Double Dagger was energy incarnate, set on fire. The bass cranked the noise in unison with the drums, pulsing through the crowd, with the lead singer jumping and screaming, leaping and crawling. I decided to do something a little experimental this year with my best EP list. When I was comparing very short "full-length" albums to longer albums on my best LP list, I kept wanting to hold the time duration against the shorter album. Also, it seems the difference between EPs and LPs can be a bit arbitrary sometimes, so I decided to just draw a line completely based on album length to split up my best album lists. Its hard to recall the last time San Fransisco based Deerhoof had a bad record. They're newest one is slightly weirder than their previous releases but still possesses the likability that many indie-pseudo art rock rock bands try so hard to achieve. Last week I drove up to Asheville, NC to catch Deerhoof at the Grey Eagle since they weren't coming to Atlanta. I left in prime time rush hour but was able to make it into the venue and right in front of the stage moments before the first band played. Hailing from Portland, Oregon they're a 2-piece (drums and guitar + vox) and they certainly seemed to be a good fit for the tour as live they reminded me a lot of the hoof with a few bluesy riffs thrown in for good measure. Experimental Dental School ( MySpace ) is one of the most exciting and stunning bands I've heard in a while. 2008 is going to be great , man. The Oakland, California trio is far from placeable; they defy classification, although a few things can be safely said about the organ-guitar-vocals group's aesthetic and sonic style. Imagine a more scatterbrained Deerhoof or sharper, higher contrast second-coming of Captain Beefheart.
