Dear Frontier Psychiatrist, I have been told that indie rock reinforces low mood. Is this true? And, if so, what should I listen to for inspiration? Indie-pression Dear Indie, Whether it be ice cream, alcohol, or anti-depressants, the man is always telling you that things designed to make you feel good are actually bad for you. Indie music is no exception. In fairness, there is plenty of indie music that might turn a melancholy man downright lachrymose. For example, you'd be forgiven for wanting to skip the circus [...]

In celebration of SPIN Magazine's 25 th Anniversary, they're throwing a week-long party in NYC featuring different bands each night. The schedule is pretty stout, featuring The Smashing Pumpkins , The Flaming Lips , The Black Keys , The National , Fang Island , Suckers , and many more. If you live in NYC, checking out the performances during SPIN 25 presented by ZYNC from American Express is certainly worth it. If you're like me and regretably not living in NYC (yet), you can [...]

Again, you don't have to be in New York City to watch these 5 shows. [...]

Much has been made of the firework soundtrack that opens (and finishes) Fang Island’s eponymous album. The pyrotechnics might serve up an obvious theme for reviewers, but there’s no avoiding the whooshes, aahhhs, woos and overarching sense of euphoria that fills these tracks. Fang Island choreograph their tunes with the spectacular builds and skin tingling rushes that come with such displays. However, they don’t wait until the end of the night to give us the biggest and most extravagant explosions choosing instead to litter them throughout. Musically they’re an intriguing hybrid of sounds, some of which up are [...]

The Pool Parties are organised by promoters JellyNYC and interestingly used to take place at an empty, abandoned pool in McCarren Park in Williamsbug, hence the name "Pool Party". After word of mouth spread, the events have since moved to East River State Park on the Williamsburg Waterfront. This is the 5th year of this concert series and they take place each summer. This was the first one of 2010 and featured Fang Island , Why? , and Xiu Xiu teaming up with Deerhoof to play Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures [...]

Phil Harder I was going to skip posting today entirely but a few choice bits came up on the radar that merited a quick mention - most notably, the announcement of Bettie Serveert's Autumn North American tour that had been promised since their latest album - the surprisingly rowdy Pharmacy Of Love - was released back in march. Amongst those dates is a September 28 appearance in Toronto at the Drake Underground, the Dutch rockers' first visit since a barn-burner of a set at [...]

Fang Island | JellyNYC's Pool Parties | July 11, 2010 Along with Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu , Why? , and Pictureplane , Fang Island performed at JellyNYC's first Pool Party of 2010. However, now that it's halfway through the week, we're almost done looking back to last week's show (a few final photos are below), and we start looking forward to this coming weekend. This Sunday, Jelly will bring Murder City Devils , Obits [...]
With stunning performances from Xiu Xiu and Deerhoof (as "Deer Division", playing the epic Unknown Pleasures front-to-back and then leaving the stage promptly), Why?, arena-ready Fang Island and Pictureplane (who appeared with sequencer, laptop and a guy in a sandwich suit and a girl who looked kinda close to Lady Gaga in a fat suit), [...]

Frank Yang I've previously bemoaned the dearth of festivals in my area this Summer, but on Thursday night at Toronto's Molson Amphitheatre, if you squinted just right, it certainly looked like a festival. Sure, it was only four bands deep but it certainly had many of the necessary bases covered - buzzy young up-and-coming act? Check ( Fang Island ). Hometown representation? Check ( Tokyo Police Club ). Critically acclaimed, indie cred-toting vets? Check ( Spoon ). Mind-bending, world-class headliner? Check and check ( The Flaming Lips ). [...]

Words and photography by Loren Wohl East River State Park Joy Division covered Chuck Schumer, what up?

Perfect weather, tons of rad kids and a massively major lineup set the stage for the summer's first Pool Party on the Williamsburg Waterfront. While the warm weather season began with queried "will they or won't they" whispers circulating, the season's festivities were announced a few days prior to the initial shindig. First up, was the collection of Pictureplane , Why? , [...]
