STLS is a two-woman 'drumcore' band from Portland, Oregon. The band features sts (The Haggard, Cadallaca) and Lisa Schonberg (Explode Into Colors) and two drum sets. That's all. Just two girls and two drum sets! Awesome! sts and Lisa stand and face each other while banging out melodic and thunderous pop music made solely with drums. In exciting news: the ever-fabulous Bay-area trio, Grass Widow are now signed to Kill Rock Stars and their new album, Past Time, will be released on August 24th. First heard of Portland all-female no-wavers Explode into Colors on an 2009 sampler with this sax version of Paper. Percussive, minimalistic and extremely energetic, I was interested in hearing more but had to wait I chanced onto Quilts . No wonder these 3 ladies are signed to Kill Rock Stars , named an artist to watch by XLR8R and chosen as one of the top 10 bands of SXSW 2009 according to NME. Explode Into Colors . Is that a fantastic name or what? (Don't say 'what'.) It combines the raw unpredictable energy of an eruptive blast with the dynamism and vigor of a multihued existence. And as band name syntax goes, it cleverly capitalizes on the oft-abused, seldom-successful phraseology approach: it's a sentence , with a verb and a subject and just three words long.
