Austin quartet White Denim will release D, their fifth studio album on May 24. That same night, they'll play San Diego's Casbah, and it'll be worth your while to check it out. The experimental indie band has been compared to the Minutemen and Randy Newman (yes, both), and is known for infusing anything from punk [...] Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.
You may not like or enjoy it very much, but you can't help but be impressed by it.

The Chicago Odense Ensemble are readying the release of their self-titled album and while there isn't a solid date set , I do know it will be out via Adluna . As for the group, it consists of Rob Mazurek (Exploding Star Orchestra, Chicago Underground Duo, Isotope217), Dan Bitney (Tortoise), Jeff Parker (Tortoise), Matt Lux (Isotope 217), Brian Keigher (DJ Warp), Jonas Munk (Causa Sui) and Jakob Skott (Causa Sui). While I am not wholly familiar with all these artists, I do know that I enjoy Tortoise a lot and can pretty much assume a delicious, [...]

Male is Ben Mjolsness and Jonathan Krohn (do not confuse them with MEN ). Together, they arranged "a series of recording sessions to document their take on improvisation." The sessions featured contributions from members of Exploding Star Orchestra , Pan American , and Joan of Arc . The resulting album, All Are Welcome is coming out on Other Electricities in Februray and is filled with postrock/experimental/jazzy goodness. Listen: "Wrangler For Higher" (box.net mp3) Other Electricities is here . Other Electricities eMusic page is [...]

My review of Bill Dixon with Exploding Star Orchestra ran today at PopMatters . I've been following the work of Rob Mazurek for some time now, and was a huge fan of both his 2007 releases, the Exploding Star Orchestra debut We Are All From Somewhere Else and the Chicago Underground Trio's Chronicle . On this record, he brings back the spacey Chicago-based Exploding Star Orchestra to serve as fodder for the legendary trumpeter Bill Dixon. [...]
And, thus, 2007 comes to a close. This was a fantastic year for music, with several of the best albums of the decade so far seeing their release. 2007 blows last year out of the water as far as I'm concerned, and it has made for many hours of happy listening. With this final feature, Under The Rotunda will be on break for two weeks until the new year rolls in. Well, a little bit after the new year rolls in -- I'll be back January 7th, to be exact. Merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, enjoy [...]
Thanks to all who listened! That's the last of me on the radio until the new year (I won't be back until late January), so thanks to everyone who's been tuning in. Things will only be getting better next semester, with a new weekly time slot (no more of this bi-weekly foolishness). Also on the plate for "Under The Rotunda Live" next semester: we've got some tasty interviews lined up. It's only going to get better from here, gang. The Polyphonic Spree - Running Away (from The Fragile Army ) Blonde Redhead - [...]

The Exploding Star Orchestra is a newly discovered formation in the Chicago Underground galaxy. Cornettist Rob Mazurek appears to be stargazer-in-chief, and various Tortoises are of course involved (John McEntire, John Hernden, Jeff Parker). In total, 14 musicians, excluding the electric eels, are involved in this nebulous concept album about, as far as I can work out, the transformation of a stingray into a star. Birds are involved in the story, as are those eels. I'm not sure that knowing any of this helps, but it gave me a laugh typing it. [...]

Exploding Star Orchestra - Cosmic Tomes for Sleep Walking Lovers: Part 2 (Thrill Jockey 2007) Exploding Star Orchestra – We Are All From Somewhere Else / Thrill Jockey In 2005 the amazing Chicago-based cornetist Rob Mazurek (Chicago Underground, Sao Paulo Underground) was asked by The Chicago Cultural Center and the Jazz Institute to put together a group of local musicians to truly capture the bubbling avant-garde jazz scene of the windy city. Mazurek, being the prolific musician and project-concocter he is, really outdid himself by bringing [...]
