Towards the end of April, Belfast's Champion Sound will release the debut EP from Ryan Vail . It's been preceded by Fade , a wonderfully hushed electronic journey through stark instrumentation and downbeat vocals. Loving this minimal track "Fade" from Derry, Northern Ireland artist Ryan Vail . The name actually comprises both Ryan and Katie Cosgrove, who together merge analogue electronic beats with euphoric vocals and flute instrumentals. Fade, the 13th studio album from Yo La Tengo, is the culmination of 25 years of sonic experimentation that includes free jazz, indie pop, garage rock, surf pop, folk and Velvet Underground inspired drone-rock yet remains characteristically their own. The first album with producer John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea and Cake, Jim O'Rourke) hones arrangements that are more layered than usual. Guitar noise shines; "Is That Enough" and "Before We Run" even have strings. Not strictly speaking a remix; a cover version. This is a cover of the lauded Mazzy Star track Fade Into You . Everyone seems to lose reason over Hope Sandoval but the original leaves me cold. This version is therefore a welcome change of direction. Barcelona's Buffetlibre replaces the slide guitar with some lovely piano and Hope gets done over by the deepness of Micah P Hinson's vocal. A welcome change of direction for the track - as welcome as that male cover of Madge's Beautiful Stranger from a few years back. [...]
