Look, I'm not here to tell you how to vote tomorrow. I have my reasons. You have your reasons. And, I'm not about to get into an argument over whose platform would be better for you, your family, and a big city like Cleveland. This is a music website where we can argue about music in a friendly manner . I have no interest in stoking flamethrowers and trolls. The important thing is that you participate in this thing called democracy. Go out [...]

Photo: Brian Ferry Then, the field of vision assumes a peculiar structure. In the center there is the favored object, fixed by our gaze; its form seems clear, perfectly defined in all its details. Around the object, as far as the limits of the field of vision, there is a zone we do not look at, but which, nevertheless, we see with an indirect, vague, inattentive vision. If it is not something to which we are accustomed, we cannot say what it is, exactly, that we [...]

Extra Golden Providence, RI September 24, 2009 The saying “If there’s a will, there’s a way” fits Extra Golden to a tee. The group’s certainly had to prove its resilience in its five years of existence: they haven’t let visa troubles, political unrest or the untimely death of a founding member get in the way of a joyous international collaboration between American and Kenyan musicians. Formed almost by happenstance in 2004 when musicians Ian Eagleson, Alex Minoff and Otieno Jagwasi began playing [...]

Yeah Yeah Yeahs in the rain Unlike Bumbershoot 2008, which was a gorgeous 70-degrees-and-sparsely-cloudy weekend, Bumbershoot 2009 was a much more Seattlesque weekend. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs kicked off our Sunday afternoon, but between the ugly weather and a lackluster crowd, the show never really took off. I have to admit that I'm only a fan of four or five of the band's "bigger" songs, but even so, the only section of the crowd that was really amped up for the set were the die-hard fans front and center. We made a [...]

Just a quick update before heading out the door for the last day of Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival in Seattle, and I thought I'd leave a selection of photos from the weekend thus far. Also, stay tuned for a weekend recap very soon. Natalie Portman's Shaved Head Massey Ferguson Dyno Jamz Dyno Jamz- Horns Section [...]

I can think of much worse ways to spend an August weekend than in the heart of one of my favorite cities (San Francisco), seeing an eclectic lineup of bands both headliner-huge and quirky-small. Last year's inaugural edition of the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival boasted a solid roster of national and local musicians, but was plagued by a few logistical snafus that ranged from the mildly annoying ( no, you can't go that way anymore, you have to walk all the way around ) to the borderline panic-attack inducing [...]
Black Joe Lewis is a Texas soul shouter who would have been at home on Sue in 1966 but finds himself instead on Lost Horizon with his band the Honeybears. He’s opened for Little Richard but his favorite rock ‘n’ roll band is Rocket From The Tombs and he loved Star Trek right up to the point J.J. Abrams got hold of it. This interview by Chris Ziegler.

I entered the Outside Lands Festival grounds a bit peeved. See when you try to find a spot at the Lands End stage (Main Stage), people have already claimed seven or more spots with a God damn blanket and their huge lawn chairs (which I thought were banned). So here I am walking on people's blankets and they're giving me these dirty looks like I just pooed in their soup. Hey man, you decided to call property on six square feet of lawn and you expect me to tip-toe around your shit? I don't [...]
With so many bands (over 200 at last count) ready to diverge on San Francisco for the second annual Outside Lands Festival this weekend, we thought it'd be helpful to provide some playlists so you know what to look forward to. Yesterday we gave you a playlist for Friday's bands and, as promised, here are samples of all bands playing on Saturday. Come back tomorrow for our final playlist installment. MP3s: Dave Matthews Band - "What Would You Say" Black Eyed Peas - "Rock that Body" [...]

Outside Lands week in San Francisco is off and rolling. Daily lineups and schedules have been set. You can start prepping your comfortable walking shoes and figuring out the best way to navigate Muni over the course of the weekend (let's hope more buses have been added this year, although you can always pony up some more dough for a shuttle pass ). Whether or not you'll be making the trek to Golden Gate Park this weekend for the music, the food, and the beauty, you can also check out the official [...]

Over here in the West, everybody loves what middle class adults and liberal newspaper review columnists call 'world music'. And nowadays, there's a strong bond with contemporary youth, which is the right atmosphere for collaborations like THE VERY BEST to crop up. I remember a while back hearing Esau Mwamwaya singing over some popular tracks, then hearing he was hooking up with production team Radioclit . They later went big on the blog scene as [...]
