NYCTaper Top 25 Concert Moments of 2011: MP3 Downloads and Streaming Songs

NYCTaper Top 25 Concert Moments of 2011: MP3 Downloads and Streaming Songs Thurston Moore at Williamsburg Waterfront. Photo by anonymous Live music in 2011 saw several newer bands consolidate their hold on greatness, while well-established acts from the 90s brought out crowds for reunion shows and, sadly, farewells. For those of us at the site, we were inspired by crowds of people who were, in a lot of cases, younger than we were checking out bands like Archers of Loaf live for the first time, or finally gaining appreciation for the work of artists like Cass McCombs and Bill Callahan. At the same time, favorite new or [...]

Show of the Week: Robert Randolph & the Family Band at the New Daisy, 10/28

Show of the Week: Robert Randolph & the Family Band at the New Daisy, 10/28 So, the SOTW is a little different this week. Less indie, more badass musicians. Less Pitchfork, more undeniable feel-good music. Less bull butter, more real-deal cats leaving it all on the stage. I present to you, o' readers, Robert Randolph & the Family Band at The New Daisy this Friday night, the 28th. The band is out in support of their new record, Live In Concert , that came out last month. Mr. Randolph needs no introduction (although I just gave [...]

I could tell you all about my uneventful yet totally lovely morning OR I could just post a few of the tunes that soundtracked it. All unashamedly nicked from Captain Obvious , and all unashamedly wonderful. Marie (Jack Nitzsche Cover) - Family Band I was deep in study when this came on, but it pulled me right out Love The Way You Walk Away - Blitzen Trapper Just the right amount of [...]

Stereogum Monthly Mix: September 2011

Save a bit of humidity, it is an undeniably autumnal day in NYC. It's gray, it is wet, and it feels positively gauche to jam to anything that would feel right at a beach. So to help to fill the void created by expunging "sunny music" from your daily playlist, and to show solidarity with nature, here are 13 tracks representing some of the finest tracks the internet's offered lately that also feel right for the season. This means darkened post-punk (The Soft Moon) and shadowy production hits (Purity Ring, ASAP Rocky), a run of chilly arpeggio chime (newcomers Dive, [...]

Family Band – "Again"

Family Band – "Again" Grizzly Bear's Dan Rossen produces this MP3 from Family Band, recorded for the Shaking Through series of one-day song-recording documentaries. (Previously: Twin Sister , Reading Rainbow .) In the clip below you see primary Family members (in both the "music" and "they're-married" senses) Kim Krans and Jonny Ollsin get a little tense and confused while arranging "Again" with lapsteel player Scott Hirsch and Rossen. They found their way (like a family), and we're left with a fine example of the band's core strengths - a "heavy mellow" or ("goth prom") vibe that pits striking and clear [...]

Shaking Through : Family Band

Shaking Through Vol2 Ep8: Family Band
Shaking Through : Family Band Daniel Rossen from Grizzly Bear curated and produced the latest Weathervane Music- + WXPN-sponsored studio session with the slow-melting "goth prog" Family Band from the mountains of upstate New York. This is one of my favorite episodes to date as it really shows how challenging the recording and creative process in the studio can be, but also how rewarding. Watch them as they work through the material together. Listen to and download the beautiful, haunting new track they produced "Again" right here: [...]

This Month's Shaking Through Session: Family Band's "Again"

This Month's Shaking Through Session: Family Band's "Again" This month's episode of Shaking Through —the online audio and video collaboration between Weathervane Music and WXPN—features a song by Family Band titled "Again." The Brooklyn-based act is composed of husband-wife duo Kim Krans and Jonny Ollsin as well as family friend Scott Hirsch; the episode was curated and produced by Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear . More from the folks at Shaking Through: With one EP and one full length under their belts, Family Band has traditionally recorded within the confines of their hand-built cabin in the [...]

Family Band

Family Band At the core of Brooklyn-based Family Band, now apparently a 4-piece (I'm deducing this from press photos), is the natural chemistry of husband-wife duo Kim Krans and Jonny Ollsin. Krans provides the haunting vocals while Ollsin lends dark guitar textures. My introduction to the band was their stunning cover of Jack Nitzche's "Marie." Their rendition is barebones elegance built around Krans's hypnotic lull and accentuated by lush slide guitar and swirling feedback. The track is available for free download on the band's bandcamp page, along with a few select tracks off of band's album Miller Path . [...]

The Happy Jawbone Family Band - Book of Fire

The Happy Jawbone Family Band - Book of Fire The Happy Jawbone Family Band - Book of Fire I have such a soft spot in my heart for quirky folk and psych music that makes me feel like I'm sitting in a dusty living room in a house with plenty of character watching a rag-tag bunch of your best budz [or the weird kids you went to High School with that you find out later are way cooler then the "cool kids"] making sweet sweaty music. That to me is the best kind of music. You can pick up the prolific songwriters' [...]

Jeff Tweedy's Family Band, The Raccoonists, Has Its First Single

The Raccoonists - Own It

STRANGERS FAMILY BAND, BUFFALO KILLERS, WAR DRUM @ PAPPY & HARRIET'S

STRANGERS FAMILY BAND, BUFFALO KILLERS, WAR DRUM @ PAPPY & HARRIET'S The half-undressed woman in my hotel room was an unexpected surprise for me—and I assume it would have been to her too. Luckily, I didn't just open the door and saunter in like the clerk told me to on the phone, and instead peered through the windows to see why the hell the lights were on in the room I had booked, and … hey, that's not Dale Evans! I know the Pioneertown Hotel goes out of its way to provide great amenities for rock journalists, but this was ridiculous. Feeling like a major creepazoid, I [...]

Family Band's Upstate Forest Party

The debut of the Strand Of Oaks band performing with Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear, Family Band and Phosphorescent in a cabin in the Catskills

The debut of the Strand Of Oaks band performing with Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear, Family Band and Phosphorescent in a cabin in the Catskills John Vettese On a breezy hilltop in the Catskill Mountains this weekend, one of The Key's favorite Philly artists unveiled the next step in its ongoing evolution. Strand of Oaks is no longer solely Timothy Showalter. It's now a three-piece, rounded out by Joe Lazas on guitar and Deven Craige on bass. Both were recruited from recently-retired electropop / psych outfit Golden Ages, and they brought a loose, lush sensibility to the Oaks live show, occasionally adding ambiance that formerly came from one of Showalter's samplers, more often doubling up what the man [...]

Family Band: July 23, 2011 Backyard Brunch Sessions - FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Family Band: July 23, 2011 Backyard Brunch Sessions - FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs [Photos by acidjack] Family Band are a salve to a nerve-frayed city where everybody climbs their steps two at a time. Indeed, the Brooklyn back yard where the latest Backyard Brunch Sessions was held could as well have been miles from the city; in the presence of Family Band, we were transfixed, and transported. The components of the band's sound are vocalist/guitarist Kim Krans, whose dusky, haunting vocals give the songs their emotional core; her husband, guitarist/pedal bassist Jonny Ollsin, and Scott Hirsch, on pedal steel. If you noticed that [...]
