Occasionally, a band puts out a debut album with so much of themselves in it, that it seems impossible to to top, or even match, when the sophomore album rolls around. You see bands fall short all the time. In their second acts, bands - especially bands with energetic uplifting music - have a tendency to spread their wings, show off their chops and serious up. It's the dreaded, "we're going in a different direction" move. [Photo by Mike Garten] Think about MGMT, the Strokes, Clap [...]
The final week before Outside Lands, and we have a whole lot on our docket. We've got no less than 8 bona fide rock legends coming to town, as well as 3 of SpinningPlatters' all time favorite acts. Consider this your warm up for Golden Gate Park. Thursday, August 2nd Tears For Fears, Carina Round [...]

True fans of music spend countless hours searching for that next great song, album or artist, whether it be online or in a local record shop. The beautiful thing about music in today’s age is that technology has created an infinite supply of great music that is available to us at the click of a mouse. How perfect is that? We can discover a brand new artist on the opposite side of the globe in seconds without a radio or a music television channel. It only makes sense that a website so dedicated to this gorgeous universe of music would [...]

The Mynabirds / photo by Brittney Bollay Summer continues to brighten Seattle spirits, and there's something to keep just about anyone entertained this week. Starting on Wednesday, the Junkyard Dogs and Mountain Sprout play at the Tractor, while Maceo Parker begins the first of two nights at the lovely Triple Door. On Thursday night, College, Anoraak, and Electric Youth are at Chop Suey, Ozomatli and The Torn ACLs are at Showbox at the Market, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band starts the first of four nights at [...]

If Fang Island didnʼt snag you on their self-titled debut then by christ theyʼre gonna have a good go here. Step right up folks, because this Brooklyn/Providence three-piece are offering a straight up, sometimes sideways, slice of proper, sweet, heart on sleeve, riff-laden pop and rock. Kindergarten creeps in first with plinky-plonk piano, ebow harmony guitars and fragile vocals. It sounds like a stripped down anthem and itʼs really quite lovely. The guitar riffage kicks in thereafter and we find ourselves in more familiar Fang Island territory. Sisterly and Seek [...]
There are not a lot of singles that really stand out this week as they have in previous weeks this year so far. While there is growing chatter that 2012 has been lackluster, and some even say the same goes for 2011, it's pretty difficult to match the amount of awesome release after release that [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

I can’t think of another album that makes you want to hug complete strangers as you walk down the street on your daily commute. This is not some metaphorical device to open up this review, this actually happened. And, I must add, it was pissing with rain. Of course, I didn’t hug them. That would be both dangerous and a little silly. On first listen Fang Island’s latest album wasn’t the immediate fix that the last was. On second listen, the above happened, and the shit-eating grin it impressed on my face was enough to make [...]

Fang Island - Major By Joseph Rowan Like all right-thinking people whose ears appreciate things that are good Fang Island 's self-titled debut album was my favourite album of 2010 and it ranks among my most-listened to albums from the past 5 years. So, as you might imagine, there were somewhat high expectations riding on the follow-up. I could pretend there was some doubt about whether Major manages to live up to its awesomely rocking predecessor but I'm not going to [...]
This week is particularly special, and I'll tell you why. One of our favorite albums this year is out today! In addition to the ridiculous amount of great music out this week (perhaps the best week yet this summer), that stunning album we're excited about comes from The Blakes , titled Art of Losses . The album itself moves from The Dandy Warhols' to Modest Mouse and David Bowie-like vocals. The album is inescapable, offering something for every rock genre all the way down to my favorite track (surely to be on our year end lists) titled "Sea [...]
Rhode Island power-rock trio Fang Island burst through a brick wall in spring 2010 with their self-titled debut LP , a collection of life-affirming anthems that welcomed fearless fits of melodrama. While the lads' sophomore LP, Major , seek to recreate that very magic, the band's ascension is stymied at a height just below its true potential. Perhaps the greatest misstep comes in the first half of the LP, "Make Me". The band’s proggy side routinely manifests as a slow build, taking smaller, less impactful sounds and slowly building up until it explodes like a [...]

We envy you. When you go into your favorite record store today or hop online to your trusted music merchant, you are about to buy your favorite album of the year. Or one of them, anyway... there's a lot of competition this fall! Purity Ring , though, the Halifax/Montreal-based duo, have finally released their full-length debut, which our Music Director, Don Yates, calls "a remarkable album of beat-driven electro-pop, blending elements of atmospheric dream-pop with modern hip hop and R&B on lush, sharply executed songs combining sparkling and warped synths, cavernous hip hop beats, sugary melodies, ethereal, occasionally auto-tuned [...]

A few of my favorite new releases this week, including the latest from Passion Pit , the debut from Purity Ring , and a brand new EP from one my big time favorites — The Antlers . As always, be sure to check out Largehearted Boy for the rest of this week's new releases. The Antlers// Undersea [...]
Fang Island mold an album's worth of catchy tunes from an unlikely blend of retro kitsch, music nerd obfuscation and hard rocking machismo. Brooklyn via Rhode Island trio Fang Island make math-infused riff rock for indie kids whose '80s metal t-shirts aren't quite as ironic as one might think. The band describes their own sound as "everyone high-fiving everyone" and their goal as musicians to "make music for people who like music". On their sophomore full length, Major, they succeed admirably in accomplishing just that. It doesn't hurt that each one of the band's members is a veritable...
Here are a few MP3s of songs from some of the better albums released this week: Eternal Summers – “Millions” from Correct Behavior Fang Island – “Sisterly” and “Asunder” from Major Mozella – “Another You” from The Brian Holland Sessions...
The Rhode Island based trio grows up. Sargent House, 2012 7.0 / 10.0 If there's one thing about the music industry that gets on my nerves, it's when bands feel like their sound needs to "evolve" or "progress". Fang Island seem to have fallen victim to this cliché and the result [...]
Score one for the indie kids this week! It's a strong showing for independent labels this week. Starting things off, we've got Juiceboxxx 's I Don't Want to Go Into the Darkness (pictured), which is so indie it's on Juiceboxxx's own Thunder Zone label. Also look out for Eternal Summers 's Correct Behavior on Kanine, Family Band 's Grace and Lies on No Quarter, and Foxygen 's Take the Kids Off Broadway on Jagjaguwar. Also, Eric Copeland (one half of Black Dice ) has a [...]

It's time to check out a bunch of the tracks I have not posted recently. These are just a few of the songs that would get their own individual posts here on GIMME TINNITUS if I only had the time.
