As I opt to periodically do - when I have no other viable or unviable ideas - it's time to pull up an old Billboard magazine Hot 100 chart and note the songs that debuted that week. I nicked the concept from Chris at 702s Music Mayhem who uses the format with far greater attention to detail as he works his way through the '70s. The first few years of the '80s was when pop radio provided much of the music for me and Casey Kasem's [...]
Wow. What an EP from True Tiger. This is a release that just consumes your soul, body, and mind as you eagerly listen, waiting for every bass note smash and every snare kick crash. I'm already three times through the album and I cannot decide which is the best; they're all so good. Only thing I know is, these track will be getting a lot of play time from you, me, and your favorite DJ because every single one is certified crowd killer. If you're living over in the UK and you've been lucky enough to catch one [...]

If you ask me, Newton Faulkner suffered at the hands of his producer. Sure, his songs might not be all that great, but he was a powerful live performer with charm and talent aplenty; on record, however, he merely comes across as Mr. Bland from Bland City. I mention Faulkner here to highlight the delicate and mystical alchemy that goes into capturing a great live performer 'on tape' and how such a process can easily miss its mark. My first exposure to Emily And The Woods - the nom de guerre of singer/songwriter Emily Wood - was [...]

Vibe magazine chops it up with KRS-One as he breaks down his entire catalogue. Very interesting read, as KRS speaks on what happened whilst creating some of the best classics of Hip-Hop, starting with his Boogie Down Productions days. KRS-One on "Criminal Minded": "Me and Scott La Rock (DJ and co-founder of Boogie Down Productions ) started B Boy Records, which was a small little record company, with some other guys— Ray Wilson , Jack Allen and Bill Kamarra . That's where we put out 'South Bronx.' Before all this, [...]

An article by Scott Creney on Collapse Board the other day gave a thought provoking rant on music criticism and music journalism, its fundamental point being that much music criticism has lost its way. "You don't need someone to tell you what this music sounds like. You don't need someone to tell you where it comes from. And you damn sure don't need someone to tell you whether or not it's any good," Creney argues – in the fast moving world of today we can click on a button, press play and use our own intelligence to decide [...]

London-based Emily and The Woods is preparing to release their Eye to Eye EP (May 4). The sweet, serenading group consists of Emily Woods and her brother and father. Their first self-titled EP was released in February 2010. The newest EP features backing vocals & brass from Marcus Hamblett (Willkommen Collective), Roy Dodds (Fairground Attraction, Eddi Reader) on drums and Ted Dwane (Mumford & Sons) on double bass. Below, "I Can't" is a vulnerable song released in memory of her friend who died and can be downloaded as an mp3 in exchange for your email address here [...]
Check out Dustin Cavazos, fledgling hip-hop artist from Oak Cliff, Texas who dropped his debut album I Think In The Shower I Dream On My Bike last spring. Combining hip-hop with an indie flare, Cavazos' sound and production is a breath of fresh air. His lyrics are incredibly identifiable and possess an organic quality to them, departing from the mainstream in both style and content. Keep an eye out for Cavazos as he gains exposure with the anticipated release of his second album, Be.Leave.Me sometime next month! -Tiffany Kang

"Eye to Eye" is one of eight tracks featured on Leatherette EP : A self-titled release of psychedelic rap beats and exercises in chill-the-hell-out electronics. There's a lot of sound in this track, but it all plays very faintly against the finely chopped lead vocal. Harp, guitar, a horn, and maybe even vibes pop up over and over as the beat carries the samples in a very orderly fashion. Dig on the track below, and look for this new EP via Hotep-or is it Ho Tep? [...]

Last month, Metal Blade continued on with the recent series of Fates Warning reissues and released the band's 1991 CD Parallels as a three-disc set. I'm starting to feel really old now as this disc is now nineteen years old and the last time (that I can remember) Fates Warning played NYC was 2001 at L'Amour. The set contains an eight-track live show which was recorded on the Parallels tour at the Hollywood Bowl on January 23, 1992 along with six demos. The demos cover the majority of the Parallels [...]
