We've had a few of Watson's diverse tracks before . And he's back with a new genre - "shoegaze grime". Or so he says. This is more of his lovely downtempo, string-led techno, blended with some off kilter beats. A bit dnb, a bit Burial, very emotional. Never the expected from Marshall. This is more quality beatage. And a new EP nearly finished to look forward to. ____________________________ www.marshallwatson.net www.soundcloud.com/marshall_wa tson www.facebook.com/Marshall0Wats on

Any of you out there still in love with the Exploding Hearts ? Well, you should be, but if you're looking for something new to help stoke the old power-pop flame, you need to check out this new jam from The Barreracudas . The band has a new album, Nocturnal Missions , coming out in stores on October 25th via Douchemaster Records . It's a pretty straightforward rocker, but in the best way possible. I mean, come on, who doesn't love sing-a-long rockers? And, [...]
With the Rapture being compared to Gang of Four, the Strokes hyped as the return to post-'77 CBGB's New York, and the ubiquitous Interpol/Joy Division comparison (while ignoring the Chameleons' influence), by 2003 the music world was deep into what many (myself included) considered to be a post punk revival. With the spotlight clearly on New York City, not much attention was given when Portland, OR's the Exploding Hearts released what would be their one and only album, Guitar Romantic , in April of that year. Often described as a punk band, the easiest way [...]

I can't tell you how much I've always enjoyed the projects of King Louie Bankston. He played with The Exploding Hearts , one of my all time favorite groups, and he also had a one off project called The Bad Times with Jay Reatard , not to mention a slew of other projects that came up in between. He's recently signed on with Douchemaster Records, and he'll be putting out an album with Missing Monuments , titled Painted White . Everything in [...]

... the only words I want on my tombstone, apart from my name, are: "Teenage Dreams, So Hard To Beat." What more do you need? — John Peel One of my all-time favorite styles of music is power pop: a 1960s-inspired rock genre typically comprised of driving drum beats, sharp vocal melodies, and straightforward minimalist arrangements. It's pop music that goes straight for the kill shot—the immediate hook and connection. What I find particularly engaging is the small shaded region where punk rock and power pop overlap into a sharp and deadly force. Not [...]

Who likes power pop? I do. I do. Seriously, when I heard The Biters , I just went straight to iTunes and grabbed their EP. I mean, its part Exploding Hearts , part Gentleman Jesse , and all parts just awesome. There's nothing arty or dancy, or even intricate for that matter, it's just straight ahead rock n' roll, like the good old days. It fuels you with energy, and it'll make your smile large. You gid? What is it they say...the older you get, the more you get compelled to rock out at random moments. Is it like the twitch of a phantom limb? Some nerve that suddenly got nostalgic? Funny, because I didn't spend too much time acting the garage/punk rocker in my youth, and yet sometimes I feel a very real nostalgia for music that didn't quite belong to me. Let me turn up my hearing aid now. The Exploding Hearts - Making Teenage Faces
Spotify. Bonus Eventus are a very young band, a point they drove home by reminding me they weren't even in high school yet when this decade started! That said they still put together a pretty sweet list of mixed media for you all to enjoy. It includes TV shows, DVD's, songs, and albums and pretty much sums up what you would hope the youth of today would have taken away from this decade. 1. The Strokes Is This It? (album, 2001): This album has been a staple in all of our [...]

Our fourth episode will, not only, have some great new tracks up (from Beach House, Brilliant Colors, and Total Slacker) but we are also having a contest. Just use these easy to follow steps and we will send you a unique cassette tape of today's show sans commentary, of course. We are also including a "one-of-a-kind" hand designed sleeve for the cassette. Cool, right? Well, whether you think so or not just email us at weeklytapedecktix@gmail.com with the artist name and title of the very last song in our rotation. First person to do so is the winner! Honestly, it's [...]

I'm forever indebted to Dirtnap Records , as I hold them responsible for bringing me the sweet rocking tunes of The Exploding Hearts . Sure, it's just one album from those guys, but it's one hell of an album. For those of you into that sort of music, you can grab the free sample from the label HERE . Download: The Exploding Hearts - Youre Black and Blue [MP3]

1.) Josh Ritter - "Thin Blue Flame" (from The Animal Years ) Nearly 10 minutes in length, Ritter's masterpiece is a "Stairway to Heaven"-caliber achievement with Jimmy Page's guitar licks exchanged for 700-plus words of poetry. Traversing a war-torn world and a host of Shakespearean, Biblical, and science-oriented images, Ritter finds solace in a ray of hope: "So I stopped looking for royal cities in the air / Only a full house gonna have a prayer." [...]

Spending the younger days of my life in an incredibly small town, it's a wonder that I could be exposed to even a tenth of the albums included on this list. Let's just say that the music I listened to then… well, let's just not say. It wasn't until a year or two before I graduated high school in '01 that I began to familiarize myself with music outside of the radio world. Before I drag on and get entirely too nostalgic… it just seems fitting that our first list of an entire decade happens to be one where I [...]

Terry Six is the sole surviving member of Portland, Oregon power-pop group the Exploding Hearts—whose brief career came to an end when three of the band's members died in a car wreck. Six, the Hearts' guitarist, never gave up making music. And he hasn't let go of that sweet power-pop sound either. In 2006, The Nice Boys—with Six fronting the group—released their self-titled debut. The album's best track, "Johnny Guitar," is as influenced by the Hearts' catalogue as it by Cheap Trick's. The Nice [...]
