Monday nights aren't usually highly-anticipated in the Austin music scene, unless a touring band is making a stop in town. Last Monday, the 27th, The Parish hosted a stop on Stellastar's album release tour. The New York quartet just released their third album, Civilized , the first release in over 3 years. Expectations were high for this show and Stellastarr didn't disappoint. The same can't be said for the opening acts, but overall it was a very good Monday night in Austin. Post-punk pioneers Wire were oft recognized as a group in a strange nether region - one that was too artsy to be punk, too punk for the art kids. Wire was angular and minimal, with gorgeous melodies remaining subtle and rewarding. As such, it makes total sense to extract those under-the-surface pop structures, add dense layers of sound that the band sometimes hinted at, and reimagine this begrudgingly poppy gem as shoegazing, whose artists also tended to be begrudgingly poppy. Experimental Aircraft was formed in October 1997 in Austin, Texas. Two years after formation, the band produced and released their self-titled debut in 1999 on sleepy bunny records (a fictitious local label). In March of 2000 the album was picked up by California based Devil in the Woods Records and repressed with slightly new artwork. ExAir's sophomore effort was also recorded and produced by the band, released in October of 2002 on Rollerderby Records, run by Rachel Staggs from the band. Experimental Aircraft are yet another band from Austin that rocks. I've been making my way through a good amount of local music lately and it is a nice change of pace. If you don't stop and look around every once in a while you will miss out on a lot of stuff that is right in front of you. It's totally awesome that Austin attracts a plethora of the best touring acts on the planet, but it ain't like we're lacking in quality homegrown talent.
