drum machine. Today, San Francisco’s Exray’ s is making quality use of the charmingly cold machine on the lo-fi end of the rock spectrum. The duo’s sophomore LP, [...]

Shigeto's flawless release streak continues today with his remix of "Yellow Light" by Exrays. The Bay Area synth-pop outfit's jam has been reworked considerably by Shigeto, who incorporates loads of thick, fuzzy bass into the mix. He's also manipulated the vocals to the point where they drift in and out of the track like a calming breeze. It'd be cheap to call this relaxed, especially because it's got a considerable thump to it. But there's something mellow about how this comes together. Maybe you'll agree.
