Girls Aloud "Sexy! No No No..." - If this is the first Girls Aloud song you've ever heard, you need to know right away that it's not even the best, or even the most intense. While most mainstream and indie rock bands are busy mewling and meowing in this decade, Xenomania has been crafting loads of pumped-up pop songs for Girls Aloud and other UK pop acts that drastically exaggerate the dynamics of both rock and dance-pop to such extremes that it makes most everything else seem relatively flat and lifeless. Xenomania isn't just trying to do [...]
A few of our friends lately have been talking up Juan's Basement , a Daytrotter-esque destination for indie bands, only in Brooklyn. And in a basement. And with video. Juan's latest installment features the coarse-fibered lullabies of gothic-country troubadour Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter (with ex-Whiskeytown Paul Wandscher on guit!), whom we got excited about a few months back . She performed for the show a set including album standouts "LLL" and "The Air Is Thin," Juan's cinematographic touch giving the clips that dusty, instant-vintage feel -- a good fit for Jesse's spacey & western vibe. [...]

I had a very hard time narrowing it down to 10 this year so I am doing 20 in four installments. I'll save my thoughts on the whole year until the final installment. I appologize to techno fans in advance. Please note that compilations and rereleases of older material were not considered for this list but they will get their due. #20 Belong-October Language Out of all the great ambient drone releases this year(Tim Hecker, Growing, Etc...) this one remains my absolute favorite. Lo-Fi-Fnk @ Fontana's 11/3/2006 City / Adore / Wake Up / The End Lo-Fi-Fnk "City" - Lo-Fi-Fnk's fourth US show was in the basement venue of a bar called Fontana's, as part of the Brooklyn Vegan 's series of CMJ day shows. The group only played four songs, and unfortunately "What's On Your Mind?" and "Unighted" were not among them, but they were fun and adorable nonetheless. The three of them are in their [...]
Today would be the one year mark for this site's existence. Perusing the archives you can see a little bit of paradigm shifting in musical taste which is a good thing I guess. According to the site traffic and feed stats we actually have an audience and actual readership (which isn't that much but its still p cool). So thanks for making chinese restaurant in the forest* relevant. Special thanks to Squashed , Moka , Funtime OK , mp3blog.ch , Shay , boomawang , bbqchickenrobot [...]

The Howling Hex "Hammer and Bluebird" - Neil Hagerty achieves a focused yet thoroughly zoned-out Zen sort of rock on Nightclub Version of the Eternal, and by that I don't mean just on this song or a portion of the selections -- I'm talking about the entire seven track, 52 minute duration. The album, which is essentially a collection of lengthy grooves, zonked chants, and lateral jams, sounds as
