My love for Montreal's Expwy is deep (as QBiM readers no doubt know), and the band's main man Matt LeGroulx is getting deep, too. But only as deep as you're willing to get. Let me explain. Legroulx is trying out a brave new venture called EXP Hit Factory . The idea is simple: You write a poem. About your dog, about your ex-best friend, about existentialist crises, whatever. You send him the poem, and for $10, LeGroulx will write the music it will be set to and record it for you. [...]
Welcome back to the second installment of the songs that rocked my world in 2012. A small re-cap for those of you who missed out on yesterday's post: without any fanfare, ranking or listing, I'm giving you the 75 songs, split into five collections of 15 songs each, that soundtracked the year for me. There will be a post a day this week from Monday to Friday (You can click back to Monday's post to get the first part) , and you can collection them all to get a pretty awesome compilation that I think is a good [...]

by Tiana Feng Last month, experimentalists Expwy let loose a double EP called Expwy In the Sky . Why a double EP and not just an "album" you may ask. Well the reasoning is that both parts can be played simulataneously. Tracks 1-6 going along well with 7-12. It results in this kind of intentional sounding cacophony that can only be described if you listen for yourself. Expwy in the sky by Expwy Bandcamp

It's only been a few of months since Little Hand Fighter was featured here, but Matt LeGroulx of Expwy says he's been "trying to keep up with this Ty Segall guy and he is prolific this year," so his answer has been to release a double concept EP about neighbourhoods destroyed by highways called Expwy in the Sky. Tracks 1-6 are meant to be played simultaneously with tracks 7-12, and though I haven't managed to do so yet, I've managed to be entranced by this confident, [...]

There's this FFWD Weekly article from Calgary that some colleagues have been talking about this past week. It basically chastises Canadians for reveling in musical mediocrity, in part blaming Can-Con quotas and regulations, and the media for celebrating a known entity-for arguments sake, let's say a band like Metric-and not actively looking out for a more experimental, lesser known artist like Expwy . Criticism is also leveled at the artists themselves for churning out copy-cat, sound-alike albums from the comfort and safety of the middle of the road. The co-authors also do some [...]

by teepoo Expwy 's EP (titled EP I think), has been sitting in my iTunes for a while. Maybe it was waiting for a sunny day like this one to be heard. That's what the 6 tracks seem to embody. A bright, lo-fi, feel-good sunny sound. It's so hard to believe that this is music created by a one man band of Matt LeGroulx. EP by Expwy
It's somehow taken me a few months to post on Montreal based Expwy's newest EP, EP. That being said...I'm on it now. The music fits way better with this torrid summer we seem... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

Deep and frozen mother nude Foppish gallant and scarecrow thin I spent a bit of time the last couple weeks delving in to the three LP's released by Montreal's Expwy since last June (that's only 10 months folks), and have come out with the knowledge that Matt LeGroulx can consistently write some gritty, dusty, tunes with nods to the classic guitar sounds of the 60's and 70's. It's stripped down, straightforward, old-fashioned pop/rock with some quirkiness of today's DIY attitude to give it an [...]

EXPWY released another free album on Bandcamp titled Bag of Waters . Like the previous it harnesses fuzzy lofi and raw sound. Bag of Waters is a leap from the previous Dance Maul and Dance Maul and not just in their long ass song titles. There's something about it that sounds simple yet eclectic. The album brings nostalgia to days of jamming in garages and just making music. EXPWY- Glinting Buckles Harnessed the Moonlight

Some great lower-fi, semi-psychedelic pop coming out of Montreal's Expwy . (via PRTLS )
