I had the best of intentions to finish all of my 2008 lists before the new year, but it looks like I ran out of time. I'm much more worried about being thorough than being timely so it is ok. I decided to do something a little experimental this year with my best EP list. When I was comparing very short "full-length" albums to longer albums on my best LP list, I kept wanting to hold the time duration against the shorter album. Also, it seems the difference between EPs and LPs can be a bit arbitrary sometimes, so I decided to just draw a line completely based on album length to split up my best album lists. Its hard to recall the last time San Fransisco based Deerhoof had a bad record. They're newest one is slightly weirder than their previous releases but still possesses the likability that many indie-pseudo art rock rock bands try so hard to achieve. A couple other bay area bands have also pop-ed up on my radar: Experimental Dental School and KIT . Last week I drove up to Asheville, NC to catch Deerhoof at the Grey Eagle since they weren't coming to Atlanta. I left in prime time rush hour but was able to make it into the venue and right in front of the stage moments before the first band played. I'm still on holiday so this will be a quick one, actually I should be packing right now. I caught Experimental Dental School opening for Deerhoof in the 9:30 club on Sunday night. Hailing from Portland, Oregon they're a 2-piece (drums and guitar + vox) and they certainly seemed to be a good fit for the tour as live they reminded me a lot of the hoof with a few bluesy riffs thrown in for good measure. Experimental Dental School ( MySpace ) is one of the most exciting and stunning bands I've heard in a while. 2008 is going to be great , man. The Oakland, California trio is far from placeable; they defy classification, although a few things can be safely said about the organ-guitar-vocals group's aesthetic and sonic style. Imagine a more scatterbrained Deerhoof or sharper, higher contrast second-coming of Captain Beefheart.
