Here we are folks: I've finally gotten off my festively-enlarged ass (seriously, between Mom's holiday treats and Dad's beer I gained about 8 pounds) and finished my top albums of 2008. As per usual, these are all Canadian releases, as that's where the ground is closest to my ears. Here they are roughly arranged in descending order (very roughly): The Olympic Symphonium - More in Sorrow Than in Anger (Forward Music Group) I was a huge supporter of The Olympic Symphonium 's 2007 debut, [...]

Devil (e) Durge been hanging around my periphery for a while now. I'll listen to it, tell myself I need to write about it, and then it will slip away, only to have the process repeat itself a few weeks later. It's an odd album that's not easily categorizable. There are so many disparate elements at work here that seem at odds with each other, but when assembled together, create something that actually works, and works well. The album is the second full length from Fall Horsie , and was put released through Halifax label [...]

It's quite sad, actually, but lately I find I'm setting the bar fairly low for myself and then if I accomplish what little I've set out to do, I feel like a success. My expectations are so meager at this point that nearly anything can be seen as rising above them. For instance, if I manage to make it to the gym, clean up the kitchen, maybe do some laundry and then go to work, I feel like I've had a pretty good day. I'm afraid I've turned into a bit of a slacker. [...]

Fall Horsie's Devil(e)durge is one stunning record! The 10 lyrical songs play like a bizarre fantasy/odyssey. The piano, guitar, strings, and percussion are theatrical sounding (think along the lines of Franz Schubert's Der Erlkönig). There is a sort of spookiness/darkness in Devil(e)durge , but it is mostly contained by the transcendent arrangements and gentle vocals. Justin Karas (the mastermind behind Fall Horsie) has composed a record that is absolutely stimulating and delightful to the ears! Cloudy Eyes Over Arid Face [wicked-cool song] The Devil's Performance [...]

myspace Halifax has been pumping out some terrific folk music lately, so naturally when I got the new record from Fall Horsie , I assumed I'd be digesting another collection of warbled goodness. Originally a clever moniker for the solo work of Justin Karas , Fall Horsie has blossomed from the vessel of a folksy song writer into full fledged, orchestral tracks full of brass, beautiful percussion, moody strings and poignant piano. The songs are crafted with meticulous precision, but somehow the songs still feel alive. But even with all of the [...]
I've got a few posts on the docket at the moment, but seeing as today was Victoria Day (a holiday celebrated in Canada since 1854-thanks Wikipedia!) I let my brain have most of the day off. In fact, the afternoon was basically spent walking around Riverdale (the east-Toronto neighbourhood where I live). My landlord was doing construction anyway, so I had to get out while the getting was good. Somehow I had actually forgotten that this was a popular weekend for letting off fireworks. Of course, I was quickly reminded when the sun went down, [...]
